Well I don't think that this talk about gussets are necessary because as a welder, it's not even possible for you to weld two 2" angle iron on a H channel without one. The space for you to weld is just 1½" and as such can't contain two 2" channel. So you will be needing at least 5" "plate" welded on the H channel before you can weld the two angle iron.

But that's how I work sha I don't know about others

Good evening everyone. Hope you all had a great day. I have been asked how I intend to reduce the noise which iron doors are notoriously known for and here is my solution.

So after making the doors and installing on the frame. I will use a special hinges that will allow me to pull the doors from the frame at anytime I desire. I will cut dunlop foam according to the shape of the frame and align it across the whole frame. When you close the door, instead of the iron door to hit the iron frame, it will jam on the foam which will cushion the sound and reduce the noise by at least 70%. Now when you hang it on wall and fill up the frame with cement, it will nearly eliminate the noise down to non-existent level. The said hinges is noiseless and doesn't make creaky sound too.

Attached is the picture of the door which I worked on. The owner no follow for people who likes fancy stuff but he's one person that has eyes for perfect finishing

Nice you finally decided to divulge your method. Still not a fan of metal doors used as interior doors. Having said that we will be needing at least 5 metal doors for exterior doors (single) and two doubles. You will get priority when the time comes as the project is in your backyard. Cheers

I love that welding machine.

Thanks.

I’m more of a woodworker and just learning welding. I wish I had paid more attention in the USA to MIG and TIG welding.

This is still very valid too.

That plate you’re talking about is the gusset.

To have a very good understanding of how gussets are used in steel structures, check the popular Onitsha Bridge.

As a structural Engineer, any type of joint used in design is good and well calculated for.. Using gusset plate or welding or bolt and nut are all good ways to connect structural members.. the design is what matters... Some are designed to be movable or rigid.. it all depends on the Engineers design... so, saying using gusset plate is the best form of joining members isn't a good structural advice because gusset plate are still welded to members...

There are connections you can't do without using a gusset plate. For example, building a truss with angles required the use of gusset plate. Brazing a columns, beams and other structural members with angles also required the use of gusset plate.

Bro let me pick your brain a little on a question i asked earlier, how much do you think it would cost to plaster an 8 bedroom duplex, or better still how many bags of cement would you consider adequate, trips of sand and the likes. its 8 bedrooms, 2 sitting rooms, 2 kitchens, a store and laundry.

Two to three bags of cement for one room 12 x12
two Bricklayers and one service for one room 12 x12

Budget - N2m

I spent N2.3m on almost same building configuration (7 rooms, 2 kitchen, 3 lounge, 10 toilets, gatehouse, gym, fence and other external works)

Make plans for:

300+ bags of cement.
Sand (Big Truck) = 6 - 8 trips
If small trucks, budget 14 trips.
Labour (local labour rate apply)

That's a lot bro, thanks. I think taking it two rooms at a time will help.

Smiles.

The owner is buying the cement and the masons are using it.

Plastering get level. When it comes to finishes, I don’t involve myself in too much stuffs. I encourage owners to use what they can afford.

Someone like me used 26 bags of cement to cast 2 gate pillars and ground beam for my sliding gate. Someone else can use 8 bags to achieve same.

It’s not BS. It’s what you want.

So if 2 - 3 bags of cement can plaster a room with 3.1m headroom. Go ahead and use it.

Just make yourself comfortable!

All house na house.

I don’t mean to be insultive but I have no answer to your request.

I just gave him idea of what I spent on my project. You can do the calculations or discard it as another “Nigerian BS.”

No na grin

At your height and the imposed load, your stanchions, tie beams, top beams and bracings will still provide the much needed support. So there’s no cause for alarm.

The post is just to enlighten us that there’s always a better way.

I used to work on Telecommunication Masts so I understand a lot about how steel towers are/should be built.

Going forward, we should always try to pay attention to most of the decommissioned mast/steel tower and collapsed steel structures to see how they’re built and their support braces. Most failures aren’t all substandard materials.

Of course you are right to distinguish the difference between the two. I never stop learning and thank you for the details explanations. At least we know what to require in future. Thanks.

Unfortunately, not so much difference. It’s just the additional cost of gusset plate which is almost nothing.

It's a design need.

What we use here will never pass in an earthquake zone or where lateral movement is expected. These things do collapse though. On oof my personal failings i snot coming up with a better idea and resorting to the normal elevated water stand. A buried tank with a solar powered pump is what I hope to do on my future personal plan.

A typical naija Gate has 2 supporting pillars and you have a gate (like Pic 1 below).

But learned professionals on this platform will tell you that the gate design in pic 2 below is better and that was exactly how my gate (pic 3) was installed.

Both gate design/installation will work, I as a person just want something better.

Are there earthquake in the location of this design?

So you used 28 bags of cement for two pillars and sliding gate
The pillars I guess are not standard pillars
Ok let us work out this 28 bags
You used 9 bags for one pillars
Please don't talk to me like a fool if you are not going to explain
will need over 18 bags of cement for the two for two pillars
10 bags of cement for the sliding gate
I guess it's Lagos
No granite or sand was used
It was all cement

It is like plumber telling us we need 50 pipe
to Run double line to a soak away
the land is 50 X 100
A pipe is 8 ft
From one end of the land to the other is 100ft so you need 12.5 pipes for each line
But building don't start from one end of the land to the other
so the two line will be 25 pipe end to end
How can you justify 50 pipe or 35 pipes
