if the car is burning so much fuel, you will smell it in the exhaust...if it is leaking it from the fuel tank or fuel lines, you will smell it...If it is as bad as you say, then there may be enough fuel to stop the engine by fooding but fuel injections dont really allow that.IF YOU CHECK THE ENGINE OIL FOR SMELL OF GASOLINE......you are in nigeria,so if you have not noticed the high smell of fuel from your exhaust or around your car when parked,,PLEASE CONSIDER THAT IF YOU DID NOT KEEP YOUR FUEL TANK CAP LOCKED OR EVEN IF LOCKED,DID SOME ONE NEAR THE PLACES YOU PARK,COME AND STEAL GAS FROM YOUR CAR EVERY DAY,WHO HAS KEY TO YOUR FUEL TANKhuhhuhhuhhuh

webplay: I think i understand what the poster means. I drive a 2003 corolla, US spec, and lately, i've been noticing same.
The car was initially very good on fuel comsumption, but recently, i have noticed a very marked increase in its fuel consumption.
Some mechanic said its the fuel injector, and he sprayed fuel injector cleaner or something like that, and though it seemed to abate for a while, the fuel consumption is still high.

And I am sure i am not confused because of the increase in fuel price over the period of usage (2010 till now).
When was the last time you changed your air cleaner? Something as small as that could be your problem.

I am experiencing the same thing now on my car (2005 Corolla sport). Very high fuel consumption and my Engine oil reduces as well.

Please what could cause a reduction on the engine oil especially whenever i travel i little long distance. (Please note that this car is barely one year plus on Nigerian road)

I seriously need help. Can anybody recommend a corolla specialist mech within Ikeja or Sango Ota?

If you run your car in town and you agreed that it consume fuel i will disagree with you. Your first step should be to fill your tank on saturday evening, on sunday morning take this vehicle and cover 50 kilometres and fill the tank again. This is when you will know your real fuel consumption. If you buy more than 7 litres, i believe the vehicle is bad. Please do this first, before you conclude that this vehicle consume fuel.
7 liters is still too much for 50km...my thinking though
