This is a face saving measure by ECOWAS. They posed no threat to the Malians.

Actually they do. ECOWAS sanctions, when fully implemented, would crush a country like Mali. And Malians know this too, that's why they reached a truce.

Ecowas sanctions had no input in the transition process because Nigeria who is supposed to adhere to Ecowas protocol has shut it's own borders.

Malians wanted a change in government and they welcomed wholeheartedly the military coup
