Having lost to Algeria we need redemption with Tunisia game

Tunisia thump Sudan 3-0

The Carthage Eagles caught the eye with an impressive victory in the day’s early kick-off, while The Atlas Lions and the Stallions were also winners
Tunisia downed Sudan 3-0 in an eye-catching performance during Friday’s friendly encounters, while Morocco beat Senegal 3-1 in one of the day's late kick-offs.

Elsewhere, The Gambia saw off Congo-Brazzaville and Burkina Faso thumped the Democratic Republic of Congo 3-0.

The Teranga Lions, finalists at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, may have been without Sadio Mane following his positive coronavirus test, but their supporters will have been disappointed with how they folded against an excellent Atlas Lions side.

Achraf Hakimi set up Amallah for the opener after 10 minutes, before the goalscorer then set up Youssef En-Nesyri for the North Africans' second in the 71st minute.

Youssef El-Arabi added a third for Morocco four minutes from time, beofre Ismaila Sarr pulled one back for Senegal two minutes later.

Hakimi was the Lions' star performer, thriving on the right side of Vahid Halilhodzic's 3-4-3 formation, operating in the role he's set to play for new club Internazionale this season.

Tunisia's Carthage Eagles, who meet Nigeria in another friendly bout next week, tore into a 3-0 lead in the first half against North-East Africans with a sensational 45 minutes of attacking football.

Saif-Eddine Khaoui opened the scoring in the 17th minute after an assist from Wahbi Khazri, before Ali Maaloul doubled Tunisia’s advantage eight minutes later with a diving header from close range following a superb cross from the right flank from the Saint-Etienne playmaker again.

10 minutes later, debutant Anis Ben Slimane added a third to cap off a rampant half, although Tunisia lost their momentum after the break, and were unable to add to their advantage at the Olympique Hamadi Agrebi in Rades.

Sudan, ranked 128th in the world, will be delighted to have kept their opponents at bay in the second half, but were thoroughly outclassed during the opening 45 minutes.

The North Africans meet Nigeria in Klagenfurt, Austria on October 12, while Sudan are set to meet Togo.

Also on Friday, Burkina Faso thumped the Democratic Republic of Congo following goals from Bertrand Traore, Bryan Dabo and Issoufou Dayo.

Traore’s header following an assist from Abdul Razack Traore opened the scoring in the 14th minute, before Dabo struck from the spot in the 68th minute.

Dayo added a third four minutes from time to round off a resounding win for the West Africans, who were one of the biggest names to miss out on the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

In the Algarve, Portugal, Assan Ceesay’s second-half goal was enough for The Gambia, who have enjoyed significant improvement over recent years, to defeat Congo-Brazzaville 1-0.

Also on Friday, Kenya's Harambee Stars shocked Zambia in a 2-1 win at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday in a friendly meeting.

Cliff Nyakeya's strike and an own goal by Tandi Mwape handed Francis Kimanzi’s side the victory while a late goal by Emmanuel Chabula denied the East Africans a home clean sheet.

Chabula should have added a second for Chipolopolo when the ball appeared to have definitely crossed the line, although the referees refused to give the goal to Zambia.

On Thursday, South Africa and Namibia played out a 1-1 draw, while the Ivory Coast held Belgium to the same scoreline after Franck Kessie’s effort cancelled out Michy Batshuayi’s opener.

Rohr’s Tunisian Assistant, Trabelsi: ‘We’ll Beat Tunisia Again; I Want 2nd W/Cup With Nigeria’

Gernot Rohr’s Tunisian assistant, Nabil Trabelsi, believes that Super Eagles have the quality to defeat his country, Tunisia, again after the Carthage Eagles fell 1-0 to the Nigerians in the Third/Fourth Place match of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Completesports.com reports.

The Super Eagles and the Carthage Eagles will clash in an international friendly match at the Jacques Lemans Arena in Sankt Veit an der Glan on Tuesday.

Trabelsi who is Rohr’s assistant as a video analyst, spoke to the Tunisian sports news website, Ettachkila.com, ahead of the match. Aside briefly previewing the upcoming friendly match, Trabelsi who is an UEFA A licenced coach, with other qualifications, spoke glowingly about his experience so far working with the Super Eagles under Rohr.

“First of all, I think that the context will be completely different from our last confrontation in Egypt,” Trabelsi told Ettachkila.com of the Nigeria Vs Tunisia Tuesday’s friendly, recalling the Super Eagles’ 1-0 win against the same opponent at at AFCON 2019.

“It’s a friendly game and both teams will be looking to develop a good game with technical and fast football. We know Tunisia very well and we will do everything to win.”(smiles)

As a member of Rohr’s backroom staff, Trabelsi played his role as Nigeria qualified and featured in both the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and the 2019 AFCON. He wants to achieve better feats with the Super Eagles working with Rohr before looking to take charge as a head coach somewhere else.

“I admit that this is something that makes me think, but in any case, it will not be for now,” he said when asked about aspiring to become a head coach.

Trabelsi (right) on Super Eagles duty

“I want to play a second World Cup with Nigeria. Our goal remains to go to Qatar in 2022, and why not, repeat the exploits of 2014 or 1998 (Second Round feats in 1994 ,1998 and 2014). I will have the opportunity thereafter, to take a step forward and take charge of a good team as a head coach.”

On how he met and started his work relationship with Rohr, Trabelsi recalls it all started even before the German arrived to replace Sunday Oliseh as Super Eagles head coach in August 2016.

“It was during the CAN 2013 in South Africa. I was on a scouting mission for my club [Freiburg] and that’s where I got to know Gernot,” said Trabelsi who assisted George Leekens in 2014 when the Belgian was the head coach of Carthage Eagles.

“The understanding went well between us because we share a lot of points in common: we have a common friend in the person Volcker Finke and both worked at Etoile (Gernot Rohr had coached the flagship club of the Sahel between 2008 and 2009). It is only natural that I began in 2015 my collaboration with him as assistant coach of the Burkina Faso team (for a year) before he resigned.”

He added: “Yes, it was in 2016 that my adventure in Nigeria began. I am lucky to work with great players from the African continent in a country that breathes football.

“My arrival in Nigeria, I owe it a lot to Gernot Rohr, who believed in me and who imposed me in his staff. I am very proud of my journey, we managed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia where we played extraordinary matches against world stars like Lionel Messi or Luka Modric (Nigeria was eliminated on the wire in first round by Argentina). One year later, we play CAN 2019 in Egypt where we finish on the podium by beating Tunisia in the small final. It is a very enriching experience for me to coach the Super Eagles , both personally and professionally.”

Super Eagles head coach, Rohr, pays the salaries of Trabelsi, and his two other assistants – Jean Luc Royer (fitness coach) and Tunde Adelakun (chief scout).

Rohr To Make Changes For Super Eagles Vs Tunisia

Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr is expected to make a number of changes in his starting line-up for Tuesday’s friendly against Tunisia following his side’s poor showing against Algeria, reports Completesports.com.

The West Africans fell 1-0 to the African champions last Friday at the Worthersee Stadium, Klangefurt.

The Super Eagles were completely outplayed by the Algerians with Ramy Bensebaini netting the winner in the sixth minute.

Left-back Zaidu Sanusi, Tyronne Ebuehi, Leon Balogun, Maduka Okoye and Alex Iwobi all put up impressive displays for the Super Eagles, while majority of their teammates struggled all through.

Genk forward Paul Onuachu had a disappointing game, while the likes of Semi Ajayi, Samuel Chukwueze, William Troost-Ekong and Samuel Kalu were not at their best.

Rohr is likely to drop Onuachu for either Kelechi Iheanacho and Cyriel Dessers against the Carthage Eagles.

Talented winger Chidera Ejuke also likely get the chance to make his debut against the former African champions.

FIVE Interesting Things To Know About Nigeria – Tunisia Encounters

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in an international friendly game in Austria on Tuesday.

It is the second of two friendly games lined up for the Eagles by the NFF as part of preparations for next month’s 2021 AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone.

The Eagles will hope to bounce back from their defeat to Algeria on Friday when they face Tunisia.

And ahead of Tuesday’s game, Completesports.com takes a look at FIVE Interesting things to know about Nigeria – Tunisia Encounters…..

1. – Nigeria won first ever meeting against Tunisia in 1961

The first ever clash between Nigeria and Tunisia was in 1961 in the first-leg second round qualifiers for the 1962 AFCON.

The Nigerian team triumphed 2-1 in their first encounter with the North Africans.

However, Tunisia qualified for the 1962 AFCON after Nigeria walked off in the reverse fixture away.

Nigeria abandoned the return-leg encounter after Tunisia equalized to bring the score to 2-2. With Tunisia’s equaliser, on aggregate Nigeria was ahead 4-3.

Tunisia was thus awarded a 2–0 win, and qualified for the competition by an aggregate score of 3–2.

2). – Tunisia ended Nigeria’s dream of qualifying for the 1978 FIFA World Cup

Nigeria, Tunisia and Egypt made it to the final round of the 1978 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The three countries were grouped together in a home and away format with Africa’s sole ticket to the World Cup at stake.

Nigeria kicked off the qualifiers on a positive note as they held Tunisia to a 0-0 draw away.

In their second game Nigeria thrashed Egypt 4-0 in Lagos before losing 3-1 to the Pharaohs in the return-leg.

Despite the defeat to Egypt qualification to the World Cup was still in Nigeria’s hands as they just needed to beat Tunisia in Lagos to qualify.

Unfortunately, an own goal by Godwin Odiye in the 61st minute ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for a first World Cup.

After the end of the qualifiers, Tunisia topped the group on five points, Egypt finished second on four points while Nigeria had three points.

3) – This is the third time both countries will meet in a friendly game

Tuesday’s game between Nigeria and Tunisia will be the third time both countries will take on each other in a friendly game.

Their first clash in a friendly game was in 1984 in Tunis which saw the North Africans thrash Nigeria 5-0.

In 1992, both countries met again in Tunis for a second friendly game which ended 1-1.

4 )-The last time Tunisia beat Nigeria was in 2004

The last time Nigeria ended on the losing side to Tunisia was at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by the North African country.

After 120 minutes of football which saw both countries tied at 1-1, Tunisia went on to win 5-3 on penalties.

Since then, both teams have met five times with Nigeria winning two times and drawing three.

Their last encounter was in the third placed game at the 2019 AFCON which was decided by an Odion Ighalo goal.

5 ) – Tunisia walked off in the 1978 AFCON 3rd place match vs Nigeria

Both countries met at the AFCON for the first time in the third place match, at the 1978 edition hosted and won by Ghana.

With the score at 1-1, the match was abandoned after Tunisia walked off in the 42nd minute to protest the officiating.

Nigeria were awarded a 2-0 win, and Tunisia were banned from the next tournament which was hosted by Nigeria in 1980.

Friendly: Rohr Retains Ajayi, Okoye Chukwueze; Akpoguma, Musa Also Start Vs Tunisia

Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has retained Maduka Okoye, Semi Ajayi, Samuel Chukwueze and Alex Iwobi in his starting line-up for tonight’s friendly against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia, reports Completesports.com.

Okoye, who plays for Dutch club Sparta Rotterdam was in goal in last Friday’s 1-0 defeat to African champions Algeria.

Hoffenheim of Germany defender Kevin Akpoguma will occupy right-back position. He’s picked ahead of Tyronne Ebuehi who put up a fine performance against Algeria.

Zaidu Sanusi will look to impress once again in his left-back role, while Kenneth Omeruo will pair Leon Balogun in central defence.

Rohr against all expectations has decided to stick with Ajayi for the defensive- midfield position.

The West Bromwich Albion star struggled in the role against Algeria.

Ajayi will be supported in midfield by Everton’s Alex Iwobi.

Moses Simon will come in for the injured Samuel Kalu on the left-wing, while Samuel Chukwueze will play from the right-wing.

Captain of the team Ahmed Musa will lead the attack, while Kelechi Iheanacho will operate behind him.
