Human life is top priority, even a criminal has a right to life. And the constitution guarantees the criminal the right to a fair hearing. In other words the only thing to do is to apprehend the looters by any lawful means. You can't kill them because the punishment for criminals isn't the death penalty. Besides I believe preventing crime is in jurisdiction of the police and not the army.

This is how I see it.

Well, if a nice patriotic speech, starched khaki plus my large size & gun didn't convince them otherwise. I will just let them do as they wish. No need to risk the lives of the loyal gentlemen beside me

Are we all forgetting that there are crowd control and dispersal devices like teargas, tasers, etc?

That won't work on angry & hungry large crowds. It will end up creating a stampede & easily get you overwhelmed.

I wasnt even referring to the Army specifically. By the way, as Bifrost said, shouldnt the management of civil unrest fall within the jurisdiction of the police? I thought the role of Army is to solely defend the integrity of our territorial borders. Truly, in this part of the world, the Army is overstretched. Everything, the Army must be involved. Weldone to our Army personnel.

I dont think so, sir.

I am sure you are aware that there is a Riot Police squad dedicated to dispersing crowds during protests and riots. Their main gear/weapons are helmet, shield, baton, tear-gas/pepper spray and sometimes stun-guns.

If you have been tear-gased before, you will understand that your first and impulsive reaction would be to move away from the source of the spray and possibly get water to quell our hurting eyes, nostrils and throats. Protesters who are still determined to go on with looting will be prevented and beaten with the shields and batons of the police.

I hope you get the point now

That is why I said it will create a stampede, those affected will get confused and try to run away. While those in the back will keep pushing them forward. You don't tear gassed a tightly packed large crowd.
Direct frontal confrontation is ill-advised, unless you have the numbers, then kettling might be possible. BUT it's not like we have the equipment nor proper town planning to effect such tactics

First, tear-gas is not localized. It immediately diffuses from areas of high concentration to those of low concentration.

Secondly, tear-gas shells can be shot as projectiles from riot guns into the midst of densely packed protesters, increasing the rate of dispersals.

Youtube is replete with videos of Nigerian riot police in action. Consider watching them. We do have the equipments. What i may say we are lacking in is the trained personnel, promptness and rapid response to situations that call for it
