The Consumer Protection Council, CPC, Abia State Chapter has warned Cement dealers not increase price of cement during and after the #ENDSARS Protest.

The Agency said anybody that is apprehended selling cement above 2,500 naira which is the official price in Abia State will face the full wrath of the law.

A statement made available to IGBERE TV, signed by Sir Nnabugwu Chidi, Chairman of CPC also said that the commission is making it known to the general public that hoarding of products to influence the price is a crime and against the laws of the FEDERAL COMPETITION AND CONSUMER PROTECTION COUNCIL (FCCPC) and such act will attract sealing of the shops, stores or warehouses and other Court action too.

The statement reads,

"In accordance with the good governance of DR.OKEZIE IKPEAZU (PhD), the consumer protection council has frowned on the report that cement dealers in Abia State hicked the price of cement during and after the #ENDSARS PROTEST."

"The commission in further inquiry with major cement companies was made to know that cement did not add any price from the companies."

"During investigations, the commission found out that middle men (DEALER'S/ DISTRIBUTORS) was behind the unbearable hick of the price of cement from N2,550 Naira to N4,500 Naira."

"The consumer protection council is making it known to the general public that cement is to be sold at it's normal price and anybody caught selling cement above N2,550 Naira from Monday 9/11/2020 will not only get his shop, store or warehouse sealed, but will also face the Court of law with immediate effect."

"Also, the commission is making it known to the general public that hoarding of products to influence the price is a crime and against the laws of the FEDERAL COMPETITION AND CONSUMER PROTECTION COUNCIL (FCCPC)
and such act will attract sealing of the shops, stores or warehouses and other Court action too."

"The Chairman of the consumer protection council in his statement advised the good citizens of Abia State to remain calm in the trial period and keep faith with the government of DR.OKEZIE IKPEAZU."

So would you accept government setting the prices you charge for designing your beautiful logos? Especially if they tell you to charge 50% of what you usually charge per work.?

What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander

The same poor people that demand reduction in the prices of goods will also demand reduction in the prices of services.

ALSO, people who manufacture the goods rely on people who provide services. Government controlling prices might make it difficult for them to make enough profit and attract invesstment to earn enough money which can be used to pay services providers .

Like you.

Be careful what you wish for.

#2500 is too high for a bag of cement.

A bag should cost less than 1000naira.

While we were importing, we know how much we did buy it. Now that we produce and export, see the price.

Does Dangote want to tell us that he sells Cement at the high price he sells to Nigerians the cement exported out of Nigeria?
Cos it baffles me how he competes with cement producers outside Nigeria if he sells his exports so high like he does in Nigeria

Perhaps he is using our own money in Nigeria to subsidize the cements he sells outside Nigeria
Nigerians pay the highest amount than anywhere else in the world, for a bag of cement. The average cost of cement worldwide, is about $3 for 50kg bag. Even with inflated exchange, that is less than ₦1500 per bag. Countries that don't manufacturer cement don't buy it above this price.
Nigeria produces it. But Dangote ensured that importation is banned, and he has a near monopoly on cement manufacture and sale.
Next, he is targeting tomato paste. Then he will move on to the ban of noodles, pasta, and other commodities.
FG is his partner in strangulating the country

For those of you blaming dangote, is he the only company producing cement in Nigeria? Why can't others reduce their price also?

In Abia?I blame Obasanjo that played us into the hand of Dangote, he promised cement wouldn't be sold more than 600 naira then but the price never go down beyond #1400 then, when he ban the importation of cement which suppose to good for our economy but it actually didn't help us in anywhere
Same way Buhari banned importation of rice and we are all suffering it now.

Lol please what was the exchange rate when we were importing compare to now, let us be real with ourself any country that keep importing is spelling doom for itself. You think the Chinese are stupid giving you loans yet they supply the manpower as well as the coaches, but we pay back in cold cash. Continue singing Dangote this,Dangote that when you should be singing to President Buhari and Prof Osinbanjo ears to look inward and focus on import substitution... Sadly we go one step forward nine step backward... Just imagine how much billion dollars loan is going on those train coaches that can be fabricated in Anambra, but as usual we like quick fix.
Please put the blame at the door step of policy makers, money that should be saved and use for internal human capital development is always quickly wasted. The Dangote Refinery should averagely have a break even period of seven to eight years was suppose to reduce foreign exchange pressures but with all this accumulated loan from the Chinese by the Nigeria government what do you think will happen. Henry J Kaiser was a photographer when he started out but was commissioned to build Ships during the World War by the U.S government,we also see how the same U. S government spent on Howard Hughes but the only time the are comfortable to give Alhaji contract is when they want to collect tax .

I don't know the cost of production for cement but to me , the selling price shouldn't be more than #880 per bag for what we produce here and still export in large quantities.
Most times extra cost is due to expenses in transportation. Roads are bad. Vehicle summersult up and down along the way.
Such don't happen in foreign nations, that FIRST repair the roads, then use NEW road worthy trailers to carry the load. Or better still, use rail lines to carry it and leave the roads for lighter cars.

Last I checked, this is still a capitalistic society, am ah right? am ah right huh

If you feel you can produce cement cheaper, why not go ahead, after all, the customer is king right?

This reminds me of those Buhari price control stories I used to hear, chai!

That's how Nigerians are always disturbing the likes of DSTV. Did someone force you to watch DSTV? Is DSTV like electricity? Roads? Rail?... which are all your rights? Shouldn't you be more concerned with making sure you get the services you pay for without being cheated, rather than being concerned with banning the service itself?

Funny.

If me I know how to produce cement for N500, I will sell it for N1000 if my overhead allows for such cost price. That way I will undercut every single seller out there and become a billionaire.

Did the government have to force MTN to reduce sim prices or did competition force them to?
Your argeument is is not totally straightforward.

In the first place, Cement production used to be in the exclusive list before liberalisation of the economy.
Secondly, the make up of the producers and the way they seem to set prices not related to market realities , suggest they're starting to act like some monopolistic cartel.
Thirdly, it's the duty of the government to protect consumers from monopolies and over pricing. That's why we have the consumer protection agency. Dangote and co get tax waivers and licences to open quarries and mine minerals to subsidize their production abilities. These were done to help them manufacture cheaply. That iddea of cheaper cement, has now been defeated.
Finally, Government imposed bans on importation of cement to help local producers compete. If those local operators start to abuse the process by selling at prices higher than imported ones, government should step in and help the economy by applying appropriate sanctions.
Regulating anti business practices by manufacturers is part of the responsibilities of the government. That's still capitalism at play...

At ₦3100 this morning, I'm the one selling at least price.

Importation of Cement is bad and a drain on the Economy's Jobs and funds. Buying Nigerian made Cement from Dangote is far better.

Cement is SA, equating to almost N2k

Re: Anybody Caught Selling Cement Above N2,500 Will Face Full Wrath Of The Law - CPC by COMPAQ(m): 8:47pm On Nov 09, 2020
Cement in Philippines at 192PHP equating to about N1.6k. Note that this is 40kg not 50kg. So equivalent 50kg would be about N2k.

Re: Anybody Caught Selling Cement Above N2,500 Will Face Full Wrath Of The Law - CPC by COMPAQ(m): 8:49pm On Nov 09, 2020
All these are abit cheaper than Nigeria, but reality is we are paying for an inefficient government and infrsateucturally deficient economy. No electricity, no rail to make it easier to transport, area boys demanding money per truck in their community, corruption everywhere in the value chain.
Re: Anybody Caught Selling Cement Above N2,500 Will Face Full Wrath Of The Law - CPC by COMPAQ(m): 8:55pm On Nov 09, 2020
On Kenya and Tanzania both also equate to about N2k and its actuly Dangote that brought it down from over N3k there.

Based on research 50kg bag is about 6.5 euro which is over N3k.

So all those saying cement is N800 where they are should please provide evidence.
