The Former Ghana President, Jerry Rawlings died in the early hours of Thursday as declared by Ghana presidency. His death was as a result of an undisclosed ailment. The political leader died at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in the country's capital, Accra.
Here are 10 Quick Facts About Jerry Rawlings;
1. His Full name is Jerry John Rawlings and was born and raised in Ghana. His mother, Victoria Agbotui is an Ewe from Dzelukope, Keta. His Father, James Ramsey John is a chemist and hailed from Scotland.
2. Rawlings attended Achimota College in 1967 for his secondary school education before proceeding to Ghana Airforce where his surname was changed to John and Rawlings as his middle name. He graduated from Takoradi in 1969 and was commissioned as a Pilot Officer.
3. He has four children with his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman who they met at Achimota College. The three daughters are Zanetor Rawlings , Yaa Asantewaa Rawlings, Amina Rawlings; and one son, Kimathi Rawlings
4. In May 1979, he led an unsuccessful coup weeks before the scheduled democratic election. In June 1979, Rawlings and other junior officers led a successful military coup with the aim of restoring normalcy in the country amidst widespread corruption. They ruled for 112 days before power was restored back to civilians.
Rawlings took back the control of the country after initially handing it over in December 31, 1981.
5. In 1992, Rawlings was elected as president after reviving the economy of the nation. He was subsequently reelected in 1996 and stepped down from the presidency in early 2001.
