Hi guys

So ,I am planning to start learning french in January. For starters ,I will join AF classes and see how it goes. I have zero knowledge in french.Reading through the thread ,I downloaded some apps already .I started today with Duolingo.

I am 26yrs. I will be starting my WES evaluation soonest .I have two or more degrees . The last time I checked my score using CRS tool , I had 464.(IELTS =7.5)

I honestly want to leave naija Jan./Feb. 2022

So ,a part of me is thinking, I should not bother to learn French considering the kind of money and energy I will be putting in or minimum CRS score might reduce

Another part of me ,wants to put in all work and make sure I leave Nigeria lastest Jan./Feb. 2022 (God willing) and besides ,the CRS score might keep going up with different regulations and guidelines Also ,I am not fan of writing IELTS many times (cos , what if one never gets the desired results . English is tricky)

Putting all my conditions and criteria in mind , will you advise me to go and learn French?

Guys ,I need advice from you .I am a single lady.
No short cut to Mapleland young lady. You have age advantage, max out your IELTS and simulate again if you will be in a favorable CRS score. Secondly, get ready to learn French, if you are a fast learner and your number of hours/week in class time is high like 15hrs+ apart from your personal efforts hours, you may need 7 months( +TEF prep). If not then consider more months. French is not a walk in the park either. Both IELTS & TEF are mad. You got to be madder & strategic to pass them. But, babe YOU CAN DO IT. Start with either of the said options and let's see what happens. Cheers.

I love the word you have to be madder and strategic..
That is just the summary.
Both ielts and Tef are mad.

See, ielts has messed a lot of people up, i know people who have 6 in listening, 5 sef in reading. But there are those who have had 9 in listening and reading. It's a battle you have to be determined to win and you can't honestly predict ielts. You just pray. I wrote ielts 3 times cos of writing. After i finally got writing right, crs score was too high, same ielts willsoon expire but hope won't be given up. If ielts expire before we pass tef, we write another one. And i don't have age on my side so what is your own excuse.

No short cut

I would advise you to recheck your CRS score using the calculator on page 1 of the main thread.

At 26 yrs old with 2 or more degrees, max points from IELTS and 3 years of experience, you may not need French (CRS 474?).

However, if the CRS continues to trend up (as you suspect), it will come in handy for your personal development and for CRS points. Go for it!

It seems no one is answering your question, yeah it is because your question is somehow difficult to answer directly. I will answer based on the info given to us then when I was still a student in my French school. I have finished and I'm post ITA. I am not very frequent here as before so I will be elaborate since you are a novice:

That, TEF prep classes is not a function of gathering materials alone but strategies. We were told that only CE( Reading) & CO(Listening) can materials sourcing work for, albeit with a strong foundation of French. Those two can be blazed.

However, for EE(Writing) & EO(Speaking), you need more of strategies & structuring. Therefore, only a tutor that has written TEF and passed or has probably helped others to pass can really help you, if you really want to pass TEF & not JUST LEARN French. Also, that a TEF examiner is not a guarantee that he can make you pass. He too must have written and passed to be of help. A TEF examiner is like our Nigerian Maths graduate that is now a WAEC examiner. He's provided with marking scheme, answers and manual to follow. Give him the same exam, he may not pass.

So dear, your best bet is to find someone that knows French & has passed TEF. To learn French & prepare for TEF is a long time. It is better to start well from the go to avoid time wasting. As for using Duolingo, that app is for general users or a supplement to main classes with a tutor, otherwise, using Duo to prepare for TEF is like a tortoise running a 1000m race. I hope that I have been helpful a bit.

I'm still in shock o...had to tell them to send me the scores through email to be sure embarassed embarassed.
The verse for today on my Bible app sha sums up how I feel right now - "Now, our God, we give you thanks, and we praise your glorious name." - 1 Chronicles 29:13 GNB. I may have put in a lot of work yeah, but I know it's only by His grace that I got these perfect scores.

For those who don't know any french, I recommend you start by reading Schaum's outline of French grammar (my french bible). If you ask me, they explain all the rules explicitly (French has many rules sha...chai). Other books I found really useful are the Competences series - for expression and comprehension orale - they come with mp3s so you can listen to french speakers in many different situations, and french vocabulary books. If you can, you can also read french articles online on sites like Le Monde, le Parisien, Figaro etc - this will help with both your reading and writing.

I posted the link to download said books previously. Please check my posts. I printed most of the books sha...reading on a PC gives me headaches so I feel this helped a lot

Also, try to listen to french speakers everyday - listening to le journal en francais facile on RFI was a morning ritual for me. You could also subscribe to some french YouTube channels - Français avec pierre is my personal favourite but there are many other good ones (Propulse Training and Enseignement de FLE are good for TEF practice questions). It doesn't really matter if you don't understand a word they are saying at first, but with time you'll realize that even though you may not understand the words individually, you get the general meaning of what they are saying.

In addition, the prepmyfuture app is really important (thanks @mariah203 for recommending it), especially for the writing section. You'll discover that for part 2 (the letter writing part), the introduction and conclusion have a standard format (that may even be up to 80 words!). Once you have that, for the body of the letter, you just need to make sure you use logical connectors and your grammar is good

Going into the exam, I was most wary of the speaking part but it turned out to be the easiest - I don't think they pay attention to your grammar as long as you can communicate your point effectively. I posted some sample questions for the section A earlier sha - again please check my previous posts (Sorry no energy to look for it) and @Bellerin posted some useful tips for the second part.

An important point to note is that examination is not a true test of knowledge (my french still needs loads of work) but once you learn what is expected of you in the exam and practice, practice, practice...success is sure.

Just keep at it...finally we will all come here to give praises

I started preparing for the TEF some time in September. Roughly a month...but just to put some context, I must add that I was rather more confident with other areas except speaking(I have taken the DELF B2 before).

For my speaking prep: I got familiar with the test types. I realised that for the first section, I'd basically have to phone someone to get more information on something. So I learned all of the standard phone scenarios e.g. stating reason for calling...paraphrasing existing information, checking if you heard correctly by paraphrasing what the interviewer said, using "can you tell me more about xyz..." are there extra charges not included in the ad.? Etc...this is really easy to hack.

For the convincing part, I imagined the scenarios in English and identified the "Frenchiest" way to express them...
So I had a handful of phrases for EVERY possible counter argument. Examples "What do you mean you're not interested?" That's a fair point but have you thought about this xyz benefit? "I really don't think that's a problem especially since...", "this is a great way to impress xyz..."(I remeber using this specifically to convince my interviewer that he should consider electric cars because his crush was a fan of the environment), etc...the list is endless but it really helps to have these at the back of your hand to fill in the awkward gaps when the interviewer is becoming a pain...find the French equivalent and memorize them basically...

An intensive 3 months (with the right amount of effort) can help with Speaking, Writing...I say this because it's easy to learn the standard writing required to get a high B2 in TEF. (I got a low B2 with relatively less prep than I should have) Speaking might be tricky because you need to improve your listening to hear what the examiner is saying...nonetheless that's a possible 6 points.

As for listening and reading, you may need longer to acquire the vocabulary and speed required to get points based on the TEF scoring charts.

I must encourage you that it is actually within reach and you should go for it, if anything, for when you eventually get to Canada....@njbybrthnly is a prime example of what is achievable when you put good effort in French.

Hello Nairalanders,

Why is this TEF thread short ? Are people actually successful in writing TEF exams?

Please can you share your experience and how you made high scores?

And if not, what do think it's responsible for it?

Please also suggest good French centres in Lagos and it's cost.

Thank you to all Nairalanders

Like you said the thread is quite short. I'd advise you read through. It really is a gold mine, truly.
At least 10 people have shared their experiences about how they achieved CLB7 in the 4 TEF competences.
I would say an equal number have told of how they took the exam multiple times.
Centres, tutors & resources and approx. costs have also been posted.

All the best!

Medicals sorted today. We move steadily.

I would like to advise anyone planning to go to Canada to learn French.

Some are young - 26. At 26, you should not have any issues learning new stuff. You never know when you would need French.

Please learn the sexy language.

You might be posted to La France from Canada, you might need to immigrate to La France. You might need to work with French speakers.

I love the sexy language.

Lol@ the statement in bold.

Bros, I'm not holding brief for any school or tutor but it's the economics of demand and supply. Assuming the number of well known reputable schools/tutors (AF, IEF etc) is fixed, the price charged WILL increase with an increase in the number of prospective TEF students.

Students then need to make a choice: bite the bullet & pay or self study with online resources (some are also not free) or look for other alternatives (old TEF students or good samaritans, this may work for those whose exams are a month away as a refresher but will definitely be sub-optimal for beginners, in my view).

#ComradeInTheStruggle

Ma sœur, je suis absolument d'accord avec tout ce que tu as écrit. Indeed, ọbẹ̀ to dùn, owó lóo paá!!! But that's only with respect to well-established institutions like AF and IEF. Their high tuition is justified because they have employees they have to pay.

On the hand however, when we talk of individual peeps in here and around charging between 30k-50k per month for nothing more than at a learning rate of 3hours -at most-, twice to thrice weekly. A beginner learning this way will, realistically, require nothing short of 7months to become transformed into a TEF material. Do that maths and you'll agree these guys are rip-offs!

I'm sure they will hate my guts for all I stand for here but then I won't stop saying things the way they are. You need to see the different WhatsApp groups we have these days, full of people who can't afford these exorbitant prices and therefore, have resorted to learning in groups by sharing. Offering reasonable fees would have seen these helpless people patronise our advertising TEF Tutors.

Ehenhen sis, il semble que tu as encore changé le mot de passe de ce truc..? Gave it a try way back but unsuccessful.
