I've always been a fan of pep guardiola's style of play. The free flowing, intricate and easy on the eye passing that has made the Spaniards one of the most revered coaches in world football. It's easy to see how his philosophy is played on the pitch but after watching his side's tame loss to Spurs on Saturday. It's easy to see that despite the beauty and creativity of his style of play, it is actually a pointless expression of so many passes for passing sake. Guardiola's style has been found out so many times over the years by managers who have believed in the pragmatic and ruthless tactic of direct football. What's the point of playing 50 passes to create a goal scoring chance when all it can take is three passes as Spurs showed on Saturday. I'm always a fan of beautiful football but Guardiola's style is beautiful on the eye but is lacking in efficiency. The whole point is to score a goal and not rack up possession. I believe tiki taka is outdated in the world of football. It shows why both man city and Barcelona who are the greatest purveyors of this style have yet to have the impact in Europe that they aspire for. I believe tiki taka is dead.

Well OP I am a fan of good football. I do not believe that tiki taka is dead, English football is not just suited to that. Football is more physical in england than in the rest of Europe.
Last 2 seasons, u wouldn't have said city and pep didn't do well with their brand of football, but like its often said in football, form is temporal and class is permanent.
A bad day at the office doesn't make the operations bad. And as for the Tottenham game, everybody knew mourinho was gonna park the bus and play on the counter. His precedents against pep even with Ronaldo in his Madrid team points to that.
What other way will u break down a team defending for 90mins if u don't control the possession?

The problem with Guardiola style of coaching is that he doesn't adapt his football to suit a particular opposition. He needs to learn how to do that.

Bros the tiki taka is dead. Football has moved away from a lazy no.10 and soft DM. Even Guardiola himself knows this. Rodri continues to be the weak link in man city's midfield; he can't tackle, he can only pass. Same as Busquet in Barca.
Check the last 3seasons, teams who made it to the champions league final didn't have lazy no.10. They use midfield destroyers (Goretzka, Casemiro, Fabinho).
My point is Guardiola lacks this type of midfielders.

I quite agree. The current Spanish coach did well at barca because he was able to tweak the passing style with direct long balls to the flanks and the Spanish national team still plays that way today.
Pep is so in too his style that they so often don't even have a plan B.

You are right brother. Pep has failed to adapt. That's why he has been eliminated from the Champions League since 2011 in the same pattern. He can bully the likes of burnley, West ham and Co in the Premier League but once they meet a solid team in the Champions League. They are found out. He hasn't learnt his lesson after so many years. Ancelotti did it to him with real, di Matteo did it with Chelsea, mourinho did it with inter. If he doesn't win the Champions League with this city side then he has failed woefully.

The whole idea of possession football is to avoid being in a position to make such tackles especially closer to your own third. Thats why tiki taka also involves having ur attacking players apply the press when they without possession and win the ball back up high the pitch to start another attack.
That system needs no hardman or midfield destroyer as he has no such work to do. It rather needs a carrick-esque distributor or regista a role that rodri and busquets typifies

It may not need the midfield destroyers in Spain, but certainly in England. Guardiolas best seasons were when Fernandinho was on top of his game.
Man City usually occupies the wings and channels, that is why they need destroyers in the middle to stop the few attacks coming their way.
