I really feel for the Federal Government of Nigeria. They spend so much to support education and research but have little to nothing in return in area of practical application to growing economy. From TETFund to PTDF, local to abroad scholarship but no result. Why can't knowledge work in our country?

What criteria do reach in selecting these institutions In my opinion this is not a balanced selection, take a look into the schools name here and cross check with the 6 existing regions the North still took the lead eventhough they're not adequately prepared in education! My advice is that it should be cancelled and reselected to reflect the 2 regions having 2 in the universities. Anything else isn't acceptable.

Tetfund,PTDF,NUC,Minister of Education.All these key education MDAs being administered by people who went to university through remedial and quota system. It's all good for the South.

IMO, Private universities need these funds more because they will come out with tangible results and solutions compared to these federal ones. also the accountability in private universities is very obvious for all to see but you will see how this N1b each will reduce to millions very soon

Not all the research are junks. There are good ones there but the average Nigeria expects the lecturers and researchers to turn every paper into a working entity model. They don't know about partnering industry and smes who are suppose to read some of those papers and apply them where within reach.
A research that exposes the preservative effect of ginger on a range of food can be used by smes but in Nigeria, we expect the researcher to start the business of using his results, make a lot money, then we follow or copy him blindly.

What are the benefits of those researches to average common man on the street or even their students who must buy their ways out of university either cash of kind?

They are still teaching all subjects with ancient textbooks that has lost their relevance in modern sciences and needed technology to develop human capacity in respect to productivity.

Forget it, education is simply a fraud in Nigeria.

the failure of government, our economy and also the inability for us to seek an alternative revenue source instead of oil is the fault of the university education system that has refused to stimulate the economy by coming up with innovative solutions and ideas. Universities outside the country churn out research that is the driving force for the products we massively import into the country, from electronics to drugs ,machines and industrial processes.
It is very unfortunate ,that even internally universities have the funds to sponsor and carry out these researches, these lecturers are only content with making students cram and recite past course contents and passing exams, there is no innovation whatsoever, it is pathetic, the only thing these lecturers know how to do is cry that they need money, which university computer science department has attempted to remodel it's computer programming curriculum and teach students how to build fantastic applications.

Lol. You are either naive or ignorant. If monies from TETfund are adequately utilised, the educational sector wouldn't have been in such a mess. This isn't to dispute the fact that money is needed for research and lecturers suffer to fund theirs, but corruption has so eaten into the system that when monies are eventually disbursed we never see the effects. TETFund is a major cash out for Nigerian professors.

Not many private universities. Many of them are burdened with regular lecturing and knowledge dissemination, leaving them with little resources for research and advancement of knowledge.

Which useless research? 12billion that would have been put to better use in the Agricultural sector to boost food production.
Which positive researchs do lecturers carry out in Nigeria? The projects of students, what do they do with those ones?
I am a big follower of National geographic channel & discovery channel, those are proper research. When this funds is released, all the beneficiaries will want to travel abroad.
