Normally the snakes will not bite, but snakes sometime lie next to people for warmth and when you roll on them or frighten them during sleep the bite protect themselves.

The snake could be born in a house and grow up in that house without anyone harmed or notice it lives there.
There are times and find missing pet snakes of previous resident still living in the roof.

When I was in Ago Iwoye, living in Ambassador's Lodge adjacent to Better Life .The house next to us had a old couple and two students in there and frequently see a big black snake along the ceiling line outside the house but only at night for at least 2 years, and I spent 4 years in that Lodge.
it was as thick as my arm and about 8ft long

OP Fumigate your surroundings....put iron net on ur windows and doors...ensure your ceilings are properly closed!
The snake came to your building because it spotted that dead rat and followed it!
Whenever you spot a rat in your surroundings esp busy areas, know that a snake is around the corner!
