Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has directed its members nationwide to shut ports operations and begin a three-day warning strike from Monday, December 7, to protest the total take over of the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway by heavy-duty trucks, inflicting untold hardship on other road users.https://shipsandports.com.ng/tin-can-road-union-orders-members-to-shut-seaports/ 6 Likes 2 Shares

Corruption is the major reason why those trucks are there When they have been extorted by endless unions and task forces, Police, Army and the rest, how do you expect such a driver to go and park somewhere else? Those trucks are not leaving in the next five years. Corruption has come to stay in port activities 45 Likes 2 Shares |

They should say why they're really going on strike, it's not because of the Access roads that they've been using like that for ages. |

izzou:The NPA has ordered the temporary suspension of container unstuffing activities at the terminals in order to reduce the congestions, but containers are still being unstuffed there after paying bribes ranging from 70k to 200k to taskforce. 3 Likes |

Had it been our rail system was working fine all these trucks won't be causing problems on our roads. And by the way wasn't money earmarked for reconstruction and rehabilitation of this road. 15 Likes 1 Share |

Ishilove: Exactly. That's the exact reason I believe they won't leave anytime soon. Most of these unions and taskforce are just to enrich whoever formed them. I wonder why the people and the government are silent 4 Likes |

izzou:My dear brother, I was discussing it with someone today. There is so much corruption in the sector, the biggest gainers being the custom officers themselves. We cannot move forward in this country until we change our mindset as a people. Business owners are the worst hit because when we transfer some of these added expenses to the customers, they start complaint and shove off to find other alternatives. 12 Likes |

Ishilove: I really feel for Business owners...They suffer it most This issue of congestion and extortion is contributing significantly to the rise in cost of commodities, but nobody is looking in that direction. I pray the strike would yield some fruits, but with the set of wicked people benefiting from the hardship? I doubt 9 Likes |

Open eastern sea ports to decongest Lagos they say. NO. Let them continue to develop only Lagos and later be complaining of congestion and traffic. How can only one port be serving 200 million population when there are other alternatives in the east. Where else in the world does this happen? Just because you don't want development for the igbo region and you don't want them to leave Lagos. 23 Likes |

Please all northerners working at the port should avoid the protests. This is a ploy by the south to unseat our darling daddy Buhari. |

They are clamouring for the wrong things. Lagos is not the only state with functional ports. Decentralize the ports , open up all the ports in the south south and south east. bad governance is the issue. nothing will change until govt is changed . 14 Likes |
