800, 000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNtech Covid-19 vaccine have been delivered to the United Kingdom, for onward administration on those prioritized for the jabs by the National Health Service, (NHS), meaning 400, 000 people can take the jab which will be given in two doses.

Croydon University Hospital in south London was one of the first hospitals in the UK to receive the vaccine which proves to be 95 percent effective on the virus.

Matt Hancock, UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care says, “The UK is the first country in the world to have a clinically approved vaccine for supply.”

While taking the jab is not mandatory, those who are vaccinated will be given ID cards which would be a form of reminder for the second dose.

The card reads: “Don’t forget Covid-19 vaccination…Make sure you keep this record in your purse/wallet. Enjoy life. Protect yourself. Don’t forget to attend your appointment to have your second dose of vaccine. You will have your best protection after two doses.”

The first recipients of the vaccine will be those who are over 80 years, care home workers and NHS staff.

The vaccine arrived in the UK when more than 61, 000 Covid-19-related deaths and 1.72 million cases have been recorded.

The UK is expected to receive up to four million doses by the end of this month; enough for two million people.

It placed an order for 40 million doses of the Pfizer/BioNtech vaccine, and also secured 357 million doses of seven other vaccine candidates.

Care home residents in Scotland are expected to start receiving the vaccine from December 14. The vaccine will be freely administered and managed by health services in the UK.

The Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II (94), and the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Phillip, (99), are expected to take the jab.

England eased its one-month lockdown rules on December 2, opening international travels.
