UPDATE NIGER BRIDGE ONITSHA
This bridge is technically not being built by Nigerian government. America demanded projects in different geographic regions that Abacha's loot would fund, and Nigeria included the second Niger bridge so that Nigerians abroad will not protest the release of the funds to disappear as other previously repatriated Abacha loot. Then US wrote the terms of funds release to make it clear to Nigeria that re-looting of the money, diversion of the funds due to nepotism towards the stated projects will have dire consequences. Obviously, the gratitude for the continuation of this project after 2015 should go to America!

If Nigeria broke the terms of the agreement that led to the United States release of the millions of dollars, they would confiscate Nigerian assets globally until Nigeria forfeits the funds back to the US.

Without such strong agreement, the highly nepotic despot in Aso Rock would NEVER have funded a bridge in an area of Nigeria he openly professed so much hatred for "not voting for him"

Meanwhile, the other infrastructural projects (Expressways) built in the north and west with the $311 million dollars Abacha's loot is free for the people and won't be tolled. But this bridge built between the East and Midwest will be tolled to extract the total refund cost of the project from the people. Go Figure!

If the Nigerian government wanted not to build the bridge, they would have removed it and added another project.
They gave started working on the bridge before the Abacha loot came onboard.
Just know that the Buhari administration wants to leave a signature project in every Zone of the country.

Please explain to me what the government of Jonathan built in the south east. He cut the ribbon on the project and then did nothing. His works Minister allowed the entire expressways in Enugu and Anambra to collapse.

The push to build the second Niger Bridge is thanks to the good work of Fashola who also is reconstructing the collapsed Enugu-Awka and Umunya-Awka expressways.

That is for all the yoruba phobes who like to blame them for all SE woes.

It depends on how the FGN determines it. Originally it was setup as a PPP by the Obasanjo ADMINISTRATION along with Lagos Ibadan expressway . However with no company willing to fund it the FG first allocated money from the Nigerian Sovereign Wealth Investment Fund. Then under Fashola it was funded directly by the FG.

I dont know how anybody can call the second Niger bridge a "South East" project? A bridge that has one end in the South East, and the other end in the South South. This is a South East/ South South project.

You are welcome my sister.

They play politics with everything and try so much to suppress the truth about the fact that the bridge isn't free. While other projects built with Abacha loot will be free for the citizens of those sub regions.

Also, if we want to thank people, everyone especially the last two presidents should be thanked! Not just one man who merely included it because US demanded a geographic spread of projects executed with the refund.

Not exactly true. Gej began pilling work on the bridge.By the time he left work had reached such a level that their wasn't any reasonable excuse to abandone it. One of the first things buhari did on assuming power was to stop that project in the guise of renegotiating it. It only began again after 2-3 years.

I give it to buhari for still continuing the project, and our governor's and senators for the pressure they have constantly heaped on the presidency.
But I know Bubu would never give the East anything if he had an option. You doubt me? why is the Enugu airport taking longer than that of other regions ?
why is the SE not experiencing any rail project like many other regions?
why are we excluded from the gas master plan of our country?

why aren't we represented in any security organization?

Spot on! Couldn’t have said it better myself!

Can you believe that they’re still ‘working’ at AIIA, Enugu more than a year after work commenced!? I mean, just what the hell are they building there....Heathrow Terminal 6? I can bet the night landing facilities they promised to install hasn’t been done! And lemme not start on the int’l terminal building that’s still at the stage GEJ left it, while that of Kano has been finished nicely....with sexy surroundings and landscaping added in for good measure!

Goodluck had 5 years to complete second Niger Bridge. In 2015 less than 2% of work on the bridge had happened. It was structured as a PPP project and the FGN was to contribute just 20% with the rest raised by private investors. As it was NSIA had not found any investors willing to fund it.

It was Fashola as Minister of Works who got the FGN to fund the entire project which is when real work started and is why it is today at over 50% completion. As owner of the bridge the FGN cannot toll it not unless it tolls other bridges and expressways in the country. This is still being debated because second niger bridge is in the same boat as Lagos Ibadan expressway which is also a PPP project taken over by government that originally was to be tolled.

As for Enugu airport, Hadi Sirika was very right about shutting down a runway that was a disaster waiting to happen. Safety is the first concern of aviation. Of course people questioned why it was taking so long to reopen and its because of budgetary problems that happened in the wake of covid 19 with oil prices collapsing. I do not know Sirika from Adam but he made the right call to get things right rather than do what is politically correct. I have a British classmate who was a corporate jet pilot and he told me that the Abuja, Enugu and Asaba runways were some of the worst he had landed in while flying in Nigeria between 2010-2014.

PPP has failed on 2nd Niger Bridge, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway—Fashola

By Business Hilights On Jan 24, 2018

Babatunde Fashola explaining issues on the go to President Buhari and Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi recently.

Considering what can best be described as observed cold feet of supposed investors in the development of several key infrastructure projects across the country including the 2nd Niger Bridge construction and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway expansion, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Barr. Babatunde Fashola, on Tuesday, made it clear before the House of Representatives Committee on Works, that PPP is dead.

Accordingly, he argued that for the two key projects to see the light of the day, the Federal Government must take full control of the multibillion naira projects now or allow them to become abandoned projects.

He noted further that the highly celebrated Public Private Partnership (PPP) option on both schemes will only continue to delay the projects, much as it appears attractive to core investors.

Business Hilights recalls that the Second Niger Bridge had two groups of core investors according to an existing arrangement prepared by the last administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

By that arrangement, whereas the federal government will foot about 20 per cent of the cost, both Anambra and Delta States’ government will contribute 40 per cent while the remaining 40 per cent will come from corporate investors which the government had refused to make public.

However, towards the end of the former Governor Peter Obi administration in Anabmra, he came out to reject the PPP arrangement, saying that as the economic situation appears, Anambra can no longer foot the 20 per cent out of the 40 per cent to be contributed alongside with Delta State government.

It is also on record that the Delta State government followed Anambra State government to pull out of the 2nd Niger Bridge development PPP agreement citing similar reasons.

Further investigations by Business Hilights South East Bureau Chief showed that the pull out of the two states also raise confidence crisis in the minds of the veiled corporate investors on the bridge, thus leaving the construction expenditure on the shoulders of the federal government till now.

It would also be recalled that the key attraction for the corporate investors was the clause of tolling the bridge and road, but the emerging assumption of full responsibility by the federal government may definitely collapse the planned tolling as it would be an issue of marginalization if after building infrastructure across the federation with commonwealth, some will be tolled while others will be free.
