The Lagos State Government on Monday said processes are in place for the review of the state’s Child Rights Law, 2015.

The Director, Directorate for Citizens Rights, Mrs Oluwatoyin Odusanya, stated this at the essay and debate competition organised for the pupils of the state to celebrate the Human Rights Day 2020 with the theme ‘Recover better, stand up for human rights’.

Speaking on the sideline of the programme, Odusanya said the review was necessary to fill the gaps in the law to ensure that the rights of the children in the state are protected.

She said, “It’s important to catch the children young and let them know what human rights is all about so as they grow up, they won’t infringe on other people’s rights and ensure that their rights are protected.

“This year’s theme was derived from the pandemic; it is to encourage people to recover better emotionally and psychologically from this pandemic and the human right abuse pandemic, to ensure they’re healed through the process of knowing their right and places that are available that would assist them in enforcing their right.

“We’re sensitising children and their parents on child abuse, early marriage, and Lagos State is also in the process of reviewing the child rights law to ensure that the gaps that are within the child rights law can be filled & the rights of the children can be also protected.

”The Solicitor General/Permanent Secretary, Ms Titilayo Shitta-Bey also emphasised on the need for Children to know their rights early in life.

She said, "Human Rights Day is observed globally and the importance of it is to educate people as to the rights they have enshrined in the constitution.

"As to the Children, we have legislation, the Child Rights Law and they need to know about their rights because at the end of the day if you educate your Child early enough, they will grow up knowing their rights and how to protect those rights they have.

"The Guest of Honour, Chief Magistrate Kikelomo Ayeye, in her keynote address titled ‘The role of the judiciary in safeguarding the rights of a child’, noted that the judiciary had the duty of protecting the rights of the children due to their vulnerability.

While urging the state government to increase the budget allocated to the ministry and agencies working for children, Ayeye noted that the failure to attend to the needs of the children would be disastrous for the nation.

However, the pupils of the Aje Comprehensive School won the junior category of the debate topic, ‘Right to education, is it the responsibility of the government of the parent while the pupils of the Babs Fafunwa Millenium Secondary School won the senior category of the debate topic, ‘Wearing of facemask, is it a human rights issue or not.

’The pupils of the Ayedere Ajibola Senior High School won the drama category of the competition while the pupils of the Doregos Private Academy won the first runner-up.

Poverty is one of reasons children are sent to hawk in the streets. The poor ones who do it seem to live better than the ones who don’t.

Without a sustainable social safety net by the government, people will continue to put their kids in situations that are not ment for kids.

When it comes to issue of minor, a lot of damage has been done and most of it done in ignorance. No sensitivity and. Nonchalant attitudes from some parents, while some are deliberately flouting and acting against the child right. We need a whole new society to make a better and conducive place the children to live in and not pollute their minds.

Meanwhile with just 3k, I will design a premium 3D logo with hyper realistic concepts.

If it's not part of the curriculum, they should include it from Primary school so kids can be educated about their rights.

I learnt about our rights while in Junior secondary via the efforts of an NGO.

Besides, I doubt if BRFs policy of arresting parents of child hawkers is still in enforcement

There are many things bedevilling a child in Nigeria. One of those is the right of every child to know there parents. It sounds simple right?

The government should ensure that public and private hospitals have the facility to conduct a DNA for every child at birth. The reason is simple. When I see children begging on the roadside, it's always with their mothers. Except the father is dead, if a DNA is carried out at birth, every man must be responsible for his offspring together with the woman of course.

And there is also the other issue of men raising children that are not theirs which is a story for another day. The point is that when the man finds out in the future, he loses the love he has for that child which is not the child's fault.

The right for every child to truely know their parents and the parents held responsible is important in our world today. Thank you

Too many children on Lagos road hawking pure water and begging on the roads, majorities of these kids are transported with cattle down to Lagos in trailers from the north. Arewa and Northern elders should be ashamed!

El Rufai should be ashamed , Ganduje should be ashamed , you can not be having children like pigs , even pigs cares for their little ones, even goats provides for their little ones!

Shameless Elders
