The Benin people where actually known as Efa or Ifa people in time past by the Yoruba. Ooni was the chief priest in Ife that was practicing the version of Benin Iha divination which they called Ifa.

The fact that the Ooni was a mere chief priest is very well known in Yoruba land. The Awujale of Ijebu said so himself. Yoruba historian Samuel Johnson in his , The history of Yoruba people, piblished in 1921. wrote that the Ooni was a mere shrine keeper.

The Ooni was elevated to the status of an Oba in the 1930s.

Prof. Biobaku has suggested that the eastern fringe of what is now Yorubaland was in pre-Yoruba days thinly inhabited by the ancestors of the modern Benin people, a people which he called the Efa. And if recent archaeological evidence would seem to indicate that Ife was built not before the first decade of the 16th century thereby making it to be younger than Benin, then the Oranmiyan tradition has been miscon-strued and the Benin version (The Oba of Benin's version,), not Egharervba's version, becomes more tenable.

Ooni is a king and also a priest because he absorbs the role of oduduwa as a king and and also the custodian of culture, rituals and traditions, that is why pre- colonial period Obas of Benin accorded much respect to the house of oduduwa, informing ife about all religious and political decisions and seeking permission to take some actions .. . so the Op is partially but not totally right

history is story, and anybody can tell a story,but story authenticity is known through archeology,art, traditions and influence. ife version is the authentic, why?Benin tradition and ife tradition bear witness that oduduwa son founded the Oba dynasty in Bini, until recent when the Benin tradition added a twist that oduduwa came from Benin, even though these version never existed in the ife version.


Here are some reasons why oduduwa never migrated from Benin


(1) oduduwa name is Yoruba ( odu da iwa)
(2) Yoruba people credited him for developing a sophisticated civilization that exceed the one been practiced during the reign of obatala,which means oduduwa was never from Benin, because the Benin during the time of oduduwa were probably stark nudist,even during the colonial period when Yoruba people are rocking agbada and kembe,Edo Benin needs the oba permission to cover their unclothedness, oduduwa bronze art depicts a man who wax in royalty and glory, clothed in honour
(3) oduduwa from Benin theory is a recent work, reasonable people and scholars goes for the ancient
(4) the reason why Edo people demanded a Prince from ife is because their own kings were corrupt and unprogressive, if oduduwa is truly from Benin he would have displayed these attributes to the people of ife afterall the blood of the ogiso is in his vein too,but the case was different with oduduwa,during his life time, progress,peace and beauty is what the ife people experienced......no wonder Edo people begged him to rule over them too,but smart oduduwa sent his toughest son oranmiyan who took no nonsense, oranmiyan banished the useless ogisos,prohibited Edo language in the palace and made Yoruba the royal language, these made some Edo party rebel against oranmiyan, oranmiyan in his wisdom impregnated one of the chief daughter and told the Edo people that when the child grows up he will be their king, oranmiyan return to ife finally happy that he has left that land of anger finally, his son was deaf and dumb, but by oranmiyan advice the boy spoke at last, and you know what the boy was smart,he spoke Yoruba as his first word further confirming that Yoruba was Benin Royal language
