Someone created a thread sometime ago asking if the name Onitsha is an Igbo word.
Well here's the answer to that question;
The Original name of the town is Aniocha and not Onitsha, and yes, you guessed it, Aniocha extend beyond to the other side of the niger river way into delta state. But then you must be wondering; how did the name survive in the Igbo speaking part of Delta State but changed to Onitsha on the other side?

The simple reason is the white man's arrival at the river port. When the white landed at the port of Aniocha(Onitsha) and began his trade with the people there, the best pronunciation he could come up with was something like a-ni-cha because of his accent, and as you know, the man who truely gives the name by which history will remember a person or place is the man who pens the name on paper. By the time the local people could learn to read and write, the name Aniocha had now been written as Onitsha by the white man for some long years. This error is not peculiar to Aniocha(Onitsha) alone, no, it is a very common error that permeates different geographical locations, cultures, etc in particularly Africa and some parts of Latin America. Reason being, we did not have a literate culture of our own which is why we do not have a record of our history before the white came. Some of this errors have been traced and corrected but most remain, perhaps lost in the sands of time.

Nice analysis,
However, you will hit a brick wall if I tell you to explain if it's the whites that gave these equally ancient towns their names.

Onicha Enugu
Onicha olona
Onicha ebonyi
Onicha ugbo

I think Onicha was the right spelling and pronunciation of the town Onitsha before the whites came and spelt what they liked. There was Aniocha also in Anambra and another in Igbo Delta, so that doesn't count.

There is no mince in the spelling and pronunciation of Onitsha. There are many towns bearing Onicha in Igboland. Even in Ebonyi Ans like two or three in IMO state, Enugu and others.
Their history is not that confusing just that many people are revising it to make them appear like visitors from Bini like they ignorantly accepted before they changed it to migrants from Igboland back to Igboland.
That Bini history has cost them much. It has cost them Awada and is about to cost them Fegge and GRA. The GRA is strongly being dragged by Nkwelle Ezunanka as we speak and they are winning.
Before they understand the impact of that myopic history will be when they will be left with only Omoba. Sometimes I pity them but this is reality. If you make decisions without foresight it will haunt you forever

Onicha be it ugbo, olona or onicha ado are one stock of people historically...and same dialectical stock ..ie language.

The other onichas you are attaching, I still don't understand what they are doing there or where they come from.......

As far as history is concerned, they have no business with Onicha ado, olona and ugbo.

Onishe is an Igbo from what we now call Anioma arushi, and that's where Onitsha gets its name from. Onisha is actually more correct as the city name than Onicha

This is a very interesting topic.

My parent told me that

Onicha Uku
Onicha Olona
Onicha Ugbo and
Onicha Nmili (Onitsha)

were of the same parent. When they became adult they settled down in where they are today in Delta State. But the brothers had a bitter quarrel and this got Onicha Nmili very angry that he decided to cross the Niger river to settle down where Onitsha is today.

I don't know how true this story is, but Onitsha people has similar dialect with the other Onicha's. that is quite different from other typical Igbo speaking people in the core south east.

Igbo Delta is that part of the country where Murtala Mohammed ordered the execution of over 500 innocent adult males in what is best remembered as the "Asaba massacre"

keep your history to yourself.
and for the record it's called Asaba which is the present administrative capital of Delta State.
You can call them Anioma people of Delta State, they are of the Anioma Ethnic stock and not Igbo Delta as you wrongly claimed.

So, onicha local government and other Onichas could not have splintered and moved far within Igbo land in pre colonial times?

You see, when people are not Igbos they sound stvpid talking about Igbo matters. You know next to nothing on these matters because y I u are not even from Igbo land.

Do you know that Murtala mohammed killed those hundreds of innocent people because they are Igbos, a people who chewed out his entire battalion at Abagana and crushed him twice at the bridge. His frustrations about Igbos made him kill any Igbo he could find across the bridge.

Op has very interesting angle, very plausible, but I dispute his conclusion. The official name and full call for Onitsha is Onitsha n'Idu. There is not a corresponding Aniocha n'Idu.

It is possible, if one reversed the Op's reasoning, that Aniocha may actually be the tongue corrupted version of Onitsha, helped by inter-trade and settlement of foreigners who could not properly articulate Onitsha....and Aniocha became their default.

I think those pushing the narrative of trying to change the origin have inferiority complex, if not what about the other onichas in Igboland
