No single Yoruba elder spoke up when both Obasanjo and Fela were detained in prison.

Abiola won because he was the philanthropist of philanthropists. People actually talked about and prayed to encounter Abiola just once in a lifetime having heard how a single encounter turned around the lives of individuals who were able to meet and relay their problems to him. Abiola made it a duty to always reach out to the poor and oppressed of the society.

This relentless lifestyle of giving (to a fault) endeared Abiola to all and sundry across Nigeria, irrespective of the tribe, religion or gender.

The campaigns before the election also played according to same sentiments. People were being given Abiola branded food product packs and other benefits as if to give the people a glimpse of what to expect if he became president. The people did not doubt this gesture having known him for lifestyle of reaching out to the poor.

In other words, his gifts made a way for him, so much so that people were ready to die in order to help him reclaim his mandate.

On another note, Abiola may not have been completely innocent as people made him out to be; having dined with the powers that be. However, he appears to have compensated for his misdeeds (if any) by standing by the people’s mandate given to him, perhaps with a view to change the fortunes of the nation. We see these play out in hero movies all the time; an individual that is part of a system but unhappy with the suffering of the people. This individual becomes a hero by using the resources that he got from the system to bring down the evil system that is causing the suffering of the people. A true patriot and hero!

One commentator put it aptly, when he said “Abiola committed a class suicide“ going against the same powerful people who helped make him affluent.

Abiola won because IBB backed him and this gave most of the south , MB and even parts of the north to vote for him.

It was this endoresment from IBB and a section of the SMC that made people troop out and vote for Abiola.

The Igbo did not vote for Abiola for reasons best known to them and I know they played a huge part in the annulment and were heavily invested in the Abacha govt and Also rock court that they can not be counted in any way or form part of the call to return to democratic rule and I also know they went as far as rallying support for Abacha's transition to civil rule.
