POLITICS: Edo Guber: Issues That Hit Ize-Iyamu’s Candidacy.
Published 3 hours ago on January 7, 2021.

The nullification of the All Progressives Congress’ APC’s ticket in the Edo State governorship election on Wednesday came out of the blues. There were indeed remarkable issues that hit Ize-Iyamu’s candidacy.

It came at a time that members of the victorious Peoples Democratic Party, PDP both in Edo State and at the national level were beginning to have a sense of trepidation over what some claimed as the legal landmines that were being placed to upturn the party’s remarkable victory in the September 19, 2020 election.

On the other hand, those around Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the APC candidate were beginning to feel a sense of expectation that Godwin Obaseki’s certificate troubles would give the victory to the APC.
As some asked, if there is no trouble, why did the PDP and the governor go all the way to frustrate the trial? Others asked, why did he not simply present the certificate as demanded?

Those issues are, however, still to be decided by the court and despite the “photocopy malfunction,” the APC according to sources still remains hopeful.

Well, that was until Wednesday, January 6, 2021 when the PDP landed what looked like a TKO on the APC in the Benin High Court.

The case arose from what many had thought was a trifle, but they were legal issues that hit Ize-Iyamu’s candidacy.

But from the beginning, it was predicted to be a tough one for the APC.

The case was brought against the APC and its running mate, Abdul Ganiyu Abudu by Hon. Sunday Kadiri from Ogbona ward, in Etsako West Local Government Area of the state.

Given the mention of Ogbona, it is easy for many to trace or guess the originator of the suit.

Ogbona ward is the stronghold of the powerful national vice-chairman, South-South of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih.

Orbih was chairman of the PDP in Edo State for about nine years and in that period gave a remarkable rebuff to the ascendancy of the APC during the Oshiomhole years.

For whatever reasons, Orbih may have scented an opportunity after the emergence of Abdul Gani as Ize-Iyamu’s running mate and moved Kadiri to front the judicial action.

At the heart of the contentions against Gani’s presence on the ticket was the claim by the plaintiff that he presented different names which in the view of some may have also been spelling errors in his credentials.

When news of the suit first emerged in August, it was alleged that in the documents presented to INEC, that while Gani Audu swore to an affidavit with his name as Audu Abudu Ganiyu, his other documents bore conflicting names.

It was alleged that while his name on the affidavit is Audu Abudu Ganiyu, in his voter’s card, his name is Audu Abdul Ganiyu.

Besides, it was also alleged that in his APC membership card, his name appeared as Gani Audu.

Also, the WASSCE/GCE certificate he submitted reflected  Audu Ahudu Ganeyu.

It was based on the circumstances that the plaintiff alleged that he provided false information to INEC and hence his disqualification.

The decision by Justice Courage Ogbebor immediately translated to a loss for Pastor Ize-Iyamu’s candidacy was voided as he could not have contested without a running mate.

With his mind in Abuja focused on the certificate forgery case against Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu apparently did not envisage what happened.

He has, however, given an immediate order for the judgment to be appealed.

“This judgment, to say the least, is unfortunate and utterly wrong,” he said.

“I have already instructed my counsel to appeal against the judgment as I am convinced that the Court of Appeal will dispassionately consider the facts presented before the court and arrive at a just decision in accordance with the law.

“I urge all my teeming supporters to remain calm and law abiding. Justice will surely prevail in this matter,” Ize-Iyamu stated.

Meanwhile, one of the aides of Ize-Iyamu sent me the piece below - this evening too, after they left court where judgment has been reserved for Saturday the 9th.

IN RESPONSE TO OBASEKI'S FORGERY CASE, AND SETTING THE RECORDS STRAIGHT

I believe there is need for me to reiterate the fact that I am not a member of any political party, neither am I affiliated to any political party in Nigeria. And I strongly doubt if I will ever belong to any political party. So, let's get that straight.

Still on the subject matter, firstly, Obaseki was accused of not having a credit pass in English language in one or two sittings. And secondly, it was said that he had just Three Credit passes without English. But bear in mind that he read Arts as a course. And for one to be admitted to read any Arts courses in the past, and, even now in Nigerian universities, one must have a credit pass in the English Language, which Obaseki doesn't have.

Up till now, nothing has been put forward by him to establish that he met the complete criteria to have been admitted to read any of the courses in UI. Also, I should have expected Obaseki and the UI authorities to re-tender the complete Degree certificate document, as well as his entry qualification details which they used to have admitted him into UI. That will end all the noise about Obaseki's eligibility to contest as Governor of Edo State.

This would not be the first time that I would have criticized politicians when they must have goofed. I criticize President Muhammadu Buhari more than any politician in Delta and Edo States. The simple fact is that Obaseki and the said Deputy Registrar has goofed. It is a shame for all of us because it will further dent Nigeria image, and the respected reputation of UI as Nigeria's premier university. Those still in doubt, should create time to read through this falsehood and reports by the supposed Deputy Registrar, Legal, Mr. Abayomi Ajayi, of the premier University.

As said by a friend, a man as enlightened as Obaseki and his informal Aide made a photocopy of his certificate without the date and signatures. What kind of mistake is that? That is, if it was even a mistake in the first place. Obaseki and his Aide should understand that a document without date or signatures is valueless. What prevented him from showing his original certificate with date and signatures on it when this case was instituted against him?

The usual certificate of Degrees are just the normal size of any Degree certificate. It doesn't make sense for a Deputy Registrar of a University to defend a document he terms as incomplete, as a legal document. What stopped the Registrar from tendering Obaseki's complete Degree certificate in their records to the court?

All of these tells you that the country is debauched with criminals in public offices. They can be bribed with money to fool themselves, even before a court, without being troubled if their integrity is stained along the line. It is obvious even to a person with poor judgement that the controversy surrounding the Obaseki's certificate forgery case has a lot of loopholes and questions.

The writer is politically biased. First & foremost, the Court has no business in veering into how a candidate got admission into a tertiary institution more than 40 years ago especially when their was yet to be JAMB & no uniformed admission requirements/process. What can the court to do? void his admission?
Secondly, the UI which is the issuing authority of Obaseki certificate has authenticated the certificate. About the photocopy machine debacle, even Ize iyamu witness testified that such do happen.

Op go and find the meaning of technical knockout. You can't call a judgement of a state high court as technical knockout. By the way that judgement will be set aside by the appeal court with some scolding for the high court judge. The matter was even filed out of time as confirmed by two inec witnesses but the judge was bent on doing what he was paid for.

All these guys are just making noise.

Why didn't they resume it that the dates dey were shouting about could have been a photocopy error...that shows how shallow they think.

This one is making noise again about English language as prerequisite for admission...he should first go and check the admission criteria of 1976 and University waivers then...they should stop comparing admission criteria of today to that of 1976...even as at 1980...I know with three A level subjects u can gain admission into the university...cos my dad did.

They should go and get more sense....I am surprise how cheaply these politicians make demselves look with their lowsy writeups

Which logic? They were in a haste to adjust the machine setting or the photocopy was done in 1960? He graduated no doubt but for whatever reason maybe laziness or tardiness he actually forged the certificate in 2016 rather than applying to UI what he later did in 2020 that is his problem

And to worsen it, a Federal high court has earlier given judgment on the issue - dismissed it totally and even awarded cost against Obaseki camp.
