OAU cancels 2020/2021 session, resumes 2019/2020 session February 8

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, has fixed resumption of the 2019/2020 academic session for February 8, 2021.

Academic activities were disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, and a strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) .

OAU spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, said in statement that the Senate met on Tuesday, January 19 to approve numerous decisions including the cancellation of the 2020/2021 academic session.

While the 2019/2020 academic session resumes on February 8, only final year students in the Faculty of Pharmacy, Clinical Students in the College of Health Sciences, and year four students in the Faculty of Agriculture are allowed to resume residence.

“All other students are to attend their classes virtually,” the statement read.

The university cautioned that staff, students, and other members of the university community must strictly adhere to safety guidelines to combat the spread of COVID-19.

The approved resumption programme is subject to periodic review in line with the realities of the pandemic, according to the institution.

wow thats crazy. time keeps on slipping away from us. somebody will graduate at the age of 40 in this nigeria

This people are not serious.
Most private universities are already in 2020/2021 session, some serious public universities are already in second semester to resume 2020/2021 session b4 April.
If a university is serious, they will definitely meet up b4 the end of next year.

For OAU to cancel that year, I wonder what's the fate of those that wrote Jamb that year.
Well, ThankGod each universities are free to bring their decision, and not a general factor for all schs. So its their headache abeg

Schooling in Nigeria is a big risk.

Government alone can prolong the years of students in school to graduate mean while the person age is going. After school the same government organization will ask student within a fixed age range to apply. embarassed

I don tire, it's better you put your kids in school early, the earlier the better..

Well for now corona is responsible for our break.

1.No shame in graduating at 40...there are people who never graduate for their lives...

2.We all know why...COVID. And some students have vulnerable people at home...plus COVID affects people badly.

Okay, let's imagine a situation where one COVID positive student lands in the crowded hostels in Ife...and said student is asymptomatic...

In times like this, it is better to assume the worst may happen.

Besides, if the school stayed open, and the worst happened...Nairalanders will be screaming at the school for being 'irresponsible'.
