That Conte second season is where the board got it wrong, after winning the league Matic wouldn’t have been sold, Fabinho(not Bakayoko) ought to have been signed to rotate with either Matic or Kante. This was the first prolonged slump of the lampard era. Both of us watched our champion's league campaign and saw the beautiful football lampard delivered despite Injuries to some key player's. This same injuries to some of our key players eventually exposed some weaknesses.

The key question is, why will a board hire an inexperienced rookie to manage a big club like chelsea??
The logic of his appointment was that "chelsea wanted an identity". We wanted a manager who was one of us and who also will play attacking football, ingratiate our youth player's into the first team and compete at the top. We wanted to copy barcelona's model which has lasted for 15 years.
The management board said they wanted to depart from short-terminism and promised to give lampard 3 year's to carry out this mission. They wanted to follow in the footsteps of liverpool and mancity.

Now, I see people have already started falling in love with Tuchel.
Of course, it's understandable. We would want to gravitate towards the new manager and hope for the best. We would want to highlight his best sides and be willfully blind to his weaknesses.

Then when he starts enjoying his honeymoon period and the team is playing exceptionally well and getting good results against the top sides and probably win a trophy or go to a final, we would meanwhile choose to be blind to our weaknesses and set an exceptionally high expectation for the team and the minute the honeymoon wears off and the weaknesses start exposing themselves, we become reactionary and start hating the coach eventually culminating in his sack and then we start the cycle again.

By using 60m that should have been used to buy VVD, an Epl-tested defender, to buy a Rudiger and Zapacosta or '2 for #5' average players that wouldn't upgrade the team?

Lukaku was suitable for Conte's style and the difference in fees between him and Morata was negligible, for any smart football person to see.
