Obasanjo was a lieutenant general, but he was promoted to the rank of general in April 1978.

The following people were 4 star generals when they were head of state/president.

Yakubu Gowon, Murtala Muhammed, Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida, Sani Abacha (Abacha became a 4-star general before he became head of state) and Abdulsalam Abubakar.


Since 1999 the chief of defence staff has always been a 4-star general.

Other people that became 4-star generals or equivalent, but did not become head of state were Domkat Bali and Augustus Aikhomu.


The rank of field marshal (5-star) is not used, but it is assumed that the president and commander in chief is a 5-star general and so he wears the rank of field marshal, admiral of the fleet or marshal of the air force when he wears a military uniform.

Remembered Obasanjo's late ADC from 1999..Dude never ever laughed no matter the type of jokes Obasanjo ever cracked..used to look at him behind OBJ and wondered the type of military training he had..No laugh,No smiles. Just there.A towering figure behind the President.

Subsequent ones in latter administration did not carry the kind of aura or charisma he had..There was something about him that was very noticeable by discerning minds..No wonder Obasanjo choose him

they have dey codes but they military must always give a nod. In the US the military top dogs also have codes of nuclear in which after dey have deliberated on using the Arsenal in which the president will assent by inputting his codes b4 the military after confirmation can authorize it

Within a year how?

He was not promoted when he became ADC. He had already been a lieutenant colonel for some time before he became ADC in 2015. He was promoted to colonel in December 2016.

Where did I say that Abacha was not the first person to become a 4-star general without skipping any rank? In actual fact I did a thread about that same issue last year or two years ago.


Obasanjo was a brigadier when Murtala became head of state. He was promoted to lieutenant general, skipping the rank of major general.

Do you know why Olonisakin, the immediate past CDS was a Lt. General and never promoted to (a 4star) General? Was it more of political than the regimental oversight?

Buhari is referred to as Maj. General, do you know of any reason why he didn't promote himself to a full General (I mean, since he was the HOS)?
