Why There Are Many Northerners In The Nigerian Army by Nobody: 11:38am On Feb 01, 2021
Before the Nigerian Army became what is it today, it was formally called The Royal West African Frontier Force. This force was created by the British Colonial Office in 1900 to garrison the West African colonies of Nigeria, Gold Coast, Sierra Leone and Gambia. In 1928, it received royal recognition, becoming the Royal West African Frontier Force (RWAFF).

Out of the Royal West African Force came the Northern and Southern Nigeria Regiment which eventually became the Nigerian Army.

After Nigeria got independence, the new Nigerian Army was open for all, applications were sent far and wide but guess what happened, many southerner politicians persuaded their people not to join the army, only the stubborn southerners joined. At the end of the day, northern applicants were more than southern applicants, because of the disparities in the number of applications between the North and the south, lot of public awareness about the Nigerian army were advertised on the radio, tv and newspaper, infact, army recruiters were sent to many southern villages and town but they all declined to join.

At the end of the day, many Northerners were recruited in the army leaving the south with very few soldiers. Because of lack of foresight from the southern politicians, they all missed the train.

Till today, southerners are still suffering from the effect of their lack of participation in the Nigerian army...this same effect is also seen in the Nigerian navy, airforce and police.

The lack of foresight from southern politicians will lead to the destruction of the south, presently, the south is experiencing a brain drain, at the end of the day, the north will get all those opportunities which brain drains took away.

But in terms of foot soldiers, the middle belt had more soldiers than others. Let's wait for others to shed more light on that.

At the end of the day, the lack of foresight will eventually lead to the lack of opportunities for your people.

Army was used by colonial government to enforce draconian rule and anti indigene policies. What Army is doing today, enforcing arewa agenda is a legacy of colonial rule. It had no honor then, still has no honor today. Which proud parent would send their son to join such army? Don't blame southern leaders and parents for protesting the enrollment. It was the right thing to do.

I think the first military coup by Nzeogwu and co killing the Northern elite is the major factor.

Stop spreading lies.

Even before the almagamation of Nigeria, the various tribes did had their own army that enforced law and orders and also fight off invading forces.

This same logic also applies to Nigeria.

You are still applying the same lack of foresight by your politicians to the debate.

As we say THE END JUSTIFY THE MEANS....no matter what you think, the end is what matters.

Influence is everything, the person with the most influence will control the situation, if there are 5 southern s and 4 Northerners in the army , the 5 southerners will influence any situation in the army.

You guts can keep complaining while northern strategists with lot of foresight win the day.
Re: Why There Are Many Northerners In The Nigerian Army by Aderr: 12:07pm On Feb 01, 2021
This piece is ignorant. At independence the South had more commissioned officers than the north, with igbos taking the lion share.
The criteria for joining the army was later watered down for northerners so that illiterates like Buhari can also become commissioned officers. grin

But in terms of foot soldiers, the middle belt had more soldiers than others. Let's wait for others to shed more light on that.

One sided story.

There was a war and in war people die...no war is peaceful.

The igbo people did had their army to defend their people and they also committed lot of atrocities in asaba and port harcourt.

Now if you join the terrorist group ESN, isnt it also the easier way to die?

Do you think the army is boyscout?

Actually, the southerners were more educated in western civilization than the northerners therefore the southerners were reluctant to join the army at lower cadre. Also the exposition gained in WW2 by southerners informed their siblings not to join the army. However the southerners, specifically the Igbo, dominated the officer's cadre of Nigerian army as of 1966. The northerners used the opportunity created by Nigeria\Biafra war to dominate the Nigerian army both officer's cadre and other ranks. The bolded is very Nigerian in articulation, lack of intellect.

There was a coup first against the north before the supposed domination. If there was no coup, there won't be any domination.

The reason most Southerners are joining the military today is due to lack of jobs, even with the last recruitment northerners turn out was very high compared to Southerners.
Southerner youth will write jamb 3-4 times before giving up, while a Northerner will just pass ssce and apply once.

The coup has nothing to do with domination. The northerners played the Yoruba and other Nigerian minorities who joined to fight Biafra. Northerners were mostly find in one of the divisions of Nigerian army during Nigeria\Biafra war. Why the southerners were busy fighting fellow southerners in Biafrans, the northerners were busy stuffing NDA and military positions with northerners. When the war ended, the northerners in various position of the government and armed forces of Nigeria instituted QUOTA SYSTEM which gave the undue advantage on numerical strength to the north. If the intake for NDA was left without QUOTA SYSTEM, Ndigbo would have overtaken them.

The northern elites in government introduced the QUOTA SYSTEM and a debased standard for NDA intakes for northerners. The two are political strategies the north would not have allowed if the reverse was the case. The north knew there are many turncoats in southern Nigeria.

So you mean the Northerners are smarter than the igbos and yorubas, if they could play them a fast game.

But i wonder, why you are trying to omit the first coup that was organized by an igbo man who wanted domination.

Before the biafra war, there was a coup that killed lot of northern officers and leaders which eventually lead to a revenge.

The quota systems was created by the British not Northerners.

Please read well before making silly comments. Northerners are not half smart as Igbo or Yoruba. Northerners did not play Ndigbo instead they cunningly convinced Yoruba and other southern minorities to join in a fight against Ndigbo and Biafrans. If the Yoruba and other southern minorities did join the northern region against the Biafrans, the war would not have last for six months.

Please ask you dad and his two senior brothers how they joined? Even the recruitment of other ranks is strictly on quota system. Now, NDA is a closed door to Ndigbo. During my intake, it was still a hell for any Igbo boy to pass through selection board. This single action forced most Igbo chaps to change their surnames.
