9jakool:Bia, Nwoke- of what socio-political or economic value is Nigeria to the US right now? of what strategic importance is Nigeria to the US ? We have a common language in Nigeria which is Queens English and Pidgin English- No American has visited Nigeria and had difficulty communicating with a Nigerian in Nigeria, even the most illiterate yoruba person can at least speak pidgin English today. Is there oil in the north? what will Americans be looking for in Northern Nigeria? Ordinary to help us fight insurgency, they came and left abruptly. As unsafe as Nigeria is right now, as economically leprous as Nigeria is right now- of what value is this sudden requisition to the US nation for yoruba and hausa teachers? This is not Mandarin, Russian or even Swahili (which is spoken in almost 10 African countries) we are talking about here - this is yoruba and hausa language and culture. While I applaud the move for people to come have a shot at living the dream using this avenue, but let’s look at the bigger picture and understand this is not about learning any language or culture. It is an attempt to increase migration maybe when the people get here, they will be retrained to work in nursing homes (if they want to remain in the US) after their so called short teaching program expires. Something is just not clear about this policy, ONLY TIME WILL TELL. It’s a positive move to offer travel opportunities but let’s call it what it is - that’s all |

jaxxy:Exactly the point, it looks like a policy hurriedly put together to ferry away some tens of thousands of Nigerians to the US on some weak proposition of scholastic importance. The Igbo language is of more importance in the US than the hausa language judging by the population of Igbos in the US. Yorubas and Igbos dominate the Nigerian immigrant community in the US and it is very illogical to leave out Igbo teachers in the scheme- there is more to what meets the eye in this matter |

NwaNimo1:Nigeria's profile as a major international player and its visibility on the world stage have jumped dramatically in recent years. As a result, government (and industry) have a greater interest in gathering intelligence, trade, partnership, and etc. Knowing the languages is a part of that. There's also the issue of extremism. Knowing the languages is part of fighting that as well. |

Why do people see this as a new thing? It's been on for decades now. I heard of it first in 2009 but there was age restriction then. It has been there for long only publicity makes it new this year. It's part of their plan to extend their tentacles. They want extension of their culture across the globe. The languages are selected all over the world. It is not only Hausa and Yoruba. We have other Countries. |

GeneralPula:So you're saying Yoruba is native to Brazil? |
| Re: Yoruba, Hausa Teachers Needed In The US by Uchasa(m): 1:55pm On Feb 03, 2021 |
GeneralPula:Igbo is native only to Nigeria? LMAO. It seems you know nothing about Nigeria. So Yoruba is native to Brazil and other countries and Igbos are native to only Nigeria? Yet, the slaves taken from the bight of Benin and Biafra account for 1/3 of all slaves taken from Africa to the Carribea and North America. Do you know that most Blacks from Mid-Western USA and Eastern USA have Igbo roots? Do you know that Igbo as well as Yoruba were among the fastest growing African Languages in the United States as at last year? Do you know that Igbo is taught under African Culture Studies in most US Universities and Ivy Leagues?. Igbo not being choosed is something peculiar to them not something you think. Only them have their reason |

1914 is the root cause of everything going on. I dont ever pray there is another Lord Lugard again. The British did so much harm to unify these tribes together. But what do we do? As for me and my household we are Nigerians. I am Nigerian. Naija for life. 9ja! States of origin in our database should be abolished, and states of residence adopted. The rubbish about tribes should be eradicated. And if cultures and traditions will have to be flushed out to forget tribes, so be it. All the so called kings, obi, oba, emirs should be erased cos they arent helping matters at all. I am pro Nigeria. All tribes should be erased. I will NEVER say I am this tribe first. I will always be Nigerian first. 9ja for life! |

ogbonti:I get your point that there are more Yoruba and Igbo speakers in America than Hausa speakers, but that's really not the point. You really think these American students are learning Hausa and Yoruba to speak to the average Nigerian in the diaspora or communicate with Nigerians in Africa? That would be laughable! The answer is that language is a gateway to learning about the culture of a people. For example, you cannot learn Yoruba without understanding the culture. It's the same way many Westerners are intrigued by Ifa. It's sad that Westerners value investing in history and humanities of Africa more than Africans. If I read an academic piece on the history or culture of Nigeria, 75% of the time it's written by a Western scholar or an African trained in the West. How much money does the Nigerian government spend on academic institutions, research, history, archeology, museums or cultural preservation? The Americans are learning for fascination and interest rather than for translation purposes. You cannot blame them for wanting to learn about other people. It's unfortunate that America is stealing the talents from Nigeria as you put it, but honestly that's the fault of the Nigerian government not the Americans. |
