No fewer than seven Fulani herders were killed in two separate attacks in Maiyanga village of Kwall District in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The state Chairman of Miyyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Malam Nura Abdullahi, on Thursday, confirmed the incident to Daily Trust in Jos, explaining that the recent attack which occurred on Tuesday had claimed five lives and one other missing while more than a hundred cows were killed and some macheted by the assailants.

He further recalled that the first attack took place on Tuesday last week where two herders were allegedly shot dead.


He said all the attacks occurred in the same Maiyanga village and both the police and personnel of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) were informed of the incident.

When contacted, the OPSH’s spokesman, Major Shittu Ibrahim, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation was ongoing to get the perpetrators arrested.

The Chairman narrated that “After the first attack on Tuesday, last week, two herders rearing their cows were suddenly attacked and killed in the area. We reported the case to OPSH and appealed to the leadership of MACBAN to exercise restrain while the investigation was going on to arrest the perpetrators of the act.

” To our surprise, on Tuesday this week, five herders were attacked and killed in the same area. More than a hundred cows were killed and macheted. They were going about their normal rearing when assailants attacked and killed them. There was no farm activity at the moment in the area because the area is rocky. There is no justification for this attack as the area has been peaceful in recent time, ” he added.

According to the chairman, the bodies of the victims had been recovered with the support of both the OPSH and police and have been handed over to them for burial.

Daily Trust reports that for the past four months, there have not been attacks or violence in the state until Tuesday when the incident occurred.

Yes .. I concur with you.. but the root mechanism to making your above solution sustainable still lies in the core of investment.

If you ban this herdsmen, what alternative are you recommending that will not involve money? Or you just want them to go back to the north where open grazing is not feasible cos of the desert encroachment. You re only pushing them to the wall.

I will NEVER support open grazing, but I also know that the solution lies not in the hands of the government of empty promises or making noises that open grazing is been outcasted. They have nothing more to offer.

I am saying the solution lies with folks with deep pockets, those that can turn problem into an opportunity goldmine..
