For the most part of the latter 1800’s Ibadan was the defato capital of Yorubaland. It was the first city to successfully annex all the regional powers under one central government (the argument that Oyo held such status prior was false). Anywhere in Yorubaland at the time, before a new king ascended the throne, he had to consult with the chiefs at Ibadan and seek their approval.

This included the ancient cradle city of Ife… Oni Orayegba Ojaja for example was imposed on Ife by Ibadan. In other parts like Ekiti, Ibadan had its Ajeles.

The only exception was Ijebu…. Being a strategic port city, it had an advantage of waging both physical and economic war. For the most parts, the nobility at Ibadan was just and very protective. They ensured that no invasion from the North infiltrated Yorubaland.

However, the Ajeles they appointed were not as noble…. Their excesses for example incited the revolt at Ekiti led by Fabunmi.

Owa Agunlejika of Ilesha died in 1870. Two popular princes vied for the throne after him….. Prince Odigbadigba and Prince Oweweniye.

They both had tremendous support among the people…. There however was a very powerful warlord at the time who had preference for Odigbadigba. His name was Ogedengbe.

Knowing fully well that no ruler can ascend the throne in most parts of Yorubaland without the approval of Ibadan, he sent gifts to the chiefs to persuade them to accept his candidate. His contact link to the chiefs was Balogun Ayobo.

The gifts sent to him included beads, slaves, clothes and cowrie shells.

The normal practice was for Balogun Ajobo to distribute the gifts with the other chiefs and lobby for Ogedemgbe’s candidate.

He however kept all the gifts for himself and sanctioned the crowning of Odigbadugba…. When other powerful chiefs of Ibadan heard of this, they were greatly offended.

Immediately, Odigbadigba’s legitimacy to the throne was nullified and both candidates were summoned to Ibadan for questioning…. The chiefs decided that Ogedengbe’s candidate was not ideal.

Ogedengbe trained to be a soldier at Ibadan in the private militia of Bashorun Ogunmola…. He commited an act of treason when he deserted Ibadan to fight for Ijesha in some earlier campaign and Ogunola ordered his execution….

But for the intervention of Latosa ( who would later become bale of Ibadan himself)… he would have been executed…. The oracle however told Ogunmola that the man he pardoned would one day rise to be a great thorn in Ibadan’s flesh…

This made his presence at Ibadan very risky and he escaped back to Ilesha. Based on this sentiment, Ibadan chiefs rejected his candidate and endorsed Oweweniye. On their way back to Ilesha, Ibadan chiefs organized a setup attack on Odigbadigba and he was murdered by his escorts…. Balogun Ayobo, the Ibadan chief that caused the confusion was stripped of his titles and ordered to commit suicide.

Ogedengbe did not take lighly that his candidate was rejected and disgraced by Ibadan. In protest, he laid a siege on Ilesha and deposed all the chiefs that supported Oweweniye. His powers grew so strong and got the Owa uncomfortable…

Ibadan took his open defiance as an act of rebellion and responded in kind…. A powerful warlord by the name Ajayi Ogboriefon was dispatched in 1872 to restore peace in Ilesha and bring back Ogedengbe as a war captive.

Ogedengbe knew he stood no chance in an open battle against the defato powerbase of Yorubaland… he resorted to guerilla battle. Ibadan warriors did not know the terrains and jungles as he did. He marched his army out of the city and camped in the jungles close to Idi Iroko.

When Ibadan army got to Ilesha, they did not find him. They tracked him through the jungles but could not keep up… He cleverly moved far into the jungles close to Ikere at a place called Igbo Alawun.

From here, he used his knowledge of the jungle to launch hit and run attacks on Ibadan warriors . His tactics was usually ambush attacks. Since Ibadan people did not know the terrain, they could never predict where the ambush would come from.

Ogboriefon returned to Ibadan in defeat and was called to give a report in the presence of the Bale…. He wept like a kid as he gave his account, the shame of coming back home defeated in battle was quite unbearable for the legendary warrior.

This is one of the many events of history that fits a popular Yoruba proverb which says ‘moja mosa la fin mo akinkanju loju ogun’

Who are the true leaders of Yoruba people because it's definitely not Tinubu.

That one is busy minding his 2023 business why his kinsmen are been raped and slaughtered like cows on yoruba soil .

Sad

The problem with us Yoruba people is that we talk too much and no action

They used and dumped Afonja in the 1800's.... used and dumped Solagberu in the 1800's...used and dump Awolowo in the 80's...used and dumped Abiola in the early 1980's and 1990's.... Used and dumped Ekweme in the mid 1980's and late 1990's.... Used and dumped Zik in the early 1960's...

What makes the landlord of Lagos to think that his situation will be different?
He is fooled by Buhari's meek attitude and favors towards him... Just as Afonja was fooled by Alimi's pius meekness... and the Hausa people were fooled by Usman Dan Fodio's holy traits as he embarked on a tribal jihad and Zik was fooled by the Sadaurna who ended up disgracing NCNC for Akintola with plans to remove him from office and replace him with a Yoruba prince, Justice Adetokunbo Ademola.....

same way MKO was fooled by Shagari's meekness when he was promised presidential ticket after one term in office for Shagari.... Same way MKO was fooled by Abacha...same way Awolowo was fooled by Gowon after the civil war...

The Fulani meekness... feigning of ignorance that made Ironsi trust them with his security details.... while gradually, all the boys around him were replaced with loyalists sworn to the Northern agenda....

same way Alimi had all the security details around Afonja replaced, shortly before they launched a palace coup on him.... after the spies reported his attempt to send message to Onikoyi for military help and Alimi had the message intercepted.

Tinubu is silent while his people are being killed. Where will he run to after they eventually isolate him to destroy him like they did many of his predecessors that walked in his path?

The sole reason they desperately want to remain in Yorubaland in strategic postions of aggression is to wreck psychological warfare that would keep everyone silent after they play their joker in 2023. This is a blue print of Fulani history since their days from Futa Jalon.

The Yorubas will say a dog that doesn't heed the whistle of his Master is going to get lost.

They say a word is enough for the wise.

Nice write up.

However, I will like to correct some notions.

1. Why was Oyo an empire if the arguement was false?

2. Ibadan was under the command of Alaafin Atiba.

3. Ibadan didn't subjugate or annex everywhere in Yorubaland.
