This is why I don't swim.

Babes and guys with gonorrhea will jump into the pool, others will pee, some will mess, body odoured guys and girls will wash their underarms and under-thighs inside, people with scabies, measles, fugal infection of sorts will swim.

And some will still somehow drink the water.

God is great!

some go mess inside grin grin grin

To be sincere black, I am surprised you are taking something that disgusting as a joke. Also claiming you are a slob... I know that it could feel different if it was someone else that peed or released semen/menstrual blood in a pool you were swimming in, but since you are the one that did it you don't feel like you did anything wrong.

Very disgusting. It's not just disgusting that you did it, but also that you don't find anything wrong in it because you shouldn't be expected to walk to the bathroom everytime to ease yourself.

Hello, guys, it's your favorite health blogger, Paul Samuel FitnessDoctor

Thinking about taking a dip into a public pool to cool off, well think again. Many public pools are crawling with germs -- and, if not treated properly, can pose a major health risk.

Before heading to the pool at any time, find out what could be lurking in the water -- and learn how to protect yourself and your family.

1. 1 in 5 adults pees in the pool

Though it may seem like a habit most people would grow out of after childhood -- or preferably, never pick up in the first place -- many adults admit to relieving themselves while swimming.

In fact, a 2012 survey conducted by the Water Quality & Health Council found that one in five U.S. adults urinates in the pool.

2. There’s probably poop in the pool, too

Copyright: Paul Samuel FitnessDoctor (realfitbody.com)

A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 1 in 8 public pools, hot tubs, and water playgrounds was shut down because of health and safety violations, including excessively dirty water.

The most common cause of contamination: fecal matter that rinses off children or people who go swimming while suffering from diarrhea.

"Contamination can occur via direct release of formed or diarrheal feces or as much as 10 grams of fecal material can rinse off a young child's perianal surface and into the water," the report states.

3. Some bacteria are resistant to chlorine

Chlorine is the major chemical used to kill germs in the pool. When chlorine is added to pool water to kill germs that can cause illness if ingested, it takes time to work.

The chemical eliminates most germs in minutes, but some, such as Cryptosporidium, or "Crypto" for short, can live in properly treated pool water for several days.

4. Most people go swimming without bathing

The 2012 report from Water Quality and Health Council also found that nearly 70 percent of people do not shower before taking a swim in the pool -- adding to the number of germs in the water.

"Swimming is not a substitute for bathing. Too many people unknowingly treat the pool as a communal bathtub," Wiant said in the release. "It may seem counter-intuitive, but it's important to shower before you jump in the pool to help keep swimming healthy for everyone in the pool.

So there you have it.

The problem with pools in Nigeria is maintaining the water chemistry and the mechanical equipment.

The first and obvious problem in most outdoor pools are people/so called experts using chlorine; the right chemical agent to use for outdoor (open to sunlight) pools are bromine. Sunlight kills the effectiveness of chlorine but bromine is effective under sunlight. Then other checks that I am not willing to get into right now. But bromine usage will help in alleviating the bacteria that could be in an outdoor pool.

You should say this only applies to untreated swimming pools, whether public or private any untreated pool is not safe for use. Should you now say because the unwashed fruit we eat has germs so we should stop eating fruits.

In as much as I 'sometimes' read your post you are beginning to post trash, is this because you crave attention? do proper research before posting trash on Nairaland...I blame the moderator that push this trash to front page.

As a 'self acclaimed fitness doctor' (who dash monkey) you should know that swimming is the best form of exercise, you can ask your doctor in case you are not aware of this...so, stop discouraging people from swimming with your misleading information.

Reminds me of my first swimming experience, I was in primary school, we went on an excursion in school, that was how I entered the pool and began drinking d water as if it was my hobby, during the lunch break two gals sat beside me, one told the other "I PISSED INSIDE THE WATER "..... On hearing that I almost fainted,i didn't go near the water after the break, and I didn't go to school for over a week cause I was seriously sick...twas a horrible experience

Not that I didn't think all these things were possible, but I just hoped Chlorine solves every problem just like "Dettol".

Calm down please and see me as a good friend who is trying to pass important information no matter how stupid it may sound.

First of all, it doesn't only apply to untreated swimming pools because people would still pee, release semen or any kind of bodily fluids in treated pools, like the one in the picture.

This article is simply to enlighten the over 47,000 people who viewed it that the swimming pool is not as safe as you see it.

If you choose not to swim in public pools and turn to private pools because of your health, it is your choice. If you choose to still continue swim in public pools and put your health at risk, it is your choice.

There are hundreds of exercise that are better than swimming e.g dancing (which most of us do). It is almost the same with swimming since it works all your body parts, makes you more flexible and is a great fat burner just like swimming.

I believe you can ask your doctor about that.

And talking about the best form of exercise, visit this link: https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/5-of-the-best-exercises-you-can-ever-do

According to Harvard, Swimming is listed as Number one out of five best exercises excluding dancing, but according to you "Dancing" is better than swimming...you can now see that you are such an ignorant "Fitness Doctor".

Do yourself a favor by reading books and conducting a research before posting TRASH on Nairaland.

I will never insult you back or get angry at you because you are depending on things you see on the internet for information.

These are the same scientists who claimed that potatoes could possibly kill you. Now lets looks at it this way. When a research starts a stuyd there are many protocols that are followed. The most important one is who the people are, possibly their age, occupation, present health, residence, climate conditions, etc. All these are taken into account. So now that study you listed from health.harvard was simply a research which came to conclude on that. It never said that those are the 5 best exercises for life or for 2017, because two years or even two months from now a new research might debunk those claims or add 2 more exercises to it.

I know you didn't check out the benefits of dancing before you decided to school me, so please check it out. There are also benefits of running, jogging, check them out and outline them if you can.

Dancing is much more fun than swimming, it is easier, we can go for longer periods dancing than swimming and so much more. Now when I said this I was thinking about everyone in general, but you amebo, you are only thinking about yourself. Because you love swimming so much and you don't care about other people who prefer jogging and running. Just because you prefer swimming. I Fitness Doctor consider a great exercise to be one that is easily accessible (you can dance anywhere), easily to perform (you can learn how to dance easilly) a great fat burner, works the entire body, helps you connects socially (dance classes), helps mentally (by making you release antidepressants, which is one reason I tell my reader to jog whenever they are feeling depressed or frustrated). Now compare these to swimming and tell me if it is easily accessible here in Nigeria for the entire populace (remember you pay to swim).

Did you read that that article on Harvard was based on? What made them draw their conclusions on these exercises. Was it because of the long-term benefits, because it says that swimming works your entire body just like dancing. WAs it because of the fact that it is a great fat burner. Was it because it was an exercise you can use to start your day (I don't think you own a pool amebo)

I am not arguing with you actually. Swimming can be the best exercise for you, but to others it might be jogging, skiing or skydiving. To others it might be lying on the couch every day or skipping, and when you talk to them, they simply tell you that it works wonders for them compared to everything else.

Not everyone in that viewed agreed with me of course, but please read through the comments, some people listed their experiences saying that they overheard discussions of people who peed in the pool they both swam together. A lady and a guy also said they used to do it back then. Swimming might be the best, but what is a good exercise if it gives you a new load of germs? Ask yourself and please read the comments on this thread.

Remember, it was the same scientists who said potatoes could kill you, that was not based on Africans, infact every American research is conducted with Americans and we know that everything from climate to lifespan to diseases to economic conditions is completely different so we cannot completely rely on that. Expect you have studied swimming and know how much calories you burn in long term and short term under the African heat.

But still I never said that you shouldn't swim.

Thanks for this debate

I feel good about that fact that I’m not the only one concerned about that. I feel like I have to make sure everyone here is at least mindful of the fact that you are continually exposing yourself to a reasonably high-risk level. The reason why I'm saying this is that any pool is a source of bacteria and all other kinds of problems if it's not clean and if all the sanitary standards are not met. You can learn more about this here how to shock a pool. This pH issue can also cause harm to your skin. I'm just suggesting that if you go swimming very often, just make sure you don't expose yourself to those risks.
