The deplorable state of Calabar-Itu road has claimed 9 lives after a commercial bus belonging to AbiTrans Company somersaulted several times at the bad spot of the road.

Eyewitnesses said the vehicle was conveying passengers from Cross River to Akwa Ibom state before it crashed.

“It was a Toyota Hiace belonging to AbiTrans Company. The driver was over speeding when he lost control and somersaulted several times. I don’t know where he is running to, knowing fully well that the road is bad”, a road user who travelled from Uyo down to Calabar said.

Meanwhile, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cross River Sector Command, Cyprian Ofordu confirmed that 9 persons died in the vehicle which was conveying 12 people.

Ofordu said 9 died on the spot while 3 others were severely injured and have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

According to him the AbiTrans bus with 12 passengers ran into a MACK truck and after the driver lost control.

He said: “The three persons rescued are in a critical condition as we (FRSC) were called in to rescue but what we saw at the crash site was bad.

“Those involved were three female adults and 9 male, but the 9 persons who died have been deposited at the mortuary including two females and 7 male. If there are further development, we will keep you abreast”, Ofordu said.
