Can you guys buy wire and ask to be connected to a different line and
your landlord on another line? Don't wait for 'nepa' to come to the
house, go to their office and discuss a way out with them.

@ op Honestly you are the cause of the problem .

In Abuja one of the things you must watch out for is;

Make sure there is NO pending or outstanding utility bill to be paid

Make sure you don't believe landlord or agent saying it will be fix as soon as possible ( it may takes years bro)

Even if you tell him to give you your balance that you are moving out, Abuja landlord will NOT

WICKED SET OF PEOPLE

All of you should move out make only the landlord live for the entire house.

and from what I heard he was the one who kept refusing to pay the bills whenever it was given to him by past tenants and hence it accumulated.

If what you stated above is true then, I will suggest you people call a meeting, including the landlord. He will tell you people when he will clear the bill in the shortest period of time and install meter as well.

If he comes up that his usual ranting, tell him that you people will offset the bill and install a meter and then the total amount will shared among the tenants and it will be deducted from the rent amount every tenant will pay for the following year.

He will fix because he wouldn't want his rent money to be reduced from what it's supposed to be

But ensure all your tenants except the landlord knows this suggestion and is in agreement before you call for the meeting.

I stay in Abuja too, and I don't think your landlord is a weirdo more than mine. But this suggestion worked for us. The werey man didn't only install meter when we gave him the heat, he also dug a borehole. So far we've been enjoying our life

My brother he is the landlord o. We don't have any issue with doing what you said but the guy is stark illetratre. Several attempts have been made in regard to what you suggested even last month that the PHCN official came around, he suggested same to him but the guy opposed them as usual and was just shouting. Truth is he doesn't want to spend a dime in rectifying the issue. He wants us to handle it all alone. The guy is fraudulent and crooked in nature. I am Igbo by tribe and the guy is also Igbo. Before now I didn't know why people so much dislike my tribe until I met this guy that was when I understood. I say this with great shame. There are other things he has done which contradicts the agreements we had before I moved in but I don't want to state them here to avoid the post being lengthy.
then its shocking his landlord business is still up and running .normally if a landlord has such a behavior you describing then in no short time his houses will be abandoned.how come una landlord still dey fit get tenants shocked

Hi all, I'm sorry I don't know the exact section to post this but hopefully the mods will help in moving it to the right section. Thanks.

I'm gonna go straight to the point.

I moved into this small house in Abuja due to pressure from the people I was staying with before now which required that I moved out quickly from there. After searching for a house to stay in within the shortest possible time, I finally settled for this one I'm staying in right now. I paid fully for the house in the presence of about three witnesses that is to say I am not owing a dime.

As with every house, there are agreements binding the tenants and landlords and some of mine includes Paying of water and light bill. Now the issue is that whenever we pay our light bill, after about a week or two it gets disconnected due to the outstanding balance of about N50,000 which is small compared to what so many people are owing in Nigeria but still have their electricity intact and from what I heard he was the one who kept refusing to pay the bills whenever it was given to him by past tenants and hence it accumulated.

The landlord promised fixing prepaid metre when I was moving in but until now he still hasn't and we the tenants have been suffering dearly for this. Everytime the PHCN guys come around, he fights and insults them and this I believe is the reason they have refused to be linient with us which is what he has been doing to us, the tenants too. At a point I even reported him to the police for subtly threatening me verbally and angrily and he was picked up for questioning and ever since then he started avoiding having any confrontation with me.

Now the issue is that we haven't had electricity for over a month now in our compound while our surrounding neighbors constantly have light in their houses. This has made us suffer greatly. Note that we don't owe light bill. We pay whenever there's a new bill and like I stated before, just after a week or two, we get disconnected again and we go ahead to buy wires, get and pay the person to help reconnect it. This has been going on since I moved in here. I later heard that other tenants suffered same with him. I can't remember the last time I ironed my clothes in my house, charged my phone or even watched TV all because of this guy's cruelty.

I had to resort to getting a generator to enable me get light and enjoy a bit of fan whenever I get back from work. My fridge has been lying dormant as I no longer use it to store cooked food. All these has cost me and is still costing me money. I now buy fuel almost every time, eat out because I can no longer cook and store the food in my fridge. He lives in the compound and doesn't care.

My question is this: what can be done to get us out of this misery this heartless guy has put us into? Please we need all the help we can get. The other two tenants are already overwhelmed with the whole situation. Please we need all the help we can get. Location is Abuja. Thanks.

Your situation demands that you guys really need to get more involved to sort it out.

First, visit the PHCN headquarters in charge. Get to know how much is needed to reconnect you guys. Get the landlord to know about you guys movement and ask him to provide the money. If he doesn't have the money get the police for him to write agreement that if three of you provide the money, it will be deducted from the monthly rent.

My advice, collect your balance and pack out.
If I advise you go pay the bills yourself, what about that of other tenants?
Re: Our Landlord Is Torturing Us by boldx(m): 5:34pm On Feb 27, 2021
I experienced exactly the same thing. Get a prepaid meter asap and tell the NEPA officials at the main office to program the account outstanding balance into the meter account.

What your compound owes, 50k is actually very small. Ours was about N290,000.

For every N2000 you recharge, they take about 25% or so to service your debt and you will enjoy light.

Please get a NEPA meter asap. They said meter i's free but you know Naija nah.

Funny.

I wish you are in Abuja

The best thing is to either ask other neighbors to contribute to offset the bill or just count it as a loss and move out

Single face in Abuja now is around 40,000 sir

The compound is indebted to the tune of 50,000

Which is more economical considering the op isn't that financially bouyant

@bolded no, I don't. I rented the house under duress after having checked a couple of others and no success. I urgently had to move out of where I was staying. I have 6 months to go.
wait for the six months or look for someone that will rent the remaining months from you .. or you guys can collectively as a compound sue the Landord to court , forget police , the court makes the decision by force for the landlord, just contribute as a compound and involve a lawyer ..

The truth is you the tenants have to come together, meet the landlord and inform him that you people don't want him to continue being charge of the bill collection. collect the bill from him, share it with the outstanding to every body, and when you collect the money, make d payment, then u all will start enjoying light. subsequent bills will be collected, shared and paid between yourselves

Bro.... landlords do such because tenants allow them to. Didn't sign up and pay to be there for a certain period of time? So why would you even consider robbing yourself by moving out? That's what he wants to bring in new tenants to collect new payments. That's his game anger you are playing along. Meet with the other tenants.... then the landlord... give him an ultimatum.... if he can't refund you the remaining rent... plus the extra you paid on his debt.... by the second week of March... then he is to extend your lease by 3 months. Let him sign... if not... then you'll do what you have to do. This can be....A. pay Police to deal with him... B...pay soldiers to deal with him.. C.... pay area boys to stone his house... maximum damage.....or..... kick him around a bit as a warning. Be does whatever he does because of no consequences. You need to change that.

Thanks.

Where is the exact location in Abuja ?
