Please I need an experienced information on this issue. My pencil light just developed a fault that is very complex. I noticed that when the car is driven for a long time or if it's parked where it's exposed to direct sun light, the mileage numbers will go off and the gears won't select any more.
I will need to off the car and keep for a long time before it can normalize.

What's the issue and please the possible solution?

Whenever the odometer goess off, does the speedometer work?

Next time drive and see if the speedometer rises at all?

If it doesn't, my novice suggestion is that you check the speedometer, maybe replace it.

Then when the odometer is on, does the speedometer rise??

If it does, does the transmission select well?

If yes, then you have your culprit, a failing speedometer.

Either way, if your speedometer does not rise; odometer on or not, the culprit is the speedometer.

Additionally, you can scan.

Provisional amateur diagnosis: Faulty transmission Speed Sensor.

Run a scan to be sure.

I had similar issue with my 1998 camry, the odometer was blank, speedometer wasn't rising & my issue was transmission hardly shift from first gear to 2nd, d tachometer will nearly get to 5000rpm & sometimes i have to release my leg from throttle b4 it will manage to shift, subsequent gears shift pretty fine.

All i did was replacement of the instrument cluster completely & everything came back normal.

I have had this same issue before..all i did was to change the speed sensor, its in top of d gear. My frnd also had d smae exact issue and the speed sensor was changed..i think its a common camry fault.

I just changed my car tape and the guy that fixed it did not fixed it properly. I was busy going from one mecho to another, from one rewire to another. It wen an electrician use that there guage to connect the tape that the problem stop. I was even advise to get another gear that my transmission has gone bad. If I had seen this thread, it might save me from spending some amount working in the gear

The normal car stereo CD player. I bought another one cos the old one if faulty. So I noticed the car not selecting properly and the odo reading will clear while driving inside the sun or during the day wen the car is hot

do a scan....i bet you will get a P0500 fault code....VSS faulty vehicle speed sensor....for some persons changing the VSS rectified the problem....while some had to change the speedometer cluster. funny enough this only happens during a sunny afternoon

Although all my instrument cluster including speedometer works very fine.

The problem i have is Late Gear shift from. 1 to 2 except i take my leg off the throttle briefly before it shifts. Other gears seems to work pretty fine. Could it be a sensor or my gear is dying?

def not the same problem as the OP ....maybe yours need fuild topup and gearbox servicing

I just scabbed my Lexus today and noticed this issue. The speedometer needle won't rise as I move but the speed of travel shows on my phone via obd diagnostic tool. The gears selects fine and I have P0500. How much is this sensor pls

How did you know it's not the speed sensor oga? Everything I read in google concerning this code points to VSS.

It was the gear Valve body. It wasn't supplying ATF as it should.

The first mistake i made, never leave your gear slipping for long, you will end up changing worn parts more than you bargained for.

Gear repair is cheaper and perfect only if you have a competent Gear mechanic, but if u have an incompetent one, i suggest you change the whole gear because you might end up spending much more than the amount of a new gearbox.

If OP or anyome is still having this issue, i came accross this particular issue few months ago while while tryiing to change a fuse from the fusebox under the hood.

One of my headlight fuse got blown and i was trying to replace it in the fusebox, then i notice my damn rewireb bypassed a particular wire on one of my relays which popped out from wherever it was placed when i opened d fuse box. (Which kind wahala be this na) i tried to insert it in a place i thought it might pop out from but boom, i got a particular relay blown out. Double wahala.

My speedometer stopped working, odometer wont show up, the gear wouldnt select until i depress the small emergency button beside the gear stick ( I don't know what it is called), the gear selection wont even appear on the dashboard. Na so i drive am go meet rewire... He only replaced a particular relay and everything started working.
