On august 10, 1963, Nigeria’s sports enthusiasts and indeed all patriots stood up to applaud the country’s then brightest sports star, Dick Tiger, as he dismantled America’s Gene Fullmer to retain his world middleweight title at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan,Western Nigeria.

It was the biggest day in Nigeria’s boxing history, as Fullmer then had gained notoriety for his four fights against Sugar Ray Robinson, who was the greatest pound-for-pound fighter on earth. But such reputations counted for nothing as Dick Tiger, in front of over 35,000 cheering fans, produced a seven round knock out to effectively confirm his superiority over the American. Before then, both men had met two times, with Tiger winning one and the other ending in a draw.

Great memories...

I remember how nepa took light on round 3 of the fight. Everywhere went into darkness for almost 25minutes before the backup supply was powered on.

Dick Tiger, arguably the most famous and the ! most glamorous boxer to come out of Nigeria in his days with amazing accomplishments is seldom remembered in Nigeria because he stood with his people during a genocide. The Nigerian government has refused to celebrate a boxer celebrated worldwide.. Even before independence, Dick Tiger was already started making names for the country and the continent, winning belts after belts in very tortuous circumstances. Hopefully someday, his contribution to the growth of boxing in particular and sports in general in Africa will be recognized and his name immortalised ..
