You really don't know what is going on!

If you separate the rural farmer from his land, you have created poverty in that community. You have changed people who are self employed and well to do to unemployed people that need handouts!
For example, you pay 100k compensation for the land, in a year, the 100kbis finished. The man instead of farming his land will become a labourer earning minimum wages that can't take care of him and his family. Or he has to leave the village to hustle in town and cities. Whatever the case, you have made him poor! That land he was paid 100k for will normally make him 300k if not more in a year. So when wise communities say no to such investments, be happy for them.
There are many hectares of land that is not occupied, investors should go there and not divest farmers from their lands

Gosh. I guess the land issue must have been a result one family saying they own the land and another family saying same which must have been affecting the company of court case everytime. Why I said this is that, delta people can't be that stupid to chase genuine investors like dangote cos at all at all, dangote go dey pay every duties required of him even if not all. Wish dangote all the very best in their decision anyway.

Modified : just sighted this "It said the dispute in Niger led to a stretched situation that had started accumulating negative returns"

My question is that, how can an already purchased land starts accumulating negative returns during dispute? Need to learn.

If the government doesn't find laws to solve these land dispute issues, fewer and fewer businesses will operate. I've experienced this problem before. It's very disheartening, and makes you want to hands off anything to do with the country. Sometimes, you even have to pay for the same plot of land several times, and still end up having disputes on it. Even the courts seem helpless to settle it where a 'connected' person is involved.

The questions right now is, do you know the meaning of a monopolistic company?

The word of a crooked business man.
Maybe he wanted to acquire the land for free by promising the landowners one dubious benefit and they rightfully refused.

OP, it’s NOT a sugar refinery...
But rather a sugar plantation with a mill.

The land was actually NOT purchased. It was leased to Dangote Sugar by the Niger State government under the Land Use Act, and the Estu Nupe was there (as were other community leaders) when the agreement was signed.

Exactly! I have said it so many times before here on Nairaland...
Many Nigerians would rather own 100% of NOTHING than a little bit of something. People are that small-minded!

The funny thing here is that this is primarily an OUT-GROWER venture. Accordingly, the local farmers would continue to cultivate the land and grow the cane, but are assured of a guaranteed OFF-TAKER in Dangote Sugar. Of course, in addition, Dangote companies often build roads, schools, clinics, roads, and provide electricity for the communities that they are located in (eg, Obajana, Gboko, Ibeshe, etc.).

Bitter petty-minded Nigerians... grin

Dangote Sugar has four other plantations (with mills).
It decided it did not want to be needlessly embroiled in a LAND DISPUTE, so it left.

RUBBISH!

BUA and Flour Mills (GoldenSugar) are all part of this BIP program....
The BIP is open to ALL sugar refiners in Nigeria, to incentivize them to replace imported raw sugar by growing sugar locally.

The land was not purchased, but leased under the Land Use Act. Most important, this is an OUT-GROWER venture and accordingly the local farmers would continue to hold and cultivate the land and grow the cane, but would be assured of a guaranteed OFF-TAKER in Dangote Sugar. Conversely, what’s the point in farmers cultivating products that they cannot be sure of selling or which they would struggle to reliably get to market given poor logistics and infrastructure in Nigeria (and hence why as much as 60% of harvests are lost). Furthermore, Dangote companies often build roads, schools, clinics, roads, and provide electricity for the communities that they are located in (eg, Obajana, Gboko, Ibeshe, etc.). Even if you could argue that the farmers don’t need schools, their kids would need it as the world (and agriculture) evolves beyond subsistence farming and livelihood, and their families would definitely benefit from ante-natal and other medical services.

The reality of course (if we are being honest with ourselves) is that these sorts of protests and disputes are rarely (if ever) led by the poor rural farmers themselves, but almost always by self-interested “leaders” who are often amenable to financial inducement. Frankly glad that the company called their bluff and is moving on (as you rightly noted, there are several other potentially suitable sites for sugar cultivation in Nigeria). This is pretty much reminiscent of what happened in Kwara State, where after the resettled Zimbabwean farmers were effectively chased and hounded out, the ‘disputed’ land has since lain mostly fallow and unused or underutilized.

dangote doesn't have monopoly for sugar market. there are many sugar companies in Nigeria DAT are booming. eg Dogan sugar, family sugar, golden penny etc although dangote is among the top sugar companies but u can't actually say he monopolized the sector

In what way or how were the Zimbabwean farmers hounded? Who hounded them, given that Abdulfatah Ahmed was installed by Saraki and did not do anything Saraki did not want?
Give example please.

Maybe you need to do more research about why they left. What I heard was there was no market for what they were producing (No market for fresh milk, no off taker for fresh milk) and no infrastructure in place to support export.

If local farmer were given supports Saraki gave the foreigners, don't you think the ventures would have been more successful?

If truly Dangote was interested in outgrower scheme for sugarcane, they don't need to lease the land! Do you hear if any issue with Tomato Jos that is doing tomato outgrower scheme in Kaduna?

Is Kaduna in Niger State? What has Kaduna got to this with this particular land dispute?
Do you hear of any issue with Dangote Tomato Paste that is doing outgrower scheme in Kano?

The fact this is the only site out of the FOUR Dangote Sugar sites means the issue is PECULIAR to this site.

Meanwhile, while admittedly I cannot claim to have all of the intimate details of the Zimbabwean farmers debacle, the core of their business remains active and viable in Kwara State, and is in fact the state’s biggest and most visible agricultural venture. Nonetheless, the parts of the initial land grant that was reportedly taken back from them, is currently underutilized and mostly fallow (I guess the political farmers are gone).

Saraki leased them land under the Land Use Act...
Same as would be done for any other commercial agricultural investment (domestic or foreign) in Nigeria.

They took bank loans (banks now own 75% of the holding company) for housing, developing the land, importing livestock and machinery, etc.
Meanwhile, any similarly-placed Nigerian farmer could easily access the facilities of NISRAL, Bank of Agriculture and the Agric Insurance Scheme.
