JeAgro477:
in developed countries where government aids farmers watermelon yields as high as 10 thousand to 12 thousand balls per acre cause farmers are always provided with all it takes to grow watermelon successfully but in nigeria where every man is for himself/herself don't expect this yield as a practical farmer I always plant 3500 to 4500 seeds per acre and I always harvest not less than 2000 to 2500 balls per acre at times it's more than that figure but let's keep it at 2500 balls we all know the prices of watermelon in the market it ranges from 500naira downward depending on the size and season but let's keep it at 150naira for each ball now if you multiply 2500*150=375000 within 65 to 75 days in my next update I will be listing and analyzing the costs of planting watermelon on an acre of land

Bro, please let's talk about groundnut.
Do you use hybrid seeds or local?
How many kilos of seeds do you use per hectare?
And what is your harvest rate per hectare?

the best time to plant watermelon in nigeria using rain is early March to early may depending on your region while late planting using rain is mid August to early September depending on your region planting watermelon by june july and early August is not advisable as too much water will kill it
interesting..tanks

Thanks for this succinct analysis.
Two questions please

1.How did you control your weeds? - Manual, mechanical or chemical control

2. What is the difference between the insecticides you bought at N4,500 each and the imiforce you bought at N400 each? - price differentials appears to be high

Thanks

I sometimes use mechanical methods but in most cases i use chemicals

No cause weekly application of insecticides like magic force chases snakes far away from the farm due to its toxic odour

I use local seeds i usually plant one and a half basin of shelled seeds per hectare and in places like ekiti the yield always ranges from 3 to 4.5 tons per hectare

JeAgro477:
watermelon is planted ten feet apart from each other it requires a lot of space this is because planting too close discourages bigger balls and encourages Downy mildew always put 3 seeds per hole so that even if insects or wild animals destroy some of the seeds some will remain

how about the spacing between the rows or are we supposed to plans them 10×10ft
Re: My Watermelon Farming Experience by JeAgro477(m): 9:26pm On Mar 16, 2021
