Governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State explains why the economic policies of President Buhari must be supported by Nigerians.

Governor Badaru in an interview with DailyTrust newspaper, said: “by 2015, the country’s economy was on life support and was literally handed over to the APC government on a stretcher.”

“If you bother to add up all the billions that were stolen in the name of security and the rot in the oil sector, you will appreciate the fact that these people were not running a government in the last eight years but simply supervising the organized sharing of public funds amongst themselves.

“It is actually a miracle that the Buhari administration has been able to come this far without a complete collapse of the economy and the government, such as we are seeing in Venezuela, which had the same toxic combination of a collapsing mono economy and an uncaring administration”.

He said he has believed that the federal government led by President Muhamamdu Buhari has done remarkably well considering the situation we found ourselves after May 29th 2015 swearing day.

“People tend to forget that the economic downturn actually started manifesting in 2014, due to a growing mismatch between the profligate and reckless spending by the previous government, fueled by high oil prices and the resultant shock to the system when prices started to fall. Nigeria’s case was worsened by the fact that with the falling oil prices, our production targets were affected by militant activities in the Niger Delta and outright theft of the nation’s crude oil on a massive scale, perpetrated with the full backing of government officials.

Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, on Tuesday took on former President Olusegun Obasanjo, over his sweeping statement that all members of the National Assembly were corrupt.

The former president also reportedly dismissed members of the National Assembly as lacking in integrity.

Na’Allah in a statement entitled: “I am not corrupt and I have integrity,” dared Obasanjo to prove a single act of corruption against him.

The Kebbi South lawmaker reminded Obasanjo that he rejected his “N50 million inducement to subvert the Constitution and provide a constitutional framework for the third term ambition of the ex- president.”

Na’Allah insisted that he was prepared to vacate his seat as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria if Obasanjo could prove a single record of corruption against him.

He said, “My attention has been drawn to a purported statement attributed to former president Olusegun Obasanjo where he made a sweeping statement that there are no men of integrity in the National Assembly.

“I am respectfully taking exception to the statement which I express the hope is not true.

“To start with, it is not in my character to join issues with elder statement who have had the privilege of superintending over the affairs of our great country Nigeria.

“This exception has become necessary in view of the enormity of the alleged statement to my person and integrity.

“If former president Obasanjo can come out with one proven record of corruption against me as a person I promised to vacate my seat as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“For the records I was the only member from Kebbi State who did not find it worthy at that time to collect the sum of N50 million as an inducement to subvert the Constitution and provide a constitutional framework for the third term ambition of president Obasanjo.

“I find this statement if it is true to be reckless and terrifying. The implication of the statement is to say that the entire over 170 million Nigerians have not elected a single person with integrity among the 469 members of the National Assembly.

“This is definitely rhapsodic and does not conform to commonsense and reason.”

According to him, Dino Melaye’s unruly behavior has dented the image of the hallowed chambers.

“I am very sad about what is going on in the Senate. All former senators and members of the House of Representatives should be sad,” he said. “Senator Dino Melaye is rude to a woman of substance and a diligent senator who has brought pride to the party, her constituency and the womenfolk. He should be suspended from the Senate with immediate effect.”

Nigerian Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has stated that anyone found guilty by the current anti corruption war should be jailed.

“There is only one way for corrupt people; it ends in the prison. It ends in Ibara or Oba (prisons in Abeokuta) or Kirikiri(Lagos prison),” he said.

Others are Zimbabwe $5.4 million, Niger $5.3 million and Mozambique $4.4 million.

Investigation by Vanguard revealed that the demand for generators is being driven by long years of epileptic power supply to industries and homes despite the privatisation of parts of the country’s electricity industry.

Femi Falana, a senior advocate of Nigeria on Sunday, July 11, 2016, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, the chief of army staff for the ownership of corrupt $1.5 Dubai properties in the event that Buratai refuses to resign over the scandal.

Mr. Falana insisted that the explanation offered by the Nigerian Army authorities on how Buratai paid for the properties, was laughable and went on to tag such explanation as a “cock and bull story.”

The Army had explained, through a statement on Friday, June 24, 2016, that General Buratai acquired the properties with his personal savings.

The lawyer regretted that the Nigerian Army had been “illegally” used to ‎defend Buratai in his wrongdoings. He berated the army’s involvement in defending the army chief, noting that such act sets a bad moral precedence, and therefore called on President Buhari to do “the needful”.

“If the chief of Army staff does not deem it fit to resign forthwith, President Buhari should not hesitate to remove him in the interest of national morality,” Falana said.

Falana wondered how an army general could own property worth as much as $1.5m in a foreign country and also called on the Code of Conduct Bureau to open an investigation on Buratai.

‎“In view of the ban on the opening and operation of foreign accounts by public officers, the Code of Conduct Bureau should be involved in the investigation.” He added.

Mr Falana was also quoted to have said that since the Buhari administration had assured Nigerians that there would be no sacred cow in the fight against corruption, Buratai should resign and allow a full scale and transparent investigation by the Arms Procurement Panel and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
