Before continuing, please note that history is brutal, so please do not be bitter.

The first man to discover the people now known as Igbos, but then known as Eboes or Ibos, was Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther. Before Crowther, the only known references to Igbos were as slaves to the Kalabari Ijaws, Binis, and Itsekiri.

I am not saying that that is a good thing. The enslavement and trade of persons of Igbo origin by my people and other coastal ethnicities was wrong. I apologise on behalf of my ancestors. But it is still history.

In his first book about the Igbos, 'Journal of an Expedition up the Niger,' Bishop Crowther described our brothers as only clothed in loin clothes. They did not have headgear like the current Okpu Agu.

And then again, if you read the journals of Macgregor Laird, you will find that British, Scottish and Irish sailors, missionaries and colonialists always wore the head warmer, or beanie, as they crossed the Atlantic from the cold climate of Europe to the warmer weather of West Africa.

When they arrived here, they either discarded their head warmers or sold them to primitive natives.

Now, consider our weather. Does it make sense for you to wear a woollen headgear in West African weather?

Also, wool was not known to the Igbos until after colonialism, and the Okpu Agu is not made out of cotton. It is fabricated from either real or synthetic wool.

Wool comes from the fleece of sheep. Before colonialism, did the Igbo have sheep? Even today, do the Igbos rear sheep?

For the sake of argument, let's agree that it is possible they had sheep. How would they fleece the sheep, seeing as metal cutting materials, such as razors or shearers, were unknown to them before colonialism?

Finally, the earliest known photos of the Igbo people were taken by the British anthropologist Northcote Thomas.

In none of Mr Thomas's photos from the 1900s to the 1910s do you see any Igbo wearing an Okpu Agu.

Additionally, no known ancient figurines or statues, including the bronze artefacts discovered at Igbo-Ukwu, depict the Igbo wearing such headgear.

Compare this with the thousand-year-old Ife Bronzes, which depict ancient Oonis of Ife dressed EXACTLY as the current Ooni of Ife is dressed.

In conclusion, Sommachi, you will agree with me that there is no physical or circumstantial evidence of the existence of Okpu Agu before colonialism.

However, if you have such proof, I will be delighted to expand my education by reading about it from you.
