exactly what i meant thank goodness you just dropped another real life experience and its even annoying that these solar thieves will still stand on their lies that solar is good when in real life i have seen people spend over 15m on solar and still regrets it. Solar installers are like pastors, they keep recommending solutions that will have you throw in more money. The same installer that got the tube whatever batteries is now recommending lithium, then from lithium they come up with another recommendation of more panels, from there they tell you the inverter isn’t powerful enough and these are where they eat more money while the costumer gets nothing in return. Who cares to power a bulb, what can a bulb do, can it pump water or power an ac ?
Sometimes last year this topic came up and over 6 of them bombed my WhatsApp telling me that i am spoiling business for them, thats how low they have become. Theres a building close to mind with over 6panels and yet at night the bulb is so dim and blinking, i guess they need up to 12panels then.
Let me clarify a few points.

First, majority of solar products from Alaba International are substandard and often counterfeit—around 95% of them. Many customers and installers prefer Alaba due to the lower costs, but they tend to avoid purchasing directly from manufacturers because their prices are significantly higher. For many people, solar has become a source of livelihood, which is why you’ll often see individuals offering one-day training sessions and walking away with certificates. Within a week, they’ll claim to be professional installers.

Secondly, in 2023, Bill Gates visited a solar company in Nigeria. If renewable energy solutions were truly ineffective or if the company lacked expertise, it’s highly unlikely someone of Bill Gates' stature would have shown interest. This alone speaks volumes about the potential of the industry in the country.

I honestly try to avoid this solar discussion but something in me won't allow it..The truth is, you guys should not downplay people's experience.. Alot of people had a very very bad experience with solar, after spending millions.
My company had over 150 branch in Nig and we had solar in atleast a 100 outlet, my brother, what I notice is that everything usually work well for the first 3 to 6 month and after that na one story upon one story..We have changed vendor atleast thrice...What do we need to power? Just one AC, one Desktop, then some few POP bulb and maybe a fan, and two or 3 phones for staff that will want to charge their phone.
I was reviewing some invoices recently and I notice we have spent over 250 million within 2023 till date on this venture.
As at today, 80% of those solar in their respective branches are either not working at all or will give you less that 2 hour even if it's 100% charged...what we do now is to prevent our CEO from getting those info because how do we explain to her that all the solar that we spent hugely on is not working!
It is ONLY here that I hear that solar is very GOOD, the experience OUTSIDE is opposite.
It's okay if we need to sell our market tho.
I have contacted a popular solar installer here, am planning to do an audit of all the job they did for us...Approval is what is delaying us from proceeding, everyone is scared to tell madam that her 250M don enter voicemail, quite painful because we sold the idea to her, now going back to tell her stories again
I completely understand your frustration, and I appreciate your honesty in sharing this experience. It’s disheartening to hear about the challenges you’ve faced, especially after such a significant investment. Unfortunately, experiences like this often stem from system design not matching the intended load, poor quality components, or a lack of proper maintenance plans.
The major issue here could be related to adherence to the project charter, which typically outlines the specific equipment and appliances the solar system is designed to power. Once this charter is followed strictly, there should be no cause for alarm. For a system designed to handle one AC, a desktop, POP bulbs, a fan, and a few charging devices, consistent performance is achievable with proper design and implementation.
Additionally, with the advancements in lithium battery technology, the era of replacing batteries every year is over. These batteries are designed for durability and long-term performance, provided they are used and maintained correctly. The widespread issues you’re facing across multiple outlets suggest a need for a comprehensive audit, which you’ve rightly planned to conduct.
Your decision to investigate and identify the root cause is a critical step forward. Solar is indeed a reliable solution when systems are built to specification, maintained regularly, and aligned with the project charter.

Stop relying on accountants or individuals who lack understanding of the engineering field. Many installers cannot produce or interpret proper engineering designs, yet projects are often handed over to those without the necessary technical expertise. Nowadays, everyone claims to be an engineer, but when asked to provide their academic credentials, they often shy away

you thought you could get away with that comment. All i have done is provided receipts and all y’all solar installers have done is cho cho. Solar is for light bulbs only nothing more than that!!!

Solar installers are now like pastors, tell you the other guy is not good enough so who are now the good ones!
Interestingly, I came across this post on Twitter this morning and read through some of the comments. While many people offered constructive feedback, others went above and beyond by providing practical solutions. It’s worth noting that solar technology has advanced significantly there are even solar-powered electric vehicles now. It seems like your perspective may be rooted in past negative experiences, which could be holding you back from exploring better alternatives or opportunities for resolution.

I will say this again, the biggest problem here is fraud and or incompetence. 40 million is a lot for solar even in this economy. I live completely offgrid going to 8 years now and I have an AC running almost 24 7. My system even though I use very high end components (which many consider the BMW of solar components) don't cost me 15m in today pricing. This means if you use equally cheaper and just as capable solar components like reputable Chinese brands like Deye.. you can even get similar outcome for less.

I posted a video of some of the appliances I run on my system on my tiktok channel

Please before you draw conclusion, kindly understand the context of the conversation.

I came upon this post and it makes me kinda sad. Whoever posted this has obviously been duped by quarks and he is now projecting his experience everywhere. Before I proceed let it be known that I am not an installer neither do I do solar installation commercially.. I don't take jobs so I am not here for business. I am here just to share my experience on the viability of solar as an alternative and how economical it is.

Who am I, and what are my creds. I am an off-grid solar enthusiast and someone who have been using solar since 2016.. I have been completely off the nigerian grid since 2018 and I continue to live off-grid today. I setup my own system DIY and I also contribute a lot in terms of advocacy education and enlightenment on how we can improve the general standard and quality of installation and solar equipment available in Nigeria.

I run a Telegram group called "DIY Solar Nigeria" which has grown to over 6000 members. The group is focused on sharing experience and peer to peer support for Nigerians into solar or about to get into solar. We educate ourselves on best practices, resolve issues, share information on authorized dealers on solar product etc.

Like I said currently power my house completely on solar. I have a 10kW solar array, 10kva inverter and a 28kWh Lithium battery.

This system powers everything in the house. including 2 AC (1 can run for 12 hours and the other can run 24 hours) I also have vaccum, air fryer, 250 liter freezer 220 liter fridge (both of which are always run), I have a 1.5hp water pump, microwave and a home computer lab with over 15 mostly low power computers including a home automation cctv and media system + 2 65 inch TV and a host of other home appliances.

I have been growing my system little by little since 2016.. you can check my post history.

So yes, with the current state of things as at 2025, you can have a solar setup that would power all your house needs at least have 1 or 2 ACs especially if their are inverter ACs,

The biggest challenge is finding a competent installer who would do a competent system for you.

The hardest part of solar is design (it is not different from construction in that regards) once you start with a good design to match usage.. then you are off to a good start.

Here are some solar schematics I have worked on which you can use as reference for your own setup

Oga solar
Although I call it Oga solar, this is actually a slightly above mid sized system which should power 1 inverter AC run at least 12 hours a day especially when used with grid. It would be a very good generator replacement. I have indicated the average power that can be put on such a system in a daily basis. https://solarplan-l.openculture.org.ng/?ref=blog.openculture.org.ng

hansolo design is a more scaled down version oga solar and it is ideal for small house hold say 2 bed room apartment but can power 1 inverter AC over night https://solarplan-m.openculture.org.ng/?ref=blog.openculture.org.ng

here is a video were I installed a solar setup from scratch using the hansolo design.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blDPy4pUPYY

Again I did not come here to promote any business and I don't take jobs. I came to share my own experience on solar and dispel FUDs about solar.

Your passion for this field and your vast exposure to tools are truly remarkable. I encourage you to consider monetizing your knowledge, your expertise is highly needed in the tech industry.

no need arguing, it’s everywhere on tiktok those who spent millions and are regretting while solar guys are cashing out.
From the specifications of the product type, it is clear that this is a suboptimal installation. A 3KVA system is not suitable for running air conditioners without causing significant inefficiencies and operational issues. Another critical factor to consider is the type of battery used. For instance, using four tubular batteries for air conditioning is impractical and will not deliver effective results.

The solar market has become over saturated, with many claiming expertise in installation without fully understanding the fundamental principles of solar systems. Unfortunately, most customers tend to opt for electricians or general installers who lack the in-depth knowledge required to properly design and install solar systems. A true professional understands not only the system design but also the chemical composition, cycle life, and overall performance of the batteries.

Additionally, many solar product manufacturers are capitalizing on the market demand by flooding it with lower-quality products. For example, 99% of the dry cell and tubular batteries available in the market today have a cycle life of less than 2000 cycles, which is far below the industry standard for longevity. Most installers are unaware of what cycle life entails or how it impacts system performance. For comparison, many banks’ server rooms, which rely on solar systems, use dry cell batteries with cycle lives exceeding 6000 cycles. There is critical need for expertise and high-quality components in designing and installing solar solutions.

₦40 million kwanu? Just for the solar system to power possibly just one unit of AC. I've said it before on this forum and I will say it again. It makes no economic sense to spend close to 50 million on a Solar system just because you want it to power an AC unit.

It is better to have a budget of about ₦5 million on Solar. This will power lights, fan, fridge. Then get an Inverter generator to power AC for the few minutes one needs it and invest the remaining ₦35 million that will be yielding income to buy fuel to power the inverter generator.
Thank you for your input. From the previous discussion, I recall he mentioned 12-14 AC units.

What is the cost of this set up?
To successfully run an air conditioner (AC) on a solar-powered system, it is essential you determine the number of hours you intend to operate the AC daily.

For this setup, you should plan for a minimum battery storage capacity of 60 kWh lithium batteries, which will ensure sufficient energy reserves for stable operation. The overall cost of the system, range between ₦25 million and ₦40 million, depending on the number of hours the AC is expected to run and the quality of components selected.
