South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been jailed for five years for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Judge Thokozile Masipa, issuing the ruling in court in Pretoria, also gave Pistorius a three-year suspended sentence for a firearms charge. The prosecution had called for a minimum 10-year sentence; the defence for community service and house arrest.Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide but cleared of murder. 'Feeling of unease' Judge Masipa said: "Sentencing is about achieving the right balance. Sentencing is not a perfect exercise. She said there must be a balance between retribution, deterrence and rehabilitation. The judge began summarising the evidence brought before the trial. Ms Vergeer had argued Pistorius would be "a lot more vulnerable than the normal man" in jail. But Judge Masipa said she was sure prisons were equipped to cater for the requirements of a special needs inmate. http://www.tundeola.com/2014/10/breaking-news-oscar-pistorius-jailed.html http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-29700457

When I tell my driver that Tunji Okusanya of MIC is dead, I envision he will say, 'ah! man daada to ma'n fun mi l'owo yen!'(dat generous man!). I walked into his office to invite him 2 Season2 of our show in 2010. We had never met but he hugged me. He told me how he loved our show and how I would go far up the ladder of Success. I discovered that he liked to laugh a lot. On the day of recording, he came to time and when we were done, he shared money around like a politician going to the polls. And so we would become 'friends'. More like Egbon (elder sibling) and aburo (younger sibling). When my father died 2years later and we reeled in pain and confusion, his boys were there in 30mins with MIC's best hearse. Without a mention of money, they took my dad to the best morgue around and immediately started making plans for the burial. In his office, he gave me my pick of the best coffins and asked me to bring any amount of money I wished. 'I could do it for free', he said, 'but I don't want you to bury your father in a coffin that costs you nothing'. On burial day, he personally carried my father's body all the way to our village, Ajaawa, in Oyo State. He spent the night. Next morning, he danced in front of the coffin to and from the church and personally laid my dad to rest. He also stayed for the party after, 'spraying' money on us all as we all danced to Shina Peters, trying to bury our sorrow. When I returned to thank him in his Lagos office, he was wearing a beautiful pair of slippers. Black and obviously costly. 'I like your slippers Uncle', I said. He immediately removed them and insisted I must take them there and then! I protested long but he wouldn't budge. If you see me wearing a pair of Italian leather slippers, they are the ones. He explained to me how life was just fleeting and how we should try our best to avoid unhealthy attachment(s) to anything. You see, having buried so many, rich and poor alike, he had a view to life dat was uncommon & probably wholesome in health. He also agreed to come on our show for the 2nd time setting a record as the only Special Guest to have had that honor. When it was time to get married, he danced behind me on the engagement day, wearing my colors and yes, sharing money again. Not minding age, he threw himself prostrate beside me and my friends as we 'begged' for my wife in the tradition of the land. He would call me up every now and again, always chuckling. 'Iyawo mi nko', he would ask? (how is my wife?) He was in the habit of saying to my family, 'I love you guys'. I am not sure I ever said d same to him even though I felt it. And so I woke this rainy day as even the skies mourned and shed tears thinking 'surely if good deeds meant anything...surely if good deeds mean anything, this was a man who did not deserve to go thus. Surely not in this manner!' But what do I know? I am just another traveller on this parched tract. Your work and Legacy live after you Uncle Tunji. I love and will miss you. http://www.tundeola.com/2013/10/teju-babyface-writes-touching-tribute.html#more

Sometimes what you do in secret have a way of bringing you out for ridicule. This is the lesson a man who calls himself Pastor learnt when he decided to throw caution to the wind and succumbed to his lust. The 56yrs old Pastor, who was said to have been seriously embarrassed sometime ago by a man who caught him with his wife, has refused to change his ways. He picked a runs girl around midnight for a good time and took her to a joint where she satisfied him. However, at the end of the show, the lady decided to reveal her identity to the pastor: She said he picked her up on Friday night along Club Road in the Nakuru area of Kenya. "For sex. I mean that’s why he picked me. That’s what I do, I’m a prostitute," she confirmed. She said after the pastor enjoyed himself, she confronted him and revealed to him that she is a members of his church in city. According to her, he was shaken and pleaded with her not to expose him to any other member of the church. He gave her Sh20,000 instead of the usual Sh500 she collects for short time. Somehow the story got out as the lady later told one of her friend who leaked the "secret". The matter is said to be causing serious disquiet in the church, as many are wondering if the man is really a pastor. http://www.tundeola.com/2013/09/shocking-pastor-patronizes-prostitute.html

Seventeen-year-old Blessing Godspower, on Wednesday narrated how her mother sold her eight-month-old baby. The mother, Onyinyechi Nwabueze, 38, was paraded by the police at the ‘A’ Division of the Plateau State Police Command. Policemen from the division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Victor Dimkpa, a Chief Superintendent of Police, had rescued the baby, named Chiamaka, in Awka, the Anambra State capital. Blessing, who was staying with her mother at Rukuba Road area of Jos North, was put in the family way by her boyfriend, now no where to be found. After baby Chiamaka was delivered, Blessing’s mother decided to get rid of the baby. According to her, on July 19, her mother sent her on a phony errand in order to effect the “diabolical” act. She said, “My mother sent me on an errand, but when I came back I asked for my baby and my mother asked, ‘which baby?’ She feigned ignorance and at that point I started crying and reported the incident to the Police.” Police Commissioner, Mr. Chris Olakpe said, “After the mother sent her daughter away, she (Nwabueze) stopped a tricycle and took the baby to the first receiver, one Eucharia Anyaegbu. Anyaegbu transferred the baby to the second receiver, Rita Maduako, who finally sold the baby to 53-year-old unmarried woman, Grace Nnadozie.” Nnadozie, however, told our correspondent that after she applied to an orphanage home for a child without any result for the past two years, she sought Anyaegbu’s help. She said she gave N500,000 to Anyaegbu for the baby. Anyaegbu gave N350, 000 to Maduako. Maduako was to give N200,000 to the baby’s grandmother. But Nwabueze denied that she sold the baby. She said her daughter was very wayward, so she decided to give the baby out to somebody else who would take proper care of her. She said, “How can I sell my granddaughter. My daughter is not capable of taking care of the baby and I decided to give her to somebody who will take proper care of her.” Mrs Nwabueze however confessed that she lost her husband in 2007 and since then, she and the six children she had with him, had been finding things difficult. http://www.tundeola.com/2013/07/my-boyfriend-impregnated-me-my-mother.html

Analysis of U.S. Census data and other surveys show Nigerian immigrants and their descendants score highest when it comes to earning degrees. Nigerian Americans have long been known for their community’s intense cultural emphasis on education, and now an analysis of Census data coupled with several local surveys shows that Nigerians don't just value education, but surpass all other U.S. ethnic groups when it comes to obtaining degrees. "Being Black, you are already at a disadvantage," Oluyinka Olutoye, an associate professor of pediatric surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, told the Houston Chronicle. "You really need to excel far above if you want to be considered for anything in this country." According to 2006 census data, 37 percent of Nigerians in the U.S. had bachelor's degrees, 17 percent held master's degrees and 4 percent had doctorates. In contrast, the same census data showed only 19 percent of white Americans had bachelor’s degrees, 8 percent held master’s degrees and only 1 percent held doctorates, the paper reports. The census data was bolstered by an independent analysis of 13 annual Houston-area surveys conducted by Rice University and commissioned by the Chronicle. "These are higher levels of educational attainment than were found in any other...community," Stephen Klineberg, a sociologist at Rice University who conducts the annual Houston Area Survey, told the paper. However, despite the strides in education made by many African immigrants, including Nigerian-Americans, discrimination still colors their prospects for employment. A study of 2010 employment data by the Economic Policy Institute showed that, across nationalities and ethnic groups, Black immigrants carried the highest unemployment rate of all foreign-born workers. In addition to cultural expectations about obtaining higher education, the paper reports that many African immigrants are more likely to pursue higher education as a means of maintaining their immigrant status in the U.S. "In a way, it's a Catch-22 — because of immigration laws you are forced to remain in school, but then the funny thing is you end up getting your doctorate at the age of 29," Amadu Jacky Kaba, an associate professor at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ, told the paper. "If you stay in school, immigration will leave you alone." http://www.tundeola.com/2013/07/survey-nigerians-most-educated-in-us.html
