IGP drags Saraki, Senate to court for declaring him enemy of democracy
Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, yesterday, dragged the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, and the Senate before the Federal High Court in Abuja for declaring him an enemy of democracy.

Specifically, the IGP, in his suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/554/2018, prayed the court to bar the Senate from taking further steps with regard to a resolution it reached on May 9, wherein it purportedly passed a vote of no confidence on him. It will be recalled that Senate had in the said resolution, declared the police boss as unfit for any public office, following his repeated refusal to appear before it to answer questions pertaining to the spate of killings across the country and the inhuman treatment allegedly meted out on the lawmaker representing Kogi West, Senator Dino Melaye.

The U.S. Government has announced 102 million dollars (about 3.7 billion naira) in additional humanitarian assistance for Nigeria to address the sufferings of people affected by the Boko Haram insurgency. President Donald Trump of the US and President Buhari of Nigeria The U.S. Department of State said the fund would be used to address the shelter, health and food security needs of populations in the northeast still struggling with the effects of the Boko Haram insurgency. This fund for Nigeria represents the vast majority of the U.S. government’s new 112 million dollars infusion for the Lake Chad region.

The assistance would be administered primarily through the U.S. Agency for International Development’s offices of Food for Peace, and Foreign Disaster Assistance, as well as the U.S. State Department’s Bureau for Population, Refugees, and Migration. “Nearly a decade of conflict perpetuated by Boko Haram and its offshoot ISIS-West Africa has triggered a humanitarian crisis in the region. “More than two million people remain uprooted by the violence, and nearly 11 million people need assistance to survive.

“The funding in today’s announcement will provide life-saving aid to hundreds of thousands of people, including emergency food, nutrition treatment, shelter, health care, safe drinking water, services for survivors of sexual violence, and support to children separated from their families. “The United States is the largest donor for the humanitarian response in the Lake Chad region, having provided nearly 761 million dollars since Fiscal Year 2017. “While the United States remains committed to helping the people affected by this conflict, a comprehensive political and security solution is ultimately the only way to end their suffering and bring peace to the region.

“The United States calls on other donors to step up to address the basic life-saving needs of those displaced and the communities that host them,” the Department said. As of May 2018, an estimated 2.3 million people in the northeast experienced extreme food insecurity, largely due to widespread insecurity, protracted displacement, depleted assets, and the interruption of agricultural production throughout the region. Overall, an estimated 7.7 million people in the northeast require urgent humanitarian assistance.

“Even as the Nigerian security personnel make progress, access to those most in need remains tenuous in many areas and the operating environment is highly volatile,” the U.S. said.

Professor Kingsley Moghalu, the former deputy governor of Central Bank of Nigeria and Young Progressive Party presidential flagbearer, has promised to improve businesses and create jobs in the country through massive investment in technology, entrepreneurship and education reform.

To me, it just so happens to be 25,000 square feet. It happens to be six stories, which is a lot, but it doesn’t feel that way when you actually walk in. As you kind of move throughout the house, from one room to the next, it has this warm and very homey vibe.

Dr. Frederick Fasehun, the founder of the Oodua People’s Congress has called for the removal of military officers in charge of the Boko Haram campaign.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on the state of the nation, Fasehun said President Buhari should mandate the military to end Boko Haram insurgency within six months.

“The war of attrition unleashed by Boko Haram against defenceless citizens throughout the country continues unabated, nullifying Buhari’s campaign promise to end insurgency immediately after he took power. But the reality indicates that Boko Haram inflicts as many damages as before, with bombings, abductions and suicide squads going unabated”.

He also said, “President Buhari should sack military officers currently in charge of the Boko Haram campaign and mandate the defence team to end Boko Haram insurgency within six months. We seize this opportunity to demand the release of Leah Sharibu, the Chibok girls and other hostages in Boko Haram captivity. Every day they spend in captivity is a disgrace to this democracy.”

Fasehun added that the Federal Government should map out a workable road map to end the insurgency. “Reports from soldiers and officers on the field indicated that Boko Haram could be wiped out easily but for colluding military commanders who want the campaign prolonged for selfish commercial benefits,” Fasehun said.

He however, urged the Federal Government to comply with the global index that allegedly ranked Fulani herdsmen as a terrorist organisation and ensures that the herdsmen pay for their crimes.

The Nigerian Army on Saturday said it killed 10 Boko Haram insurgents during an operation at Ngelkona in Ngala Local Government area of Borno State.

Onyema Nwachukwu, Deputy Director Public Relations Theatre Command Operation Lafiya Dole, disclosed this in a statement released in Maiduguri.

Mr Nwachukwu said that the operation was conducted by troops of 153 Task Battalion with support of the Cameroonian Defence Forces deployed in Operation Lafiya Dole at about 11:30 a.m.

“The terrorists, who were mounted on horse back were overpowered by the troops in a fierce shootout, as the gallant troops killed the insurgents and captured two AK 47 rifles from them.

Other items recovered from the insurgents include one Boko Haram flag, a set of bow and arrows, two mobile handset and one Cameroonian international passport.
“In a separate clearance operation, troops of 82 Task Force Battalion of Operation Lafiya Dole yesterday in a night attack routed fleeing elements of Boko Haram insurgents at Ngoshe in Gwoza Local Government Area.

“During the attack, troops killed one insurgent and recovered one AK 47 rifle, 41 rounds of locally fabricated ammunition and four Improvised Explosive Devices(IED).

The recovered IEDs have been safely defused by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, he said.
“In another operational encounter, troops of 27 Task Force Battalion of Operation Lafiya Dole, on a long range fighting patrol, on Friday 1st June 2018 successfully conducted a raid operation on Boko Haram camp in Yaridiri forest in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe state.

“During the raid, the superior fire power of the troops forced the insurgents to flee in disarray with gunshot wounds, abandoning a huge sum of money and several other items,” the colonel said.

He added that the troops also recovered three AK 47 rifle magazines, 21 rounds of 7.62 mm (Special) ammunition, a motorcycle and two mobile handsets.

According to him, the troops also recovered the N2,280,000 from the hideout.

Michael Adebolajo, a Nigerian Islamic extremist who murdered British soldier Fusilier Lee Rigley in broad day light, has admitted his guilt in a jail confession and plans to write to Mr. Rigby’s family to apologise for the horrific slaying that took place opposite the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, London in 2013.

The 31-year-old who is serving life behind bars in high-security HMP Woodhill, outside Milton Keynes is regarded as the most dangerous prisoner in the British penal system.

It was reported that he expressed his remorse to fellow inmates and prison staff over the horrific slaying of the soldier, and also admitted he ‘misinterpreted’ the Koran having cited the Islam’s holy book moments after the attack, which he carried out with accomplice Michael Adebowale, now 27.

A source told The Sun on Sunday: ‘Adebolajo is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous extremists in the prison system. A month ago he approached a fellow inmate and a member of prison pastoral staff to say he finally regretted the murder and acknowledged he took an innocent life.’
According to other inmates, Adebolajo now wants to apologise to Lee’s family.

But Lee’s mother Lyn Rigby, 51, who battled depression since the death of her son is said to be repulsed by Adebolajo’s change of heart and will never forgive him.

She told The Sun on Sunday: ‘To hear his killer say that Lee was innocent and that he regrets killing him is the ultimate kick in the teeth.’

The Special Offences Court in Lagos has declared Innoson Motors boss Innocent Chukwuma wanted, Punch reports.

Judge of the court Mojisola Dada reportedly made the ruling while the court sat on Thursday.

Chukwuma had failed to make an appearance in court for a consecutive 5 times, prompting the judge to make the declaration.

Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ozioko, lamented Chukwuma’s absence, saying:
“This appears to be the fifth time this matter is coming up before your Lordship for arraignment.

The learned Senior Advocate of Nigeria representing the second defendant (Innoson) is still insisting on taking his application without ensuring the defendant is physically present in court.

The question is, where is the second defendant? Is he too big for the court? Is he too big for the Federal Republic of Nigeria? Is he too big because he has money? Where is he?

What my learned friends, the defence counsel are doing is contemptuous.

We shall be applying for an order to declare the second defendant wanted.”

The judge granted Ozioko’s application. She said:

The second defendant is hereby declared wanted and the case adjourned until June 22 for possible arraignment
