It's completely normal. Their visitor visas are tied to the duration of your diploma program, which is why they were issued for two years. Your child will get a visitor record when they arrive in Canada that will enable them to stay beyond six months and attend school. However, your spouse cannot work or stay and will have to depart Canada since you are not a master's or PhD student.

You can create a group account for your family, but you will still have to fill out the form for each individual separately. Make sure you make the application fee for both of you on the same day and choose the same date for biometrics so that both cases can be treated together. This is what I did for my family.
