Depression does not need any definition. If you have never experienced it, then it would be difficult to totally understand it even with the best explanation. It goes beyond moments of sadness. That sad feeling that hangs around you for weeks. The longest period I have experienced depression so far was one year. Is that really possible? You may wonder. Imagine, a task that should take 3 months to accomplish took me one year. For a whole year, I had no drive to achieve my goals. They were just there on paper. Lost interest completely, yeah a major sign of depression. Funny enough it was something I was so enthusiastic about previously. Did it affect my job? Oh yes! As a real estate agent, it was a continuous battle. Putting food on the table became a very difficult task. The nature of my job required been active, proactive and creative. It also required moving around inspecting properties here and there. …active, proactive and creative. I remember those days that I would go to the office and would be dozing while my colleagues were out in the field consolidating their client base and stretching their operations. The worst part was that I had no energy required to do the necessary job. Have you ever woken up in the morning exhausted and tired? This was normal experience for me. Having a good night rest was also a big challenge – sleeping properly was a problem. This was my experience for years. Because of my inability to put in effort in my job, my earning was low. Expenses were always overtaking me – bills were pilling up everyday. This became another source of worry, anxiety and depression. It became a vicious circle. The depression became worse when there was no money in my pocket even though I was on medication. This reminds me of a humorous acknowledgment from a friend “not all sicknesses need medicine, bank credit alerts would make you feel well” Imagine somebody struggling with depression also battling with poverty. How will he improve? Poverty and depression are becoming so closely linked these days especially in the Nigerian context. The line between the two is faint and blurry. Been a victim of depression is more than what words can describe. My interest on anything worthwhile dwindled. Isolating myself was the norm. I set many goals but could not achieve them. What can a person without drive and motivation really do? Sometimes, I would lie on bed and didn’t want to get up, not because I was enjoying the sleep, not because I was enjoying the comfort of the bed, not because I had nothing to do, but largely because I lacked the desire to get up. Oh God, how do I get out of this mess! No one really understood what I was passing through. My mind was like a computer that had been corrupted with a virus. For 10 years I grappled with it, and there was no hope in sight. It affected me in so many ways. I couldn’t complete my tertiary education(sober reflection, eyes moistened with tears). I don’t want to go down this lane, it would evoke terrible memories and open the floodgate of tears! Meanwhile, during all these years I was doing research to understand what was wrong with me. I got all the information I needed about it anywhere and everywhere. Doctors were always patient whenever I asked thought- provoking questions about the illness. They helped me understand what I was really experiencing – bipolar affective disorder! Hmm, no wonder sometimes I had zero energy and another time was hyperactive. This lifted the veil off my eyes.
