A 60- year- old man from Niger Republic, Isa Usman, has been arrested by the police for raping a 9 -year- old girl at Kure Ultra Modern Market, Minna where he owns a pure water shop . LEADERSHIP gathered that Usman, who has been in Niger State since he came from Niger Republic over two decades ago, is a father of 12 children who owns one of the shops in the ultra modern market. A source in the market told LEADERSHIP that the 9- year- old girl that he raped was one of the girls that usually helped him to hawk pure water in the market for some stipends. It was learnt that Usman engaged in the act in a broad day light when the market was in session and the cry from the girl while he was having canal knowledge of her attracted people in the market who forced themselves into his shop and saw him on top of girl. Shocked by the incident, traders in the market descended on him to rescue the small girl and would have maimed him but for the timely intervention of the police in the market. When LEADERSHIP visited the market, it was gathered that the old man had already been transferred to GRA police division where the market police post falls under in the state capital , Minna. Confirming the incident however, the police public relations officer of the Niger State police command, ASP Bala Elkana, said that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. http://leadership.ng/news/467052/defiling-nigerien-60-rapes-9-year-old-in-minna?

Amnesty International said last month that the Boko Haram conflict had killed at least 1,600 people since the start of June in Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon and called for more protection for civilians. An AFP tally puts the death toll at more than 1,320 in Nigeria alone since Muhammadu Buhari became president on May 29. Boko Haram claimed responsibility for three suicide attacks in the satellite towns of Kuje and Nyanya outside Nigeria’s capital Abuja on October 2, which killed a total of 18 people and injured 41. On Tuesday, Nigeria’s most senior police officer, Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase, said two people had been arrested on suspicion of masterminding the blasts. The suspects’ identities were not disclosed but Arase said in a statement the arrests had “foiled another attempt… to undertake further attacks in the FCT (Federal Capital Territory)”. Items recovered from the suspects included 12 “prepared and primed” home-made explosives concealed in soft drink cans, 28 electronic detonator parts and a “large quantity” of bomb-making equipment, he added. Nigeria’s military has claimed a series of successes in recent months and has characterised the upsurge in attacks on civilian targets as desperation on the part of the Islamic State group-alled militants. Attacks have also continued across the border. At the weekend, 41 people were killed and another 48 injured in triple explosions in Baga Sola, on the Chadian side of Lake Chad, where Nigeria meets Niger, Chad and Cameroon. One targeted a fish market and two a refugee camp for those displaced by the violence.

One Gbeminiyi Oke, an alleged staff of the University of Lagos (Unilag) has been arrested and charged before an Isolo Magistrates’ court for allegedly defrauding an admission seeker under false pretense of securing a post graduate admission in the school. Oke allegedly collected N200, 000 from one Reginald Mbanusi under the charade of registering him for post graduate diploma in Economics in the school. According to reports, Oke had convinced Mbanusi that he was a staff of Unilag and he was entitled to a slot in the admission exercise every academic year. Mbanusi had expressed his frustration to get admission for post graduate studies and Oke promised to assist him and asked him to pay N200, 000 to facilitate the admission, which he did. Oke reportedly collected his documents and promised to process the admission. P.M.NEWS reports that despite paying the money and promises made by Oke, no admission was given to Mabnusi. To that effect, the victim requested for the refund of his money and Oke told him the money was paid for his admission but he could not get a refund because he was not qualified to be admitted. Subsequently, the matter was reported to the police at Area ‘D’ Command Mushin and Oke was arrested and taken to the command. Meanwhile, the police reportedly made every effort for Oke to refund the money which failed. He was, however, charged to court with criminal dishonesty and stealing under the Criminal Code. The presiding Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Adebayo, granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum, after he pleaded not guilty. Oke was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri pending the perfection of bail. http://dailypost.ng/2015/10/14/unilag-staff-remanded-in-prison-for-duping-admission-seeker/? |
