Nairaland GeneralNow The Question Is; How Can We Protect Our Power Stations From Being Sabotaged? by safety247(op): 11:58am On Mar 16, 2016
The honourable Minister for power, Baba Tunde Fashola had told Nigerians that it is not possible for the government to keep building power stations and militants for whatsoever reason keeps blowing them up and expect constant power. Can we really eat our cake and have it at the same time? I don't think so!

As at February power generation was near 5060MW but in early March, militants blew the main substation in Bayelsa and we lost about 1600MW. Soon after, they blow Warri substation and we lost 1000MW. That makes generation to be below 3000MW.

South Africa generates over 50000MW of electricity for her population that is about one- third of Nigerian's. The amount of megawatts sabotaged in one month in Nigeria has never been recorded in South Africa since they started their power generation.

Now the question is; How Can We Protect Our Power Stations From Being Sabotaged?

The government can involve community heads to initiate both land, water and aerial surveillance, prompt and sound response team of these facilities.

People should start seeing themselves as custodian of government and public facilities and assets.

Report those planning to sabotage to the appropriate authorities -don't be involved in any act of vandalism.

Government can introduce Information Technology into our protection mechanism. Since vandalism usually occur in the remote regions and bushes, the use of satellite communication to work with Drones are necessary.

Orientation, campaign, enlightenment and public awareness on the effects of the act is mightily important. As well as provision of jobs for the jobless youths to keep them busy and to divert their attention from the act of vandalism.

Nairaland GeneralWho Checks The Excesses Of Keke? by safety247(op): 9:12am On Jan 26, 2016
The activities of tricycle popularly called keke, and keke Marwa in some states is one of the many oversights function of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRCN).

The major statutory function of the FRCN,is making the highway safe for motorist and other road users, also educating motorists and members of the public on the importance of road discipline on the highway, but spotting this keke meters away from their checkpoint or position if you like and few miles away from their office at Ovwian Aladja area gives a question mark to their activities in warri.

The FRCN in warri and environs, tend to streamline their checks to drivers license and vehicle papers, forgetting the dangers of overload of both personnel and goods

EducationWho Takes The Blame For The Fallen Educational System In Nigeria by safety247(op): 2:50pm On Jan 02, 2016
There are numerous problems plaguing our education sector today, from elementary to higher education, the standard is falling, and our morals are eroding in a geometric proportion. It is necessary for us to examine the cause(s) of our problems if we are to find a way out of them. Having taken interest in this sector for a while, I came to a personal conclusion as to whom and what is responsible for this decay. Although we are all guilty, but the blame shouldn’t be shared equally. In my own opinion, the following are responsible for this decay

1) THE GOVERNMENT- It is supposed to maintain the standard, right from the start, but the government has proven to be the biggest failure of all. Government after government has continuously turned their backs on our education sector, it has allowed the standards to fall, and when it should have acted, it has turned a blind eye. Public schools are the worse you can think of in any state you visit. Students sitting on Windows, and cement blocks, or writing on wooden slates, teachers writing on bare wall in the absence of black boards are all common features of our public schools. Aside infrastructure, the government has also failed to regulate and closely monitor education in Nigeria. But year after year, a reasonable sum of money is budgeted for education. What exactly is the money used for? only the government can answer.

2) EXAMINATION COUNCILS/ MALPRACTICE. Although many people believe that examination malpractice is merely a product of the decay, I strongly believe it is a cause of the decay. The ease with which malpractice is carried out during external examinations, and the huge success rate associated with it has made preparing for such exams an unnecessary task. Why read when you can cheat and pass with ease? After all no one is interested in what you know, they are only interested in your result. Gone were the days when malpractice was done in secret. These days it is an open affair, everyone is involved. Some exam centers are dubbed “miracle centers”. If you sit for exams in such centers, you are surely going to make 9credits no matter how empty and cold your brain is. What many schools do is to simply collect “cooperation fee” from the students, with which they bribe the supervisor, who then turns a blind eye to whatever happens in the exam hall. This phenomenon has created an atmosphere of seriousness among school children. Jamb is not left out. As far as 1week to the exam date, people are already buying answers to the questions; some even go as far as posting adverts online. How did they get access to it? Jamb has a case to answer. Times have changed; hence the examination bodies must change their tactics to suit the current reality...

CareerMaking New Year's Resolutions And Keeping It! by safety247(op): 11:35am On Jan 01, 2016
Change they say is the only thing in life that is constant. People change with time and so does dreams and aspirations. The coming of the New Year is a perfect time to flash back, reflect on the change we need or want to make. It’s an opportunity to start afresh, take a bold step, and make corrections. Resolution is like a chance or an opportunity to measure, access our targets or goals.

Some common New Year’s Resolutions we make are, lose weight, get a fitness routine, quit smoking, overcome a fear or mental block, and enrich vocabulary. Give up on a bad habit, to be well informed about the goings on around the world, to be organized in doings, learn a new language, and create more time for the family, debt management. The list is unending.

New Year’s Resolutions are easy to make but extremely difficult to maintain. You will definitely agree with me that a good percentage of people who make a New Year resolution don’t even remember they made any resolutions few months into the New Year. Let’s start with you: What was the resolution you made last year?

Some of the reasons we fail can be “you have too many goals, you’re afraid to fail, the goals were unrealistic and the goals were not properly defined”.

To succeed your goals or aspirations must be S.M.A.R.T. That is to say- Specific; the goal should clearly outline the action that you’re going to take rather than the end result that you want.

Measurable; the goals should be clear enough that you can say whether or not you’ve reached it.

Achievable; the goal must be difficult enough to put you out of your comfort zone, but not so difficult as to be discouraging.

Relevant; the goal must be in line with the broader, longer- term goals you have in mind.

Time; the goal must be attainable in short term. If it takes too long, you’re likely to lose steam before you get there.

Nairaland GeneralThe Action Of This Squad Of The Nigerian Police Will Amaze You by safety247(op): 6:39am On Dec 26, 2015
The men of the Nigeria police is generally believed by majority of Nigerians to be very corrupt in all ratifications but this experience with Inspector Paul and his squad of the Nigerian police force proves otherwise..

Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri has this experience with men of the police force and joyfully shared it on her Facebook page.
“Please join me to thank Inspector Paul that led the patrol team at Lagos-Ibadan express way today.
There is a telephone number displayed at the back of the police truck.
My car suddenly started jerking on the highway and I had to stop to check. The police officers probably saw me looking confused with a lot of kids in the car, and they pulled back. Together with his team, they opened the bonnet and saw my battery detached again from the terminal head. They brought out a tool box from their own vehicle and fixed the problem. When they were sure I was Ok, they then escorted me a bit before they waved goodbye.
Despite the rot in the Nigerian Police Force, there are still few officers out there determined to make a difference, enough respect, Inspector Paul. And he’s so cute.”
discovernaija will have a chat with Inspector Paul as the year begins, catch the interview with him here.

InvestmentImbibing The Culture Of Saving by safety247(op): 4:44am On Dec 21, 2015
My grand pa once said to me during a planting section in his farm “Son, It’s what you give to the ground, it gives you in return”. I never quite understood that statement till many years later. Saving is simply setting aside part of your earnings, income or salary for future use or for a rainy day.

It also involves reducing expenditure such as recurring cost. A popular term for this in Nigeria these days is “cutting down cost”.

Imagine a farmer who eats up all his grains of corn after harvesting. What is he going to doing during the next planting season? Sometime we feel that with the hardship around and little salary we earn it is impossible to save. The fact remains no matter how much you earn you it is still very possible to still save. You just have to be disciplined and determined. DiscoverNaija had stated below some of the reasons we must learn to save part of our monthly incomes.

Retirement; With job uncertainty and casualisation of workers on the increase, it is mightily important we have a personal retirement plan. It is much better to keep aside 1000, 2000, or 3000 Naira than not to keep anything at the end of every month. The little amount you set aside will definitely help you when you retire.

Upgrading; If you have plans to go back to school, buy a car, own a house or change your standard of living. Saving is your best bet since your one month salary cannot afford it. Start saving today so you have the money available when you need it.

Debt; A lot of people are in debt today and they think it is normal. The fact is, it’s not. Getting into debt is much easier than it is coming out of them. Start saving today to avoid borrowing tomorrow.

Emergencies; Saving for emergency is very difficult because they can be unpredicted. However you can easily get yourself into debts if you don’t save for such a rainy period.

Saving is very difficult but you have to consider the benefits. Be determined to save some cash every month!

RomanceIdeal Gifts This Christmas by safety247(op): 9:12am On Dec 18, 2015
Christmas season is well known as a season we exchange gift items to families, friends and well-wishers. Sometimes, deciding on what and what gifts to buy usually give a headache and of course sleepless nights. DiscoverNaija had made a list of possible gift you can present to loved ones this Christmas.

Leather wallet, belt or neck tie. Bottle of alcohol (spirit or wine) is perfect for adult male (father, uncle, senior bros, landlord and the likes)

Children, nephew or niece. All fruits baskets or hampers, stationaries or toys, shoes or clothes are nice for these categories of persons.

The Mr./Mrs. You can get them a photo album, a cloth or wrapper with which to make traditional costumes with. Perfumes, couple’s wrist watch.

For sweet mum, mothers in law. Box of jewelry, make up kit. Hand bag, fitness equipment, perfumes.
Boyfriend and girlfriend category. Polo, T-shirt, under wears such as boxer short, singlet, victoria secret or lingerie.
Cash gift can also go along with these gifts. But it is well agreed that any amount of money you give might be forgotten after it’s been spent as well as food after it’s been eaten!

Compliments of the Season!

FamilySafety Tips For The Christmas Holiday Season by safety247(op): 8:23pm On Dec 16, 2015
The last month of the year usually brings with it lots of excitement and anticipation, preceding the usual Christmas and New Year celebrations. As this festive season approaches, let us take time to reflect on our personal and domestic safety. Remember that you can only share from the joy of the season if you stay accident or injury-free, one day at a time.
At Home
• Ensure there is a place for everything and everything is in its place- maintain good housekeeping,
• Clean up spills immediately, they constitute slip hazards
• Handle sharp objects with care and keep away from children, they can hurt you easily; beware of pinch points (sharp edges, door hinges etc.)
• Use electrical appliances as directed by the manufacturer, avoid multiple connections from one socket
• Always discuss the safe way to do various domestic tasks with the family, discourage shortcuts.
• Discuss fire safety with the family.
• Develop and review emergency response plans with the family
• Install smoke detectors/alarm at appropriate locations in the house
• When attending a party, always designate a non-drinking driver.
Travelling Tips
• Imbibe the culture of journey management- Ask yourself the question “IS THIS TRIP NECESSARY”?
• Ensure your vehicle is fit for the trip; check your brakes, lights, tires pressure, etc. before embarking on any trip; wear your seat belt always, don’t cut corners, your life could be on the line.
• Avoid night travels; plan to commence your trip early.
• Do not drive under stress or fatigue; take enough rest before embarking on any trip.
• Avoid distractions – cell phones, emotional discussions, family, etc.-while driving
• Maintain reasonable speed; be aware of weather and road conditions
• Follow the rules of defensive driving:
* Check your rearview and side mirrors for oncoming traffic at intervals
* Yield to drivers who are determined to get there first.
* Always expect the other driver to do the unexpected.
* Watch for sudden movements.
* Keep a reasonable distance with the vehicle in front of you-follow the 2 seconds rule and adjust as necessary for weather and road conditions.
• Do not drink and drive “DON’T HAVE A CRASH, DON’T CAUSE A CRACH, DON’T BE A VICTIM OF A CRASH.
Fire safety
• Handle all combustibles (petrol, kerosene) with care – keep combustibles away from sources of ignition or naked flames.
• Be mindful of electricity – avoid overloading a circuit, use the right plugs for all connections (do not use two pin plugs in three pin sockets, get the right adaptor.
• Turn off electrical appliances if you are going to be away for extended period of time
• If you have to burn trash, do not leave the fire unattended; keep children away.
• Discourage the use of fireworks, bangers, knock outs and other pyrotechnics by children or self.
• Switch off your cell phone when handling flammable liquids – especially when refilling your generators do not use your mobile phone as torch light.

HealthUnpleasant Smell by safety247(op): 6:44am On Apr 03, 2015
A kindergarten teacher decided to let her class play a game. She told each child to bring along a plastic bag containing a few potatoes.
Each potato will be given a name of a person that the child hates.

This means the number of potatoes that a child will put in his/her plastic bag will depend on the number of people he/she hates.

So when the day came, every child brought some potatoes with the name of the people he/she hates. Some had 2 potatoes; some 3 while some up to 5 potatoes.

The teacher then told the children to carry with them the potatoes in the plastic bag wherever they go for 1 week.

Days after days passed by, and the children started to complain due to the UNPLEASANT smell let out by the rotten potatoes. Besides, those having 5 potatoes also had to carry heavier bags.

After 1 week, the children were relieved because the game had finally ended.
The teacher asked: “How did you feel while carrying the potatoes with you for 1 week?”

The children let out their frustrations and started complaining of the trouble that they had to go through having to carry the heavy and smelly potatoes wherever they go.

Then the teacher told them the hidden meaning behind the game.

She said; “This is exactly the situation when you carry your HATRED for somebody inside your heart. The stench of HATRED will contaminate your heart and you will carry it with you wherever you go.

If you cannot tolerate the smell of rotten potatoes for just 1 week, can you imagine what is it like to have the stench of HATRED in your heart for your lifetime?”

Morals of the story…
Throw away any HATRED for anyone from your heart.

Love drives the wheel of DIVERSITY.
Love enables us appreciate one another.

It makes us see ourselves as one rather than being different.

DIVERSITY can only thrive in a soil of LOVE
