A former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Saturday, turned himself in for interrogation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

This came weeks after this newspaper reported how the top member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) shunned previous invitations by the anti-corruption agency.

His decision to turn himself in could have been made to avert possible arrest which our reporter learnt was being planned by the commission.

Top EFCC officials, who asked not to be named because they had no permission to speak on the matter, told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr Kwankwaso arrived at the headquarters of the commission in Abuja before noon on Saturday.



“This was after repeated invitations not honoured by him,” one of the sources said.

Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC’s spokesperson, could not be immediately reached for comments.

A close aide, who sometimes speaks for Mr Kwankwaso, said he would get back to our reporter, but had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Petition
The former governor is being investigated over a 2015 petition by Concerned Kano State Workers and Pensioners, who alleged that he violated the Kano State Pension and Gratuity Law of 2007 in the management of pension remittances amounting to about N10 billion contributed between 2011 and 2015.


Mr Kwankwaso, earlier governed Kano State between 1999 and 2003, before he returned for his second term from 2011 to 2015.

The 64-year-old also served as the senator representing Kano Central between 2015 and 2019.

According to the petitioners, Mr Kwankwaso had directed that pension remittances be used for housing development, largely to favour the pensioners.



A tripartite deal was later reached between Kano State Pension Trust Funds as the investors and Kano State Investment and Property Limited and Kano State Housing Corporation Limited as developers on a 60:40 sharing ratio.

However, after contracts for the construction of 1,579 houses were awarded for the development of ” Kwankwasiya, Amana, and Bandarawa Cities”, the petitioners alleged, Mr Kwankwaso “manipulated” the process to terminate the term of the agreement and made outright allocations in favour of his aide and cronies.

The alleged manipulation happened in May 2015, the month Mr Kwankwaso left office as Kano’s governor.

Mr Kwankwaso is not the only politically exposed person who shunned an invitation by the EFCC last week, findings by this newspaper show.

As of the time of filing this report, Mr Kwankwaso had been grilled for hours by EFCC operatives.

It is not clear yet if he will be released on bail or pass the night in custody.

A 24-man medical team arrived in Sokoto on Saturday to conduct free open heart surgeries.



The belongs to the International Organisation for Relief, Welfare and Development, a division of the Muslim World League ( MWL) based in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

Bashar Abubakar, Special Assistant on New Media to Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC-Sokoto), said in a statement in Abuja that the gesture was facilitated by the lawmaker who is a member of the MWL.

According to the statement, the team is made up of cardiothoracic surgeons, intensive care doctors, anesthesiologists and specialised nurses.



“The medical doctors are mainly from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria, Philippines and Sudan, among others.

“So far, 20 patients suffering from various cardiovascular diseases have been screened and the one-week exercise takes off on Sunday.

“The team, which came with various medical equipment, drugs and other medicaments had since inspected facilities at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, venue of the one week exercise“, the statement said.

It said that the team would work together with some local medical experts at the hospital.


“If a patient is to sponsor himself or herself for any of the surgery, it will cost between N4 million and N8 million, but it is all free under the exercise.

“It is aimed at further alleviating the sufferings of the less privileged members of the society, as well as curbing medical tourism.

“This is also part of my efforts to reduce the health burden of the people of the state and not only my constituents, as well as complement the efforts of the governments,” the statement quoted Wamakko as saying.



Wamakko commended the organisation for the invaluable gesture of assisting indigent patients.

`This unparalleled effort is truly a once-in-a-life time lifeline to these beneficiaries and it will greatly reduce the health burdens of these cardiovascular ailments in Nigeria,” he said.

The statement also quoted some of the eligible beneficiaries as commending Wamakko, a former governor of the state, for attracting the team to the state. (NAN)

A retired employee of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), was found dead in his room during a sex session with two teenagers who he promised to give jobs.

The incident happened in Akwa Ibom.



According to Nigerian Tribune, an anonymous neighbour, said that the man, (an Igbo man, name withheld), engaged in a sex orgy with two teenagers. He lured them into his bed by promising jobs in NIPOST.

“The deceased died of apparent exhaustion arising from the marathon sex with two teenage girls whom he promised to inform of available job offers through the post office located with the Ibom Plaza arena in Uyo.

“We discovered his remains outside the building at about 3 am. When we inquired at his house, we met two girls who claimed the deceased brought them to spend the night. They feigned ignorance of the death of the man; telling us the man went outside to ease himself” the source said.

Spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP Odiko Macdon, confirmed the incident. He also said that the two girls have been arrested.

A Nigerian woman, Amenze Rita, has allegedly been shot dead by her husband, Pierangelo Pellizzar after she reportedly filed for divorce in Noventa Vicentina, Italy.

The 31-year-old woman was killed in front of her colleagues in the parking lot of Mf Mushroom, a company where she worked on Friday morning, September 10.



It was gathered that the 61-year-old suspect laid an ambush for Amenze at about 7:30am and shot her four times, killing her instantly.


After killing Amenze, he reportedly escaped from the crime scene aboard a grey Cherokee Jeep which was later found abandoned at his brother’s house.



However, the carabinieri are currently on hunt for the suspect, who is said to armed and dangerous.

According to Italian media, Amenze was killed because she filed for divorce after she returned from Nigeria a week ago.

A man of 48 years has been detained by police officers in Manyara Province after he allegedly killed a 25-year-old man named Michael Jackson for chewing his 22-year-old wife Habida Saidi. Samwel Alfred is said to have killed the invader of his territories by cutting him severally with a panga he was holding in his arms.



The police commander in the Manyara area Merrison Mwakyoma said that the incident took place in the morning hours of Wednesday 8th September 2021. Alfred left his wife claiming that he was going to fetch firewood, it was around 10 a.m, he left his wife at home because she was still in bed enjoying the morning dream. Immediately Alfred left the house, the wife made a call inviting Jackson to satisfy her at her place.

With no hesitation, Alfred quickly joined a married wife for an action, they chose to do the act under the cowshed since she felt unsafe to do it inside the house. They began their session not knowing that the unseen husband had planned to trap her. The man then showed himself and caught the two enjoying their session, he immediately cut the visitor severally using the panga he was holding, the wife tried defending the man but she ended up losing her arm. The man died instantly after the action.

It is said that the deceased was warned earlier against engaging in the act with a married woman but he did not listen. The man on the other hand knew about his wife seeing another person and so he set a trap to catch her. He is currently under police custody awaiting to be arraigned in court.
