Nairaland / General / Now That Boko Haram Is World’s No 2 By Bolaji Tunji by sammiestar: 11:17am On Nov 22, 2014
For most discerning Nigerians, the war against Boko Haram has not really started, though the Nigerian leadership would say otherwise. And I am not sure the war would really start notwithstanding what the military authority would want us to believe. It is not that soldiers are not in the theatre of war. But what has been the result of the military effort. On a daily basis, we are assaulted with pictures and reports of people moving from their communities to areas they consider safe. As at today, there are some communities still under Boko Haram. And let us not forget that we still have over 200 Chibok girls in the custody of the sect.
So going by the result posted so far, the military has not distinguished itself in this war. Most Nigerians are finding it difficult to accept that the military can deal decisively with the menace. Thus it was not really a surprise when the news broke that Mubi which had been captured by the sect was retaken by local hunters, a feat that was impossible for the ‘professional’ Nigerian Army to accomplish. Though it was said the task was achieved with the help of the Nigerian Army, but the role played by the army was not stated. The military has not equally come out to state the role it played in the battle.
What kind of support did they give? Who led the attack? Was the attack led by one of the hunters or an army officer? One was thus left wondering how this feat was achieved. We have seen pictures and video recordings of the Boko Haram fighters surrounded by death-dealing arsenals which have enabled them to put our soldiers on the run, with some of them taking refuge or as the military would call it, tactically withdrawing into neighbouring countries of Cameroun and Chad.

So I started imagining how the local hunters performed the ‘miracle’, because it is nothing short of a miracle. I imagine the local warriors with their cutlasses and swords, grazing sticks, charms and amulets tied round their waists, taking on the insurgents and recapturing the town, with soldiers providing the rear support. The image being painted here may seem outlandish, but I hope I would be pardoned for this because, I cannot wrap my mind round the fact that the hunters could be as equally equipped as the Boko Haram and even our professional soldiers. Thus the people in those states being tormented by the insurgents should quickly organize all their hunters to confront Boko Haram and not wait on the Nigerian Army. It is not as if I have anything against the Nigerian Army but it is indeed a shame that the army is finding it difficult to fulfill its constitutionally assigned role and had to rely on local hunters. What became of professionalism? Or is it the case of pepper soup drinking as alleged by former Lagos police spokesman, Alozie Ogugbuaja some years back, that has taken the sting out of our military? What this implies is that the army or the federal government lacks the capacity to protect Nigerians.

Have we ever bothered to find out the casualty figure among the local hunters. Who compensates their families for the loss? Are they being paid salary the way our soldiers are being paid? How are they organized? Is it not even possible for Boko Haram members to infiltrate their ranks? These are questions that should bother every Nigerian and the political and military leadership.

But the major issue today is not even about the occupation of one part of the country, but the recent revelation that the sect has become the world number two terror group. According to a Reuters report on Tuesday which quoted the Australia and the United States-based Institute for Economics and Peace, the sect is now second to Islamic State, another terror group in the middle East.

The meaning of this is that the Nigerian insurgents have overtaken the Taliban and even al Qaeda in violence. How did we come to this sorry pass? Since the sect began its operation about five years ago, why has it been difficult to decisively tackle them. Looking at the budget since 2009 till date, defence has always taken a lion share of the budget and till date, about $32billion has allegedly been spent in the fight against terror. So if we are spending so much, why do we continue hearing that our soldiers are ill-equipped? Even with personnel cost, there should still be enough to procure arms and equip the army, so how has the money been spent?

What about the national assembly committee overseeing this sector, should they not perform their oversight function better especially at this period when we have this major issue in the country.

The Boko Haram insurgency should not be seen as a Jonathan, northern or North East problem. It is a Nigerian problem and the earlier we see it that way the better. I recall that during the World Economic Forum on Africa in May this year, the major concern was the insecurity in the country, thus depriving the country the opportunity to showcase its economic growth.

The North East is especially in dire strait as no economic activity is taking place. People and businesses have relocated, gradually turning that part of the country into a desolate, no-go area. The election is just around the corner, are we sure there would not be an escalation in violent activities. For how long shall this continue?

Politics / Nigeria: A Nation On Death Row...must Read Adekoya Boladale by sammiestar: 11:08am On Nov 22, 2014
In a few months time, Africa most populous nation, Nigeria will be heading to the polls to elect its political representatives in an electoral exercise that has been predicted to be the fiercest yet political battle in the history of the country and a great decider to the unity and continuous existence of the 1914 amalgam and by extension the stability of Africa as a whole.

For a country that has witnessed decades of military misrule and dictatorial governments, there is a resounding appeal to ensure the continuous play of democracy and political stability. Like every other country, Nigeria is faced with its own challenges. The slippery war against terrorism, where the dreaded Boko Haram group has continuously held the country to ransom with tonnes of atrocities among which are the numerous genocides that is claiming thousands of helpless and vulnerable lives. The unabating kidnappings especially that of over 200 girls of Chibok Secondary School and the unending massacre of many others on a nearly daily basis has become a major source of concern to residents of the country and even the world at large.

The current political play in the country towards the 2015 general election points clearly towards doomsday. The country is currently divided along partisan class laced around religion and ethnicity. While majority of distance analysts simply see the current brouhaha as normalcy in the build up to the election, experiences of the immediate past points otherwise.

In 2011, shortly after the presidential election which saw Mr. Goodluck Jonathan emerged president, a devastating turmoil broke out in major states and cities in the Northern part of Nigeria. Many who had analysed the scenario saw it as the uprising of some individuals against the failure of their preferred candidate to emerge victorious but far away from this assumption, the violence that greeted the 2011 election was bitterness and hatred concoctioned in betrayal. As against the widely reported news then, the violence was nothing other than a civil war. For individuals like myself who was caught between the flames and brimstone it wasn’t just about loosing an election but the outpouring of decades of suppressed hatred, intolerance and ethnicity. Individuals who were lynched and house razed weren’t done because of the differences in voting, it was a direct attack on non Muslims and non Northerners alike. Many who had lived in the North all their lives and even voted for the Northern candidate fell victim of this rage and innocent youth corps members’ ( who were seen as strangers to the land) were brutally declared persona non grata.

I say this because the current political situation in the country is heading towards 2011 and maybe much more dreadful. The major opposition party called the All Progressive Congress (APC) is hell bent on taking over the country’s affairs in 2015 while the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which has been in power for over 16 years has sworn not to let go.

But morality of the parties is nothing to lose sleep over. The greater threats are the candidates both are likely to put forward. President Jonathan sees a failed reelection as a shame and insult to his family and his region as a whole. His kinsmen from the Niger Delta feels the same and the unguarded statements from top ‘ex’ militants from the region (who seems to have an expansive arsenal) points clearly that they would give everything to hold on to power. The opponent on the other hand, retired general Buhari is a well respected man who enjoys a wide range of appeal across the country (except for his perceived rigid mono-religious believe) and commands an assembly of radical and unruly followers majorly Northern youths who are determined to ensure he emerge president or they die trying.

With the current postulations of possible electoral outcome, the odds favours the President as the Nigeria voting pattern is more ruralist than cosmopolitan. Unfortunately for the opposition, the rural climes are less concerned about who emerges president as their major concern is limited to the local and state politics hence the party with the most ubiquitous structure in a particular state wins such state no matter who is flagging its presidential flag. If Mr. Jonathan emerged victorious ‘the baboon’ may likely be ‘soaked in blood’.

Far from the rumoured analysis of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the possible breakaway of Nigeria in 2015, the response to another defeat of General Buhari in 2015 will be nothing short of catastrophic especially at a time when more weapons and IEDs seems to have gained access to the North coupled with a psychological frame mind of war that as engulfed the region as a result of the unending insurgency.

To say Africa will not share in this if Nigeria burns is underplaying the obvious. For a country of over 160,000,000 people the number of possible displaced persons seeking refuge will overwhelm the whole of Africa. Nigeria being a center piece of Africa’s unity will cause greater instability to other regions and creates a vibe of fear and a volcanic economic crisis.

Suggesting that the 2015 election be postponed will amount to only shifting the danger. 2015 deserves to hold, the people deserves to choose their leaders. A possible way to avert the looming war is having the President stepdown from the presidential race in the interest and unity of Nigeria but this will be asking too much of a man the world has already tagged weak and indecisive. Another way out is appealing to the opposition party to chose another candidate other than Buhari whose defeat may send the country into flames but for a party that has given everything to become where and what it is today, such plea will appear selfish.

While the world awaits the coming tsunami, the electoral commission and indeed concerned world leaders should ensure that the parties and candidates sign an undertaken to take full responsibility of any uprising that might ensure after the election, such document shouldn’t be localised but better signed at Hague.

Nigerians should be made to understand that killing fellow citizens in the disguise of political persuation is nothing but murder and such can never be justified. Politicians are never worth dying or killing for, as those who declare war most often never lead.

Nairaland / General / President Jonathan:for About A Week Now There Have Been No Reports Of Boko Haram by sammiestar: 10:55am On Nov 22, 2014
Speaking at the opening of the meeting of Nigeria’s Honorary International Investment Council (HIIC) on Friday. President Goodluck Jonathan assured the gathering that the Armed Forces and security agencies were making steady gains in recovering areas recently taken by
Boko Haram according to Vanguardngr.

He Said: “We are improving on security. For about a week now there have been no reports of Boko Haram seizing more territories. Rather, we are steadily pushing them back. The impression being created by sections of the media that the situation is worsening is not true. I can assure you that it will never get worse,”

He also told the council headed by Baroness Lynda Chalker of his willingness to carry on for another four years, he said:
“As you already know, I have indicated my willingness to carry on for another four years if I am given the opportunity so that we can carry forward some of the reforms we have been talking about,”

About transportation infrastru-cture, improvement of local content in Nigeria’s oil industry, economic growth, job creation and national security. The president said:

“We cannot move the economy forward without good infrastructure. We have been working very hard in that area. We have improved our road network significantly. In the next three to four years, we should be able to resurface almost all federal roads in the country and begin new ones.“We are improving our airport terminals and aviation security. Reforms are also ongoing at our ports to drastically reduce the time required for import clearance formalities.“In the rail sector, we may require private sector funds to quicken the pace of development. Our goal is to link all state capitals by rail. It may not be an objective that can be achieved by a single administration, but we want to lay a solid foundation that others can build on.“We are also promoting the increase of local content in our oil industry, because that is the only way in which our people will benefit more from the industry and begin to see themselves as true stakeholders who need to protect and help in the development of our oil and gas resources,”

Religion / That CAN Attack On Okotie By Felicia Daniels by sammiestar: 2:00pm On Nov 03, 2014
Can a man take fire in his bosom and not get burnt? – Proverbs 6: 27 Rev. Chris Okotie’s admonishment to Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor to resign his post as President of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, consequent upon the dust being raised by the
involvement of his jet in the $9.3 million arms deal scandal, drew numerous reactions across the media spectrum.

One of those responses was an insulting, if not irrational press release from the stable of CAN. But as is characteristic of Nigeria, in a few weeks, this arms deal saga will become history. Our Government officials know this fact, so all they have to do is weather the storm for a while, and allow other headline news beat this arm scandal to the back burner.

Now, back to the illogic of CAN’s reckless attack on Rev. Okotie. Did we in all honesty expect the Federal Government to confess that Pastor Oritsejafor was privy to the botched black market arms deal? ‘On paper’, he is not in government, not a security or armed forces official or contractor, not an official arms dealer. So, with elections round the corner, and the on-going Boko Haram fiasco, it would be superfluous for them to bury themselvesunder the pile of political rubble by admitting that this was a covert gun-running operation gone-sour in a foreign land!

One view which hangs a big question mark on the entire affair is; how do you meet the nation’s demand for arms to combat a fierce enemy like Boko Haram; even on an ad-hoc basis with $9.3 million; a need for which the government seeks a loan of $1 billion? How did they intend to transport the $9.3 millionarms back with a commercial plane licensed for evangelism; an aircraft which lacks adequate facilities for the nature and weight of such cargo? Indeed, thebig questionsCAN ought to answer instead of launching an audacious assault on Rev. Okotie’s private life.

The bad press generated by Pastor Ayo’s connection with the deal becomes an issue because this is not the first time a Christian leaders name will be mentioned in sinister circumstance. The rumour mill is always rife with stories of clergymen who visit Aso Rock and state houses across the nation, apparently under the auspices of CAN or PFN, to represent the Christian community, only to return with their personal treasure chests filled with booty. Their deal? They promise to mobilise support in the church for political aspirants who have serially raped our economy.

Another thing that makes the allegation difficult to shake-off is the fact that government insults our intelligence by expecting us to accept their profuse explanations without questioning the logic of it. We are too naïve of governmental operations, and therefore, not supposed to entertain any intellectual permutations on matters that are too lofty for us; after all, we are Nigerians. We are used to accepting their propaganda doctrines; no questions asked-so why is this different? We also have to wonder; since when did Doyin Okupe and Femi Fani-Kayode, two well-known political bulldogs become so polite in defending their benefactors without recourse to name-calling? It all just has an unsettling feel about it.

Rev. Okotie is a prominent Nigerian citizen who has the right to speak based on his pedigree as one leader in the nation with untainted conscience. He did not present himself a spokesperson of Christians in Nigeria. Besides, as a leading Pastor, it is proper for him to speak up on a matter regarding the faith, rather than entertain the same silence and acquiesance that is the norm in Nigeria’s perfidious political landscape.

CAN on its part should have known that Rev. Okotie has no need to disparage Pastor Oristejafor for cheap popularity, especially as he is known as a major contributor to CAN and the PFN. He is also quite close to Pastor Ayo. But friendship and respect should not become hindrances to offering truth in the face of embarrassment that CAN found itself under Pastor Ayo’s leadership. Gone are the days when Christians were expected to be timid dullards with undue worship of their Pastors; who are not capable of logical reasoning in engaging their leaders on issues affecting their lives, and would just accept an argument because it was proffered by an exalted being. CAN is an administrative vehicle which is constituted to represent the Christian family, and not pitch camp with personalities for sentimental reasons.

Today, most Christian leaders have assumed a dimension akin to the Pharisees and Sadducee’s of Biblical times who conferred honours of superintendence upon themselves. They don’t necessarily speak for Nigerian Christians as their position on this Oritsejafor’s issue shows. That is why the organization which question Rev. Okotie’s Christianity is guilty itself of violating scripture.

Pastor Oritsejafor’s romance with President Jonathan is not because he is a kinsman; it is also not because he is the Pastor of Word of Life Bible Church, WOLBC. The basis of the relationship is because at the twilight of his life, he is President of CAN and Jonathan the President of the country. Jonathan’s ascent to the helm of affairs appeared to be divine and Oritsejafor sees it as an opportunity to jaw—jaw with the President, by adopting him as a spiritual son, an arrangement that has immensely benefited him- How appropriate!

His close and unsettling public display of links with President Jonathan makes the allegations rife. If the deal hadn’t been exposed, how could South Africa’s governmenthave been be sure that the purchase was not being made by insurgents, militants or even Boko Haram, especially in the light of President Jonathan’s claim that there are

Boko Haram apologists in his Government. With the closeness of the 2015 general elections and the several reports of large caches of firearms being ferried across different parts of the country, Rev. Okotie’s concern is timely. If a dissident decides to be mischievous, he could fan the flame of religious fire by claiming that this is evidence of a call to arms by the Christian organization. Then, the already endangered lives of our brethren up north may just have gotten worse.

CAN is not adept at the intricacies of this complex insurgency politics, it shouldn’t entangle itself in a web it cannot extricate itself from. But again, at a time like this, a divorce between Oritsejafor and Jonathan is not a very good contingency plan, so even if there is something to hide, CAN may see itself as better off keeping it under wraps, which is the better of two evils.

World-over Christianity and clergymen are already earning a very dismal reputation for perpetrating all manner of atrocities in the name of God; from extortion, deception and manipulation, tax evasion and misappropriation, child molestation, assault and battery; the list is endless. This episode could add to that growing list of discredited clergy. That seemed to underscore Rev. Okotie’s challenge for Pastor Ayo to resign and restore his credibility. Nature has a way of correcting imbalances, which, no matter how well crafted, never go unpunished. When reference to the matter is made in future, CAN cannot be left out of it, because perception is stronger than reality. It is a stigma the orgnisation will always carry for a long time to come.

Nairaland / General / Liverpool Manager May Sell Mario Balotelli In January by sammiestar: 1:03pm On Oct 24, 2014
According to the Telegraph,
Liverpool manager may sell Mario
Balotelli in January. Brendan Rogers
said when he signed Balotelli in the
summer transfer window that he
would offload the striker if his
signing did not produce positive
results.
Mario Balotelli has only scored one
goal in his 10 appearances so far
this season, Brendan Rodgers will
over the next two months assess if
the risk taken is worth it.
Another off-the-field incidence
came up on Thursday when it was
claimed he had threatened a woman
after she allegedly took photographs
of his Ferrari car while he was
visiting his mother in Manchester.
Spokesman for Greater Manchester
Police said:
“We are investigating a report of
threatening behaviour following an
incident in Pewsey Road,
Wythenshawe. Officers will be
speaking to all concerned in due
course.”
When asked about a possible
January sale of Balotelli,Rogers
said:
“We brought in the player to give him
a chance, and give him every
chance,” Rodgers said. “At this
moment in time of course he hasn’t
scored the goals we would like or
want. We are having to give him that
opportunity. At this moment in time,
it’ll be working with the players that
we have and he is one of them. It’s
not just about improving him but
improving all the players. And we
will see come January what the
team needs.”

Nairaland / General / Chinese Firms Exporting ‘torture Devices’ To Africa In Higher Frequency by sammiestar: 12:51pm On Oct 24, 2014
Acorrding to Sahara
Reporters ,Amnesty International,
the human-rights watchdog
organization, in collaboration with
the Omega Research Foundation, a
British organization focused on
studying the international use and
distribution of law-enforcement
equipment on Tuesday made claims
that Chinese
companies are now massively
exporting torture equipment to
Africa.
According to the report, over 130
Chinese firms are involved in
manufacturing and selling weighted
cuffs, neck cuffs, electric shock
batons, restraint chairs, spike
batons, and more torture devices.
AP
Amnesty International described the
act as a “worrying trade”, in which
the “inherently abusive”
aforementioned instruments are
being shipped to Africa.
China is known for its use of torture
to extract confessions from
suspects and according to Amnesty,
some of its home-made equipment
like projectile stun guns and
handcuffs are considered standard
police issue and “can have a
legitimate use in law enforcement if
used correctly and in line with
international standards for law
enforcement.”
EPA
Amnesty also stated that the country
also specializes in selling torture
instruments to police departments in
countries with miserable human
rights records.
So far, Liberia, Uganda, and
Madagascar are among the
countries that have used the Chinese
services to import such torture
equipment to their nations.
According to Xinhua, China’s state
news outlet, three officers and four
security personnel from Harbin,
China were convicted of torturing
and killing one of seven suspects to
get confessions this week alone.
Although there has been a huge
increase (28 a decade ago, now
130) in the number of Chinese
companies that are involved in the
manufacturing of torture
instruments, they have not upped
protocols to “ensure that the exports
do not end up in the wrong hands,”
says Amnesty. “Instead, most of the
equipment is going to African
countries where the rule of law is
poor and where the potential for
abuse is high, the human rights
advocacy organization says.

Nairaland / General / Why Muhammadu Buhari Does Not Belong In Our Future, By Olúfémi Táíwò by sammiestar: 12:38pm On Oct 24, 2014
I recently had a phone conversation
with a dear compatriot who just
shared with me a desire to support
Muhammadu Buhari for president,
come 2015 elections. The
conversation we had convinced me
to put down these thoughts that have
been
with me for quite some time now.
Let me start by saying that it is a
sign of how much military rule
destroyed our sense of what is right
and our relationship to history that
dictators like Buhari and Ibrahim
Babangida are still respected
figures in our public life. But that is
a topic for another day.
Here are my reasons why no one
who is exercised by Nigeria’s and,
by extension, Africa’s future, as well
as that of African-descended
peoples everywhere, must actively
campaign against the likes of Buhari
and, while we are at it, Abubakar
Atiku, when it comes to our future.
Buhari is an unrepentant,
unapologetic, unreconstructed
dictator in whom I am yet to see the
requisite democratic temperament
beyond persistently presenting
himself for elections. In case
Nigerians need any reminder—that
we do is itself a scandal—this was
the man who, with Tunde Idiagbon,
presided over a military regime that
dehumanized Nigerians in the name
of some spurious “War Against
Indiscipline”. It was a regime under
whose jackboots the dignity of many
Nigerian women was assaulted at
airports and other points of entry
with humiliating body cavity
searches in the name of some crazy
war on drug trafficking. It is
interesting that while the country
that manufactured the original war
on drugs is beating itself up on its
stupidity, we are about to honour the
man who led a regime that
perpetrated indignities on Nigerians
in the name of that same war! Is it
any wonder that we don’t get any
respect from the rest of the world?
As if the indignities were not enough
by themselves, this was a man who
signed execution warrants for three
young Nigerians convicted of drug
trafficking under a law that also
recognized their right to appeal their
conviction to a higher court. They
were executed while their appeal
had not, repeat not concluded. I do
not recall that under military rule,
the suspension of the constitution
included the suspension of the
doctrine of the presumption of
innocence of the accused until such
a person is convicted. Might I add
that that conviction is not final until
all appeals have been concluded. In
other words, Buhari and the goons
he led murdered three young
Nigerians who were still presumed
innocent according to our legal
system, even under military rule. In
a decent society—and ours is not a
decent society—Buhari will be in the
dock answering charges for his
shameful and illegal behavior. But
we are such amnesiacs; we think he
could and should be president.
Meanwhile, his so-called war on
corruption for which everyone
pretends to celebrate him was not a
model of consistency. Neither was
the ethnicity-inflected justice that
his tribunals meted out to erring
politicians. For me, the matter of
the emir’s suitcases pales into
insignificance against the
ethnically-modulated pattern of
(in)justice in the trials of so-called
corrupt public officials of the
Second Republic. I am sure that not
many Nigerians now recall the first
public office-holder jailed for
corruption by the Buhari\Idiagbon
regime. That would be Olabisi
Onabanjo, the first civilian governor
of Ogun State. I recall telling people
then that there was something wrong
with that picture; I still think there
is. It probably was one reason why
Fela wondered why Shehu Shagari
was not put on trial but governors
and other office-holders were. In his
inimitable parlance: “Driver get
accident; na conductor you charge
to court”. The Niger State governor
who was found with six million
naira overseas did not quickly come
up for trial; neither did the Kano
State governor for whom there was
no trouble with banking government
money in government house. Their
trials would all come later.
More noteworthy was the fact that
no, repeat, no Unity Party of Nigeria
(UPN) governor, not Ambrose Alli,
not Bola Ige, not Onabanjo, was
convicted of personal enrichment;
they were guilty of using
government funds to enrich their
parties. Yet, they were the first to be
sent to jail! The irony is completely
lost on Buhari’s apologists when
they proclaim his personal
incorruptibility; a similar claim
could be made of the UPN governors
he was eager to imprison for
presiding over a corrupt system.
Please don’t tell me about his
stewardship of the Petroleum Trust
Fund (PTF). First, anyone who was
associated with the Abacha regime
does not deserve any place in
Nigeria’s public life and, definitely,
in Nigeria’s future. In the second
place, PTF, EFCC, ICPC, and the
innumerable extra-judicial organs
that litter the Nigerian political
landscape are relics of failure rather
than icons of administrative genius.
Saudi Arabia, Mexico, the Gulf
States did not need a PTF to put
their oil windfall into proper
financial institutions to ensure that
their oil was turned from income
into wealth. Does PTF have such a
record? When did it become a sign
of good economic management that
you sit on accumulated money while
your economy contracts? So, if part
of what recommends Buhari for
president is his stewardship of the
PTF as an organ of development, it
must be that amnesia is even less a
problem than economic illiteracy
that borders on collective idiocy.
Beyond his military service, I do not
see any evidence that Buhari is
interested in the project called
Nigeria beyond the insistence of the
dominant elite in the northern part of
the country that their sons must be
at Nigeria’s helm. I do not say this
lightly and I say it in spite of the
risk of being labelled. I am not
worried about being labelled. He
has never publicly opposed Sharia
and that is one of the most toxic
features of contemporary Nigerian
polity and politics. No politician who
is ambivalent about Sharia can be
part of a salubrious future for a
country like Nigeria. Incidentally, he
could borrow a leaf from Mahathir
Mohammed on this score. But
Nigerian Islam and contemporary
Christianity are not about Reason or
ideas. His Congress for Progressive
Change (CPC) definitely did not
acquit itself well after the last
presidential elections and his
ominous wait to condemn the
violence still rankles. Where is the
evidence of any change on his part
on this score?
Finally, it is a matter for great pity
that the All Progressive Congress
(APC) has proven itself to be more
interested in power than in making a
country that we all can be proud of.
No thanks to its unthinking addiction
to winning power and its even
greater thoughtlessness in believing
that it can do so by gathering the
rejects of the ruling party, the APC
can only deepen the cynicism and
apathy of the electorate. It is a
disgrace that the best the party that
styles itself ‘progressive’ can do is
to tout two retreads as its change
agents when what the country needs
are spanking new treads! If the
permutation is to win in the north, I
wish them luck. But it is the surest
path to giving Goodluck Jonathan a
second-term he does not deserve
but will get because the other party
has not shown itself to be any
different from the PDP. Jonathan did
not win the north that last time
around; neither does he need it this
time. APC can still withdraw from
this path to self-destruction. Buhari
is part of a past well let alone. Only
the future should matter and nothing
about him speaks to this future.

Phones / Mobile Phone Charger That Uses Human Blood To Charge A Device by sammiestar: 11:42am On Oct 23, 2014
Naomi, a student has come up with
a non-conventional device, which
sounds somewhat weird once you
get the details.
Naomi has created a mobile phone
charger that uses human blood to
charge a device. So, if you want to
use her technology, all you need is
'an arm with a vein', reports
Cosmopolitan magazine.
The device comes with a line that is
known as 'Energy Addicts'. It has
three parts - the Blinker, the E-
pulse, and the Blood Bridge. Each
part functions to extract energy from
different parts of the body. For
example, the Blinker extracts
energy from from the eyelids, the E-
pulse Conductor extracts from
spinal cord nerves, and the Blood
Bridge from lower-arm blood flow,
says the magazine.
Naomi told the magazine that she
doesn't want the device to be mass
produced. She created it so that
people can ponder over the
relationship between human bodies
and technology.
Naomi is not the first person to use
a human body's energy as a source
of power. Earlier this year, a
thermoelectric bracelet was
released that had the ability to turn
body heat into electricity.
Scary or what? Let me know what
you think. Leave us a comment.

What makes Americans afraid?

According to the Chapman
University, the number one fear in
America today is not Muslim
terrorists or Russian imperialism or
Ebola outbreak. it's...walking alone
at night.

The top five things Americans fear
the most are:
1-Walking alone at night
2-Becoming the victim of identity
theft
3-Safety on the internet
4-Being the victim of a mass/
random shooting
5-Public speaking

Dr. Christopher Bader (leader of the
team effort) said:

“What initially lead us into this line
of research was our desire to
capture this information on a year-
over-year basis so we can draw
comparisons with what items are
increasing in fear as well as
decreasing,”

He further said:

“We learned through this initial
survey that we had to phrase the
questions according to fears vs.
concerns to capture the information
correctly, so that is how we present
it,”

The team also came up with,
The top five things Americans worry
or are concerned about are:

1-Having identity stolen on the
internet
2-Corporate surveillance of internet
activity
