#NigeriaUNGA17: STATEMENT DELIVERED BY HIS EXCELLENCY MUHAMMADU BUHARI, PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA AT THE GENERAL DEBATE OF THE 72ND SESSION OF UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY, IN NEW YORK, ON TUESDAY, 19 SEPTEMBER 2017 Mr. President, Fellow Heads of State and Government, Mr. Secretary-General, Distinguished Delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen, On behalf of my country, Nigeria, I congratulate you Mr. President on your election and Mr. Gutteres on his first General Assembly outing as our Secretary-General. I assure you both of my country’s solidarity and cooperation. You will indeed need the cooperation of all member States as we are meeting during extra-ordinarily troubled and dangerous times. Let me also thank former Secretary-General Mr. Ban ki Moon for his service to the United Nations and wish him peaceful retirement. Mr. President, The previous year has witnessed many far-reaching developments. Some of the most significant events include the Iran Nuclear Deal, the Paris Climate Change Agreement and, of grave concern, the North Korean nuclear crisis. A widow, Mrs. Stella Ogheneovo, who was allegedly forced to drink the water used to wash her dead husband’s corpse by relatives of the deceased to prove her innocence about the death of her husband, Captain Johnbull Ogheneovo, has alerted police authorities over her plight. Her Story In the petition, Mrs Ogheneovo alleged that when her husband died, she was invited by her husband’s relations to their family house at Emevor village and was forced to disclose her husband’s assets, property, bank details including information about the company where her husband worked before his sudden death. She added that her mobile phone was also seized. Stating that she was legally married to her late husband and the marriage was blessed with five children, the widow narrated that on the day her husband died, she received a call from her husband’s office that he had slumped and had been taken to the hospital. She disclosed that during the funeral rites which commenced with a service of songs on the 29th June 2017, a member of her husband’s family, a Reverend Father with the Roman Catholic Church (name withheld) came with thugs to harass and intimidate her and her children adding that she was given over 30 strokes of the cane by the thugs. President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to deliver a paper at the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 72). Consequently, the President will depart Abuja tomorrow (Sunday) for New York, to join other world leaders in the General Debate at the conference. A statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina stated that the high point of the President’s visit will be his participation in the General Debate during which he will deliver the country’s National Statement. VICE President Yemi Osinbajo, yesterday in Ondo State declared that the country’s oil will no longer be profitable in no distant future. He spoke during the Second National Council on Niger Delta, NCND, meeting held in Akure. Painting a gloomy future of oil in the Niger Delta area of the country, the Vice President said; “Many countries are getting alternatives to oil, the development which would make the resource unprofitable in a few years. Osinbajo pointed out that the United States of America, USA, which is the largest importer of Nigeria’s crude oil, would no longer need the commodity because of alternatives for oil already discovered. Also, he stressed that Asian countries are in a desperate search for alternative to oil. According to him Japan, China and other industrialised countries have enough electric cars and are having more electric charging points than filling stations. President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Kaduna inaugurated Africa’s biggest hatchery and feed mill constructed by Olam Grains at the cost of over 150 million dollars. Buhari, who inaugurated the company, had his speech read by Minister of Agriculture, Dr Audu Ogbeh. He described Olam as one of the largest agro-based companies in Africa and the biggest poultry investment in Nigeria. “We participated in the event because it is clear evidence that economic growth is taking place especially in the agricultural sector,” he said. “It is in this connection that we must be able to feed ourselves from what we grow and grow what we eat before we can comfortably turn our attention to many other key concepts of our daily life.’’ The aim, he said, was to ensure that Nigerians have access to food, better life, and better hope for their future. According to him, the inauguration of the company is a testimony that growth is serious and lasting growth is taking place in the economy. The president stressed that with Nigeria exiting recession, the country has become a safe haven for investors. PRESIDENT Nana Addo Kufuor, of Ghana Tuesday told President Muhammadu Buhari that West African leaders were worried and anxious when he was on medical vacation in London, the United Kingdom. President Kufour, who paid his Nigeria counterpart, President Buhari a friendly visit at the Presidential Villa, Abuja said he came to see for himself and was glad to know that “our big brother in Nigeria is well”. Speaking to the State House correspondents shortly after meeting with Buhari, the Ghanaian leader disclosed that it was also an opportunity he seized to discuss some bilateral issues. He said, “I came from Accra today to come and visit my senior brother, President Muhammadu Buhari. SCORES of youths were allegedly injured, yesterday, as gunmen suspected to be soldiers, who came in Hilux Pick-up vans, allegedly attacked the Umuahia country home of leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The IPOB claimed, last night, that five people were killed and about 30 others were injured in the attack. However, videos of the clash showing clubs and stone-wielding youths, who clashed with the troop, indicated that scores were injured. One of the youths, who was shot on his right thigh was seen battling for life as his colleagues administered first aid. IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, told Vanguard that the attackers wore army and police uniforms and drove into the palace of the traditional ruler of Afaraukwu, who is the father of Nnamdi Kanu and started shooting people. He said in a statement: “We did not clash with anybody or group. The attackers wore Nigerian soldiers and Nigeria Police uniforms and came to kill our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in his compound at Afaraukwu, Umuahia and started shooting sporadically and killed five people and up to 30 other people had bullet wounds. After attacking our people, they drove off. They came in five Hilux vans.” Meanwhile one of the allegedly wounded IPOB members was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, where doctors were battling to save his live. A doctor on duty at the emergency unit of the hospital said the IPOB member sustained gunshot injury at “the thigh region.” We neither attacked nor killed anyone — Army However, a statement signed by Major Oyegoke Gbadamosi, Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade Nigerian Army said: “The attention of 14 Brigade Nigerian Army, has been drawn to fictitious news going round especially on the social media that troops have invaded the home of Nnamdi Kanu and killed three persons. “This is far from the truth. Rather, it was a group of suspected IPOB militants that blocked the road against troops of 145 Battalion while on show of force along FMC-World Bank Road in Umuahia town, Abia State at about 6.00-6.30pm, today (yesterday). “They insisted that the military vehicles would not pass and started pelting the soldiers with stones and broken bottles to the point of injuring an innocent female passerby and a soldier, Corporal Kolawole Mathew. “The troops fired warning shots in the air and the hoodlums dispersed. No life was lost. “Therefore, the public are kindly enjoined to disregard the rumours going round and the fictitious photographs of purported victims of attack. “Both the soldier and the innocent female passerby have been evacuated to the unit’s Medical Inspection Room and are receiving treatment. “We would like to use this opportunity to warn mischief makers threatening the peace and security of the country through falsehood such as above.
