please can you stop spreading this bullshit claims already? In igala language the term for slave is Ójó pronounced (Oh joh). This refers to individuals captured in wars or treaded during pre colonial times. Although that term is now considered as archaic due to its association with transatlantic slave trade. But that is the word for Slave in ancient igala during the pre colonial times. In contemporary usage, phrases like ọde eni ( servant) or ọme ọni ( dependant) might be preferred for neutrality. igala oral traditions sometimes reference slavery in proverbs : Ójó léké égba ògwu ( A Slave who survives becomed a storyteller) As for the term for "OUTCAST" or "SOCIALLY OSTRACIZED PERSON" is Ọ̀mè-ọ̀chè . There are some other contextual variations like Ọ̀me-èfu, ọ̀me-àtọ and Ọ̀me-ọlè. Go and ask any igala person and they will educate you more on this. So your claims that onigbo or igbo means slaves in igala is wrong and total bullshit! Anyone who says that should be regarded as a quark and should be ignored because he/she is wrong based on standard igala language and historical- linguistic evidence, and I'm going to Tell you why As previously established, Ójó is the universally accepted igala word for Slave across dialects ( Idah, Ankpa, Dekina etc) . Onigbo in igala means Igbo person (ONI = person, IGBO= igbo ethnic group). It is not synonymous with slave, it's an ethnic identifier just as Onèja means Hausa person. Possible confusion or misinterpretation During the trans Saharan/Atlantic slave trade, some Igbo people were enslaved and sold through igala middlemen (e.g at the Aboh and Idah slave markets). so overtime some outsiders or even locals might have conflated the ethnic term Onigbo with slavery due to this history . And if we look at academic sources, John Idakwoji's igala-English lexicon confirms that Ójó is the correct term in igala linguistics. And Modern igala communities reject Onigbo as meaning slavery because it's an ethnic libel. So while some Igbo people were sold as slaves, their ethnic name ≠ the word for Slavery. HERE ARE DIRECT QUOTES FROM HISTORICAL TEXTS, PROVERBS, SCHOLARLY SOURCES That disproves the claims that igbo/Onigbo means slaves in igala and affirms that Ójó is the correct term. "THE igala KINGDOM" (1972) by J.S Boston: "The igala referes to slaves generally as Ójó, whether captured or through war, trade or punishment. The term Onigbo was preserved solely for Igbo neighbours not servitude" "THE NIGERIAN HINTERLAND SLAVE TRADE" (1989) by A.J.N Tremeane: "At the Idah slave markets, records show that slaves were called Ójó, regardless of ethnicity, the term Igbo appears only to describe captives of igbo origin, not as synonym for slavery Here are also proverbs in igala Ójó léké égba ògwu, Òméja léké égba ògwu ( A Slave who survives becomes a storyteller, a free person who survives becomes a storyteller) Átá y'Ójó kome y'ọmeja (The king's slave and the king's freeborn are not equal) Also If you check the igala-English lexicon dictionary (2015) by John Idawoji: Ójó: n, Slave, servant≠ Onigbo(n, Igbo person) A GRAMMAR OF igala(2020) by E.J Alagoa "No lexical or archival evidence supports "Onigbo" as slave in igala. This conflation likely stems from 19th century slave trade narratives misinterpreting ethnic labels" This whole misinformation likely stems from post ethnic stigma or interethnic tensions, but linguistic rigor and historical records dispel it. Go read those books I referenced and cure your ignorance. There's an igala dictionary, look for it also. Ask any igala person whether what I wrote here is bullshit or not. Not even a single igala person would agree with you on your fake and quark theories.
I will respond to this here and now [for the last time ever]. First off, I'm ONLY responding to your post because you gave some book references here which I will go over in detail by ordering for some of the books. I DON'T need to ask any igala person the meaning of "slave." The word "slave" in modern igala language usage means ADU OJO. I've known about that since the early 1990s [due to my interactions with igala acquaintances in my quest to understand how igala came to be a Yoruboid language with about 65% mutual intelligibility with the mainstream Yoruba language]. You totally went off tangent and blindly rushed through my post on the other page skipping right over the MAJOR or KEY points I made and you started saying incorrectly that I refered to slave as "Igbo" which is highly incorrect. "Igbo" simply refers to BUSH or FOREST (In Yoruba language or igala being a Yoruboid language) and (when used to describe a group of people centuries ago in the days of slave raidings), it refers to bush or forest dwelling people. A slave remains "Adu OJO" in igala. The MAJOR thrust of my posts was CLEARLY stated on this same thread BUT you didn't carefully NOTE the ATTACHED screenshots of the advanced history book pages which referenced the etymology of IBO (Igbo). If you had, you would have SEEN the historical reference to where the people of Asaba and Onitsha refered to the interior tribes (located to the East of river Niger and East of Onitsha) as "ONYE IBO," while the Igalas refered to the tribes as "IBO," and the Bini-Edo used "IGBON" to denote the same tribes of people East of Onitsha. That Ibo interior area was raided for slaves and the Asaba and Onitsha people pre-1900 NEVER refered to themselves as "ONYE IBO" which was used as a word of contempt for those other interior tribes. Today, due to political correctness, these condescending terms are NOT overtly used or as widely used by a lot of those groups but the Edos still refer to the Ibo as IGBON. |

What would a fair and just Nigeria look like? Will it be good enough? I am enlightened enough to know that markets make an economy and populations make markets and I will never agree to the notion that a nation of five million people can be richer than one of ten million people, all things being equal. If things like dependency ratio, HDI, internally generated revenue drive and etc were equal. This is because adults in both constituencies wake up everyday to take part in economic activities that put food on their tables and on the tables of their dependants. You can't be working everyday as a fisherman and still be working everyday as a fashion designer or a computer programmer. Therefore all work rank equal more or less and it is everybody working together that produce all what we consume. If you have crude oil, you probably don't have savannah grass that can feed cattle worth twenty billion dollars a year and etc etc. You don't have the soil and climate to produce cocoa of seven billion dollars a year etc etc. Nobody has it all together. No economic activity is mediocre Therefore, every constituency is rich if they are evenly organized. This inadvertently means their internally generated revenue will be proportional to their population size if they are evenly organized. Therefore a just Nigeria will grant representation to the federating units at the center according to igr and the representation will be subject to periodic review. A constitution that gives three senators to Lagos and Kano that are states both over twenty million in population each while giving fifteen senators to the South east of nineteen million people is not a just constitution. The only indicator of population size that can not be controverted is the internally generated revenue gotten from that population. The population of the South East can be deduced or estimated by comparing the NIN registration of Lagos to that of the south east while assuming Lagos total population is twenty three million. A just Nigeria will grant autonomy to all ethnic groups that demand it. Ijesa will be a state, Urhobo will be a state, Itsekiri will be a state, igala will be a state, Tiv, Idoma etc This was what was agreed upon at independence. It does not matter if a group is only fifty thousand in population if they were free in the nineteenth century they should be free in the twenty first and they should have representation at the center according to their GDP size as proved by their igr. They should not go from freedom to colonisation by the British then independence from the British only to go into bondage or regulated independence in Nigeria. If they can be granted autonomy as the Midwest was granted autonomy in 1963, it would be a just Nigeria. A just Nigeria will grant any government tier the right to police itself within it's boundaries. There is also nothing wrong if private security companies are allowed to arm to take part fully in the industry. People try to justify the constitution imposed on the country by the military saying states are equally represented in the Senate also in the USA but according to what I saw an American post recently on social media, the US made such a constitution because it was not yet a free society back then. Coloured people were twenty four percent of the population at independence and ninety percent were enslaved, there also were many states where women could not vote. They therefore wrote their laws to fit their needs back then. In Nigeria today, are any group slaves that should be under represented at the center? The answer is No. This is why the present constitution is unjust and unfair. We can't be slaves on our own land. In the US at independence some states had huge economies because of slave labor Then in a just and fair Nigeria, you would not man security posts of any kind in Hausa land with Yoruba people and vice versa. Whether it is the police, the DSS or the army, this should not be the case. The British did it but it was for the security of their empire. Why has Nigeria continued it? Even after Chief Awolowo ended it in 1967? If all these changes are effected, then the country would be somewhat fairer and more just except for those who think resource control is the main issue. However it will still not be a good enough country for at least the Yoruba or Hausa or Igbo because they are big enough to be using their language on their lands. The Yoruba and Hausa especially have a large population of their members in neighboring countries and their aim should be to be in the same country with them. The best way forward for the Yoruba is not a just and fair Nigeria but a totally new country where Yoruba is the national language. Yoruba is the primary language on lands in Nigeria where the total population is around 70 million and if you add lands where it is secondary language already it will be close to seventy five million people. If they seek union with Yoruba speaking lands to the West where French is the official language and they succeed, they will be close to one hundred million people and etc etc. The Igbo too can seek union with others in the same way. Ethnic groups that are smaller should also use their language on their lands, in their local parliaments and teach it in their schools while also learning in school the majority local language of any nation they align with if they choose to do that because there also is strength in numbers. English language should only be taught in schools just as it is in other countries. In conclusion a fair and just Nigeria will look good but it will not be good enough for member nations that have been building history for millennia before Nigeria materialized as they will end up as an European nation in West Africa if they are members of such a country. West Africa is not the only region on Earth to be briefly occupied by foreigners. For the Yoruba, less than sixty years of British rule should not be the determinant of their destiny. |
I find it strange and amusing when online in Nigeria it seems that the rivalry between two ethnic groups of Yoruba and Igbo are always having tribal verbal wars which shouldn't be. It seems from linguistics point of view, there are more similarities than differences. Check out the video attaches . The five closest linguistic relatives of Yoruba in Nigeria, in order of closeness, are generally considered to be: 1.Itsekiri 2. igala 3. Edo (Bini) 4. Urhobo/Isoko 5. Igbo
Say no to tribal sentiments. We can be greater than we are when we recognise that we share the same forefathers or foremothers |
LZAA:dey play my fans |
Enugu rangers need to come and debunk this nonsense quickly The annoying part of all these is that the player himself is from Benue, a state where igala igbos reside To make matters worse Davidson Owumi was in charge of Rangers during this period so this nonsense would never have taken place This is just a bunch of lies Smh |
owobokiri:Rangers has a long history of non-Igbos who were starts in the club: Emmanuel Okala (legendary goalkeeper of the 70s Rangers who won many trophies, who is an igala from Kogi state). His late brother Patrick as well. Adokiye Amiesimaka (the most famous non-Igbo to play for Rangers). Later became Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. Dotun Alatishe Davidson Owumi (who later became the team's GM for many years) Jude Agada Taiwo Oloyode Kazeem Ogunleye Godwin Obaje (their current striker) Ghanaians like the goalkeepers Nana Bonsu who was instrumental to their 2016 title run Moses Simon is very daft. He is suffering from diminishing returns and is trying to stay relevant. Anything and anybody is trying to buy relevance and political capital by demeaning the Igbos. Nonsense! |

A country like Brazil, you will see 2 mixed ( or 1 black and mixed parent) giving birth to 4 children, some whites, black and mixed....Very interesting country. Now on Olise, the Ukwuani people who are: 70% Edo 28% igala 2%. Across the Niger especially Abbi( has the 1st 2 tribes as well) has STRONG bonds with their Urhobo & Isoko BROTHERS, including those at the Central part, Orogun. Olise is an EDO word borrowed by those across the Niger especially with some ANIOMA/ Eze Chime people in Onitsha, Oguta, Ohafia( one Ohafia guy said they are not EDO people but from Ika, LOL), some Enugu areas too apart from returnees after the transatlantic era who remembered their way home. Olise is from the gods of ANIOMA people ie ORISHA( Variant of the name: Olisa, Orise/ Oritse etc).....Their other gods: Olokun, Ogun, Idigun etc( called in their own languages) |
unite4real:Sorry I've checked it, Ugbede is actually an igala name |
Jeje247:Not all idomas are from igala o, just few ...and they can be traced with their surnames and settlement ...in idoma land today |
ASArevivalist1:Idomas migrated from igala |
lawani:From your story, there is proof that you are not an ordinary person but someone that has gained knowledge from academic training. Now, seeing you base proof of population on the number of Ijaw people, Urhobo, igala, Ibibios you have personally seen is very shocking to me. My long message that you responded to ordinarily should have discouraged this line of thought but no, you came back with more absurdity. But lemme indulge you. I have seen and met more Idoma people than I have meet Ibibio people despite the fact I am from the South-South but live in the South-West. By your logic, should I conclude that Idoma people are more than Ibibios? I see you are even comparing Urhobo to Ijaws. I am actually tired. Thank you. But lemme tell you. You seeing Ibibios may not be unconnected to them popularly doing menial jobs outside their area - like house help, sales girls, cooking and all that. Lemme go to your southwest. Ijaws are not just in your southwest. They don't reside in the southwest like the few Ibibios you said you have seen, in some, Ijaws are actually part of the structure of the state. They are aborigines in Ondo State with their local government and kingdoms. That is one state out of the six. In Lagos, you don't just see Ijaws like you see Ibibios one or two at a place scattered. There are actually concentration of Ijaw areas. I mean almost full communities of Ijaws concentrated at a place, from around Ikorodu, to Èbúté Mẹta axis, to Ojo, Badagry etc. Then in Ogun State, the same thing. They may not be so much in Osun State and Ekiti like they are fully concentrated elsewhere. So your basis for claiming Ibibio or Urhobo may be more than Ijaw is still faulty. Are you aware that the Ijaw kingdom of Bille people are part of the structure of Adamawa state. Like Ijaw people who are indigenes of Adamawa. Again, the only and official source of population data in Nigeria is the National Population Commission, and their data from the 2006 census makes Ijaw the fourth largest ethnic group in Nigeria. Until there is another record from them, there is nothing you can do even if your feelings tell you otherwise |
lawani:That is correct. I was only trying to correct your impression that the Yoruba should have the upper hand because of census figures or the location of Nigerian-owned institutions. That is all. |
ositadima1:The figure for the SE also includes Yoruba, Hausa, Ijaw, igala and all others. The people on your land are your people and Nigeria is a federal republic, a union of states |
ReubenE:Why people don't agree with all this is you can hardly meet a Nigerian who has met more Ijaw than Akwa cross people or more Ijaw than Urhobo people and etc Which big city in Nigeria is under Ijaw control? I have never met an Ijaw person in Osun state. I have met maybe three Ijaws in total. One random student in OAU whose name I can't remember. He was my senior. One young man from Bayelsa who was a student at a private poly in Ife and a lady I met in 2001 or so when I was on IT in Owerri. Compare igala. I have met 4 Igalas. One was my classmate at OAU, one a bus driver in Ilesa, one a fruit vendor in Lagos, one worked with me in Lekki. I think one MOPOL posted to the company I was at in Lekki is also igala making five. There was also another that was our guard for a while in Ilesa, from his language he would be igala making six |
sharone21:Look no one has done any damage to Obi's career it is your hatred that is speaking. I am talking to you as a person no reference is made to Obi at all. This is a clear indication that you are not Anioma. You are trying to distort history. The concept Idu was not coined by a British historian that is where your lies have caught you out. Again the British did population census based on ethnicity on a regional basis and not based on an area the term Anioma existed when midwest was created this is where your lies have found you out. The British themselves classed the inhabitants of the Anioma area at that time as Western Igbos. So my Bini friend slow down when you want to lie. |
Irony1:Lol Northcote Thomas Wrote in his book,(page 38)that when the Oba of Idu joins his ancestors, every male from Benin to River Niger (Ohimi) shaves their head in respect. Now,shaving of head at the death of a monarch is a culture we hold dear in most communities within the south-south region and some parts of south-west. Nobody ever shaves their head for an oppressor,or a conqueror or a usurper or an imposed king. All this land from Benin to river niger, was the land of the Benin king originally, the only other tribe who did come into this space were the igala people, their early presence is so true, because the Onitsha people (15th century)on their flight to their present land, were ferried by igala fishermen who they met at the banks of the Niger;not Igbo or Yoruba men. The other group where the Y group who has a shared community with the Benin group on the now Odiani side. That igala incursion and fishing expedition on the Ohimi was deemed sacrilegious as the Ohimi was the property of the Oba of Benin and was a deeply spiritual side now turned fishing pond. It was primarily for the preservation of his sacred site, that issele-uku was created as a a military outpost to monitor the igala movement and also to continue the worship of the Ohimi river with relics to back it up,relics that are still in existence till date. The story of Ezechima continues to wow me at every given time. Now remember that Ezeh-Ise the father of Ezeh-Ikhime was a prince from the palace of Oba Olua of Benin in the 14th century. It was from there that he moved to Eko-Ofun; a Benin/ife confluence town and got introduced to the worship of the Yoruba deity Orisha. It was from that moment that he picked up interest in the Y life and so named his child Ikhiwin;a term most Benin scholars has attributed to mean “A river”.(making reference to the deity which is of a water representation). But it doesn’t end there with the Y words, Ikhime on the other hand, names some of his children with clear Y names in the 15th century,to his first and last son he names;Orisha and Olugbo which are presently called Onicha and Oligbo respectively. Now it gets interesting, while Onicha as the first son,is named after the deity of his grandfather,(a move which clearly showed strength and leadership),the last child gets “Olugbo” a Y word (it carries its roots from the Ugbo dynasty of present day Ondo state, whose original home has been speculated to be from ile-ife) which can be likened to a term meaning “the King”. Later in life, the last son who get a Kingly name, gets to inherit the father after a long tussle which ended at the palace of Oba Esigie of Benin in 1505,while the First son Onicha, dies while his father was still on the throne. Tell me names don’t carry meaning!. *Copied from Prince of Issele Uku kingdom. Tell me how I know so much as a Benin person you are telling me, I, a DAUGHTER of the SOIL. Anyway, I'm PROUD to be an EDO descendant! We have Obaseki ruling in IKA community. Our deities: Orisha, Olokun, Idigun, Ogun If only you knew the extent of DAMAGE you have done already to Obi's political career. Anyway, Niger Deltans( ANIOMA, IKWERRE, OGBA, ETCHIE, OPOBO, IJAWS, AKWACROSS etc) whom you have heavily insulted and trying to impose your fake, distorted histories on will give una a SHOCKER. |
sharone21:You are clearly either and Bini person pretending to be Anioma. Obviously your stats are clearly fake and concocted all to spread disinformation. But you see your format is too predictable and clearly you have failed in the plot. There has been no ethnic distribution in an area since after the 40s and it was the British that last did this and it was on a regional basis even at that time midwest was not existing. So your stats clearly is false and a concocted lie. |
Believeintruth:This is why 2023 election votes given to Obi vs what he will get in 2027 will be SHOCKING. FYI My people will not vote in anyone from across the Niger who has not significantly warned or stopped his foot soldiers from ALL the insults and distorted histories they peddled on social media and internet space including Wikipedia and Facebook. Obi has never condemned your acts but knows how to speak against other regions. Instead of us to vote in Obi or anyone with secessionist vibes, let the status quo remain. We are NOT a subgroup of you people no matter if your voices seem to outnumber ours. IKA: 85% EDO 15% igala & Y *If you say IKA is 90% EDO you are still correct. Ukwuani: 70% EDO 28% igala 2% from your place eg Abbi, even that Abbi has EDO & Igalas. |
8 sharone21:Oga let us not start this rubbish argument. Anioma is fully Igbo 💯 |
Believeintruth:Where in ANIOMA are you from? This is how you people pushed that Ukwunzu( Y) man with IdumujeUgboko mum of Royal Benin blue blood to political oblivion, now he has to rely on APC for appointments or if LUÇKY House of Assembly representing his people NOT ANIOMA people anymore. FYI: ANIOMA ABORIGINALS 70% EDO 15% igala 10% Y 5% Your people always claiming us, you are MINORITIES in our land. Even Ibusa with majority of the 5% still have Umu Eze Chime/ Edos |
JuanDeDios:they are more than them, their rivals are the ijaws. |
AlphaTaikun:You can see how that fake love facade quickly faded away after Anioma people rejected them and Ned's useless capitulation deal with Ohaneze and SE political figures. Now they will insult Anioma people more than they do Ikwere who have since rejected them. But the most disturbing is how they never ever respect other people's rights to self determination but want to control the destiny of others by swallowing them up using cultural genocide. |
AhmedPeacemaker:Southwest [1] Odo Oya State - Ilorin [2] Oyo State - Ibadan [3] Ogun State - Abeokuta [4] Lagos State - Ikeja [5] Ondo - Akure [6] Ekiti - Ado-Ekiti [7] Osun - Oshogbo Is the list above with Ilorin as the capital of Oda Oya State TRUE? It BETTER be so. However, Anioma State CANNOT be in the South East region because of the multiethnic origins of the Anioma people from Benin-Edo, Esan-Edo, Yoruba (Olukumis of Aniocha North who settled on their land first in Delta State located near the border with Esanland in Edo State), Igalas of Ebu and other igala-associated towns such as Asaba where the current Asagba of Asaba has affirmed Asaba's igala ethnic paternal ancestry from Kogi State, The vast majority of Anioma folks agree with Anioma State creation BUT have long rejected being located in the South East of Nigeria. The Federal Government of Nigeria MUST take note of these FACTS and not rush things here. Period. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Zwei84GNhA |
DomPerignon:The Asagba of Asaba HRM Azinge, SAN, already affirmed (as seen in the recent rants of the boy in the video right BELOW) the historical igala paternal ethnic origins or descent of Asaba people and it's a FACT of history that Anioma folks are of multiethnic origins from Benin- Edo, Esan-Edo, Yoruba (Olukumi) in Aniocha North, igala, Nri, etc, so I wonder where this guy called Ned Nwoko and the 4 YouTubers he recruited and paid money to relentlessly propagate weekly online disinformation get their highly IRRESPONSIBLE audacity from? There is a group photograph posted online and hear on NL which Ned took with those hired propagandist YouTubers such as the ranting boy in the video below wearing braids. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mJMC2EiHIo?si=DR82AmGxueJ9zHam |
victoryenergy:Are you sure they're more than the Fulani? Tiv? igala? Ijaw? |
