I really think they were testing the waters to see how Iran could potentially react in a real ground invasion scenario. That is, what countermeasures are in place by the Iranians, and how they can possibly overcome them.

Well, like you said, the test results turns out to mirror the actual horror and hesitation harboured by most of the generals in Pentagon who simply refused to need Trump's order of a full fledged ground invasion.
