The Port Harcourt Local Government Authority Area Security Watch and policemen have arrested about 12 suspected internet fraudsters who allegedly buried a newborn baby alive at Andoni waterfront in Eagle Island, Rivers State capital on Wednesday morning. The operation which followed a tip-off was in conjunction with the Rivers State Neighbourhood Watch. The arrest of the suspected Yahoo boys followed credible information received by the vigilante from residents who saw a group of boys conducting incantation and digging the ground by the waterfront. Chairman of PLGA Security Watch who doubles as Chief Security Officer of Eagle Island, Victor Ohaji, disclosed the incident to newsmen. He disclosed that, on getting the information, he alerted the Azikiwe Police Division in Diobi, Port Harcourt and the officials of the state neighborhood Agency. Thereafter, I immediately mobilised my men, but on getting to the spot where we were told the suspects were by the waterfront, the ‘yahoo’ boys’ had left. Ohaji, however, said on closer observation, it was discovered that the suspected ‘yahoo’ boys’ buried something at the waterfront. The CSO of Eagle Island said he directed his men to dig the ground, where they found the lifeless body of a newborn baby boy and was exhumed. He said his men, the police and neighbourhood men started coming to the area in search of the renegades, which they eventually sighted coming out of a hotel. Ohaji stated, “When we dug the place, we saw a newborn baby, a bouncing baby boy. Very fine boy that they buried. ” Immediately I called the Situation Officer of Eagle Island and informed him of our discovery so that he can relate to the Divisional Police Officer he is working with. “Immediately, the police and neighbourhood watchmen joined us. So we started going around Eagle Island to see if we could find the suspects. We even moved from one hotel to another in the area, and lo and behold, we saw them coming out from a hotel. And as soon as we highlighted from the car, they (suspects) started running. “So, we chased after them and apprehended them. There were twelve of them. So we took them to the police station and the baby.” Continuing, he said, “While we were there, the leader of this yahoo boys was shouting, ranting that his father is a Major General and that nothing will happen. “He said even if they bury full human being, nothing will happen. The boy went on ranting that his father was coming. So we handed them to the police.” Ohaji called on the Rivers State Government to assist the outfit with with vehicles and logistics to improve on the good work they are doing. “All we want is for the state to be peaceful. So the government should please assist us, ” he stated. When contacted, the spokesperson of the state Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, saying an investigation is ongoing. She stated, “Yes, we can confirm the incident. They were arrested by the police with the help of vigilantes.. ” The matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for proper investigation. ” Meanwhile, a human rights advocate and National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, Prince Wiro, described the incident as the height of wickedness and man’s inhumanity to man. Wiro stated, “We call on the police to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that the suspects are prosecuted. “We also commend the security operatives for the promoted response and support to the vigilante leading to the arrest, ” he said |

Former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last general election, Peter Obi, has made a resolute pledge to Nigerians, declaring, "I am here to stay, not in a hurry to become president." Emphasizing his unwavering commitment to the country's welfare, Obi stated that his primary concern lies in the process that brings leaders to office, rather than personal ambition. Speaking at the unveiling of a book titled "Peter Obi: Many Voices, One Perspective" in Awka, Obi expressed his conviction that he would eventually assume the presidency of Nigeria, firmly believing that his purpose transcends freeing the nation from flawed leadership solely for the benefit of the elite. Instead, his mission is to usher in positive change for all Nigerians. Emphasizing his commitment to freeing Nigeria from bad leadership, not just for the elite, but for every Nigerian, Obi said: "For three years, I was in court in Anambra to reclaim my mandate, just to challenge the process. “Many people tried to discourage me, but I said even if the entire four-year tenure elapsed for us to prove a point and correct the process, I will be fulfilled," Obi stated. “My argument is that, let’s do what is right. I always tell everyone that I will not give people money to do the wrong thing. I have been the chairman of a committee; TETFUND committee, and Prof. Yakubu Mahmud was my member. We know one another, but when he became INEC chairman, I have never met him. I told him, you are an umpire, just do what is right. “If you have the chance to do the right thing and you insist on perpetuating anarchy, then, it will consume everybody one day. I insist that we must do the right thing.” Obi emphasized the need for Nigerians to cultivate a habit of doing the right thing and warned that failure to do so would eventually affect everyone. Undeterred by sceptics, he firmly asserted his conviction of becoming the President of Nigeria. "Anyone who thinks I am on a transit is wasting his time. Let me tell you, I must be the president of this country. I am sure of that. If it is not today, it must be tomorrow," Obi declared. “Other people who want to be (president) should come and tell us what they want to do, and how to do it. This is my country, I don’t have dual citizenship. If anyone thinks I am going to run away from Nigeria, they are lying.” For the full story, and more, visit www.guardian.ng and follow Guardian Nigeria on Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter 🌐📈🔔 #PeterObi #Nigerians #Nigeria #Tinubu #Atiku #IPledgeToNigeriaMyCountry #Obidients |
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar, has called on politicians and other persons in the political environment to learn from the war in Sudan. The NSCIA, in a statement on Friday, signed by the Director of Administration, Zubairu Usman-Ugwu, recalled that Sudan was currently undergoing unrest due to rivalry between military gladiators, General Abdul Fattah al-Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (known as Hemedti), because they could not peacefully resolve their differences. It said this was uncalled for, adding that leadership was all about serving the people and not advancing personal egos and interests. It added, “As politics is over, governance should be the sole focus of stakeholders in the Nigerian project now. Under no condition should the peace of Nigeria be compromised by political actors and their impressionistic followers. We don’t have to lose peace before we appreciate it as the ordinary Sudanese are currently experiencing. We should join hands to save Sudan and save our common humanity from the catastrophe of violent conflict.” The NSCIA also appealed to the United Nations and the African Union to intervene in the crisis. |
With Opposition In Majority, Race For House Speaker Gets Tougher The dynamics in the current race for the Speaker of the House of Representatives has never been more complicated compared to previous races. For the first time since 1999, the opposition parties have a majority vote in the green chamber, enough to take a shot at producing the speaker which ordinarily was the preserve of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). By the end of the supplementary elections last week, opposition parties in the 10th House of Representatives were 182, a vote more than the statutory 181 threshold needed to elect a speaker. Although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to publish a comprehensive list of members-elect for the National Assembly, a breakdown by Civichive, which has been publishing election results as declared by INEC, shows that the APC has 175 seats while the major opposition and former ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has 118 According to Civichive, other opposition parties performed thus: Labour Party (35 seats), NNPP (19 seats), APGA (five seats), SDP and ADC (two seats each), YPP has a single seat with 3 seats still pending. On this premise, lawmakers from the seven political parties that won election into the 10th House of Representatives after an emergency meeting in Abuja stated that it was primed to contest the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 10th National Assembly. Speaking with journalists on the position of the Caucus, a member- elect from Anambra, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, stated that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria permits every elected member with the statutory right to gun for any leadership position, subject to the standing orders of the House. However, while the opposition parties set to push for a change in the order of events, the APC leadership is still engrossed in the debate on whether or not the office should be zoned Shortly after the February 25 poll, party stakeholders stepped up lobbying for the speaker position to be zoned to their area. Party leaders from North West and North Central have been making strong cases for the seat to be ceded to their zone. But what does this mean for the aspirants? Clearly they have to put their best foot forward. So far, those who have indicated interest to contest the Speakership in the Tenth NASS include but not limited to the current Deputy Speaker, Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase (Plateau APC), Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara (Borno APC and House Committee Chairman on Appropriations), chairman, House Committee on Navy, Yusuf Gadgi and the chairman, House Committee on Media and Publicity, Benjamin Kalu. Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa (Kano APC and House Majority Leader), Hon. Aminu Sani Jaji who represents Kaura Namoda/Birnin Magaji Federal Constituency of Zamfara State. So far, Wase has got endorsements from the no less than seven governors cut across party lines. For now, five APC governors are rooting for him even as they are pushing for North Central to get the position. They are Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Yahaya Bello, Dapo Abiodun, Babagana Zulum and Abdulahi Sule of Ondo, Kogi, Ogun, Borno and Nasarawa respectively. Governors of Rivers and Osun states have also backed him. Wase, according to other pundits, is banking on enjoying the sympathy of party leaders, especially governors who had prevailed on him to withdraw from the contest against Gbajabiamila during the ninth House. He withdrew from the contest, supported Gbajabiamila and thereafter emerged deputy speaker upon the intervention of the APC leadership. So for him it’s payback time. He will also leverage his experience as a lawmaker and his loyalty to the party and the current NASS leadership. Hon Yusuf Gagdi is also from the North Central and so if the zoning arrangement works for the zone he will be looked at as well. He is young and vibrant, a prospect he would believe will work in his favour. Much more, he hopes to play up his credentials as a robust lawmaker. As the currently represents Pankshin/Kanam/Kanke constituency in the 9th National Assembly, Gagdi, a first term lawmaker in the House of Representatives, set a record as the first first-term federal lawmaker to have 6 self sponsored bills assented to by the President. Two of the bills are for federal universities. The seventh bill awaits accent. While banking on his experience as a former deputy speaker of the Plateau State House of Representatives, he’ll project his ability to be the bridge between the young and the old in bringing about meaningful growth and development in the country. Hon. Doguwa, House Majority Leader who represents Doguwa Federal Constituency of Kano State never hides the fact that he wants to be a speaker as a life ambition. Though he won his re-election in the last NASS election, he will hope that the party zones the position to the North West where he is from. One of the strong contestants is Hon. Betara, a member representing Biu/Bayo/Shani Federal Constituency in Southern Borno State. He is said to enjoy the support of most returning lawmakers. He stands out as one of the most ranking and experienced lawmakers who has been in the House since 2007. Betara who has served as chairman of various committees in the House since 2007 till date would have to deal with the notion that the North East zone where he is from might not be considered for the Speaker seat should the party zone the position because the Vice President-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima is not just the zone but also from Borno State as he. Still, for these aspirants, the lure to working strongly with the opposition becomes stronger. This possibility, according to some pundits, raises the prospects of a repeat of the 2015 National Assembly leadership saga. Recall that while APC, then a young ruling party, dazed by its victory over PDP and foot dragged on how to balance the power equation among the blocs within its fold, the n-PDP led by former Senate President Sen Abubakar Bukola Saraki and a former House Speaker, Hon Yakubu Dogara, in alliance with PDP lawmakers, took control of the National Assembly leadership. Saraki and Dogara’s emergence was against the run of play at the time, considering that current Senate President Sen Ahmed Lawan and the incumbent Speaker, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila were the party’s favorites to get the positions then. But other bookmakers aver that such notion might not happen because the party would leverage on the benefit of hindsight. Also the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, whose input on the matter is the most critical, is considered a more hands on politician than his soon to be predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, to allow a repeat of the 2015 scenario. Nevertheless, pundits argue that the challenge might be the inability of the various opposition parties that will make up the 10 assembly to forge a common front. This is especially as the opposition parties seem to have different leanings. For instance, while Labour Party members might be more disposed to working with the PDP as the major opposition party, the NNPP is believed to be more pro-APC. But that is not all. The tussle within the APC poses a further threat to the party’s supremacy on the matter if not well handled. For instance, the current speaker appears to be conflicting with the position of South West governors on whom to support. But according to political commentator, Bitru Ibrahim Adamu, the bulk stops on the desk of the president elect, for whom it is imperative to have the right team to work with as “one of the fundamental factors that will determine the stability, peace and progress of the next government will largely hinge on the nature of the leadership of the National Assembly (NASS).” He added, “For the incoming government of Tinubu, the questions Nigerians and international observers would like to ask are: What is going to be the quality and character of his government? Is it going to unite or divide the already divided and tensed Nigeria? “What type of persons is he going to work with in order for him to actualise the vision and policy objectives of his administration when he is sworn in on May 29, 2023? These and more questions are what define the high expectations of Nigerians when he officially assumes office as the president of Nigeria next month. “Of course, the answer to the above questions will depend fundamentally on the quality of members of Tinubu’s team which will consist of both members of his cabinet and the leadership of NASS,” he said. Also, public analyst, Mike Obiekwe, argues that the APC would need to figure the right blend of being proactive, reflective and firm while leading the conversation on how the leadership of the 10th National Assembly emerges. “It will be very critical not just for the party but for the president elect as well because he will have the responsibility of interfacing with the lawmakers. “As for the opposition trying to produce the leadership of the chambers, as much as they have a right to, albeit in an unconventional sense with regards to Nigeria, it is critical for them not to focus only on the politics of it, but to be mindful of the situation of the country at this time,” he said. |

The United States on Wednesday congratulated Nigeria on the election of ruling party presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, while calling for calm amid accusations of voter fraud and concerns over technical glitches. Tinubu was declared the winner Tuesday of the February 25 polls in Africa’s most populous democracy. The United States congratulates the people of Nigeria, president-elect Tinubu and all the political leaders,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said. “This competitive election represents a new period for Nigerian politics and democracy,” he added. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Tinubu, the candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), won 8.8 million votes, while main opposition candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi snagged 6.9 million and 6.1 million, respectively. Price acknowledged the discontent among some Nigerians over the validity of the results, as at least one opposition figure has promised to dispute the outcome. “We understand that many Nigerians and some of the parties have expressed frustration about the manner in which the process was conducted,” he said. “Nigerians are clearly within their rights to have such concerns and should have high expectations for their electoral process,” Price said, urging political leaders to register their concerns through established legal “mechanisms.” Nigerian officials had hoped new biometric voter identification technology would make the election the cleanest yet, but malfunctions, long delays and slow results have fueled the accusations of fraud. “We call on all parties to refrain from violence or inflammatory rhetoric at this critical time,” Price said. |

Serial presidential aspirant Atiku Abubakar once again lost out in the February 25th presidential election. Fortune failed to smile at him this time around again. Atiku, since 1993, has continued to eye the presidency seat but has been unsuccessful. Running for President six times — 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, 2023 — was fraught with many of the same hurdles. He has contested six times for presidential tickets. On February 25, it was the third time he lost a presidential contest. At 76, this may be Atiku’s last attempt at having a shot at the presidency. The former Vice-President first ventured into politics in the 1980s when he campaigned for Bamanga Tukur, a former Governor of old Gongola. Here is a timeline of presidential elections and primaries that Atiku contested in and lost: 1. In 1993, he contested the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential primaries losing to Moshood Abiola and Baba Gana Kingibe. 2. He was a presidential candidate of the Action Congress in the 2007 presidential election coming in third to Umaru Yar’Adua of the PDP and Muhammadu Buhari of the ANPP. 3. He contested the presidential primaries of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2011 presidential election losing out to incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. 4. In 2014, he joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2015 presidential election and contested the presidential primaries losing to Muhammadu Buhari. 5. In 2017, he returned to the Peoples Democratic Party and was the party presidential candidate during the 2019 presidential election, again losing to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari. 6. In May 2022, he was elected as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate for the 2023 general election after he defeated Nyesom Wike, the Governor of Rivers State, in the primaries. But he lost to the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. |
