Hmm...I'm not sure I understand your point fully. Someone quoted 550k for the Explorer. You have given a quote with a difference of 100k. I didn't even mention if there would be other items in the container before the person gave the first quote. So if you are saying the cost of the container would be spread over all the contents, isn't that supposed to drive the cost lower?

Container is always more expensive to clear. For a fact, it is hard give a quote for a single vehicle in a container. Apart from this said explorer, what if other vehicles are just say 2003 where after paying duty, the money left would not up to 400k. Whereas, Terminal and shipping charges alone is around that figure and you need to pay for container deposit, and there are processes (Valuation, examination, releasing, Gate signing & Gatepass etc) before you will even think of getting anything at all. That means story will change later.

Container cost easily affect low year vehicles especially where other vehicles too are small, because there is little or no flexibility in term of negotiating duty as there are minimums you can go.

That is why I asked for other contents. I don't just give auote out of thin air, I do my calculation sir.

I just wonder why we often have significant cost variation when different agents quote for the same service here.
It is normal to have some difference but not expected to be as much as we see sometimes.

I want to believe that most of the cost component (duties,govt levies etc) should be standard rates fixed by the govt, and just the agent's service fee should vary depending on profit margin. Perhaps I may be wrong.

This is just an observation that I believe will help instill confidence in the quotes shared here...from a customer perspective.

It is a commom sense to wonder. I hope I will have enough courage some days to come to start something on this.

Yes, there are rate for each vehicle and I will advice you get the customs published tariff book if you a regular importer. This will guide you to know when you are being swindled or promised unrealistic that will fall back on you.

One, there are book values (Published Customs dollar value), Compromised value (negotiated value) and there is shortpayment (agents paying any amount they like to customs on the pretext of if it goes fine, and if not, more money). Each of the options has it pros and cons. Agents quote according to their own orentation.

No ranting. Taking one of the vehicle above for example, the 2009 model of ML350 is meanrt to pay 1m surface duty and 1.4m total. This is without Shipping and Terminal charges and other minor expenses. Now, the 2012 model is valued at $31,000. At #306/1$ exchange rate and 35% duty rate, surface come to 3.3m, minus a rebate of 20% gives 2.6m surface and total come to 3m+.

From the above, paying below 1.7m for the vehicle is shortpayment. And, it is not just duty, there are tables you must past before you can have your way. So, when you make choices, be ready for many of its consequences.

As for me, I don't believe in anything goes. What goes around comes around. Definitely!
