Politics › Re: Picture Of Oludapo Osinbajo & Aisha Buhari: What's Wrong With The Pic? by shrek4(m): 11:18am On Jan 15, 2015
Concerning the picture, does it occur to you (OP) that a call might av come thru to Her (Dolapo Osinbajo) fone at that moment? From the angle of shot, the picture doesn't show her left arm (she might be a leftie). What is ur first reaction when your fone rings? You check the caller ID ...

Or

The fone started ringing before Mrs Buhari got out of her car, but Mrs Osinbajo chose to honour Mrs Buhari by ignoring the call but to greet the latter. And after the exchange of pleasantaries, she decided to check who it was, she might as well be expecting an important call.

My point is this: We should think rationally and maybe before you start a thread like this, you shld task you brain, be creative. Don't let people think for you.

God didn't create you to ask questions like this. If this a political stunt, well you failed. Educated/learned people won't resort to condescending issues like this to me headlines.

@Seun, to be honest... Av been a member since 2008. Forget the fact that you are making money from this forum, the baseless and irresponsible topics that goes to the front page these days will make NL wack. If you want to compete with international leading fora then you should do proper background check on your mods.
NL ought to stay neutral and apolitical in this period, if you become a tool to be used by these politicians, then you name will go down in the records, for good or bad.
This is 2015, not 1995... Let's tackle issue based arguments and not some trivia BS.

Hundreds of people died in Baga(in the north, for those that aren't aware), no one is talking about this. If one or 2 of these people were related to you, you won't be talking about an irrelevant issue as this (thread). The world cries for us, but we are having a comic session, laughing at every thing that happens.

What will be ur excuse? How do u explain to the next generation that you didn't do anything to mke a positive impact? Or do you think the world ends after your demise?

****
For those that will castigate me nd this little write-up, I hand you over to God to judge you accordingly, Except I hve an ulterior motive for this nation. Yet, I won't respond to your insults/accusations. So don't bother!

Politics › New European Law May Expose Nigeria’s Corrupt Oil Deals by shrek4(op): 6:14pm On Jan 05, 2015
January 5, 2015 | Filed under: Exclusive,main story | Author: PATRICK ATUANYA

More light is set to be shed on Nigeria’s murky oil sector as a new anti-corruption rule comes into force this week in the U.K.

The UK is the first member state to implement the EU Directive on Extractive Industries, which requires detailed disclosure of a range of payments, including taxes, royalties and dividends made to governments on a country and project basis as of January 1, 2015.

Directors at UK oil and gas companies could face criminal conviction and unlimited fines if they fail to properly disclose payments made to overseas governments, under the rules, which is part of a pan-European drive for greater transparency of dealings between operators in extractive industries and foreign governments.

Other EU member states are set to follow the UK in July.

The new laws would be a welcome development in Nigeria whose NNPC is adjudged to have the poorest transparency record out of 44 national and international energy companies, according to Transparency International and Revenue Watch Institute.

Last year, the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, alleged that up to $20 billion in oil revenues were ‘missing’.

A 146 – page report by Nuhu Ribadu, the former head of the anti-corruption agency EFCC, covering the years 2002 to 2012, released in 2013 concluded that oil majors, Shell, Total and Eni, made bumper profits from undercutting Nigeria on gas prices.

“The estimated cumulative of the deficit between value obtainable on the international market and what is currently being obtained from NLNG, over the 10 year period, amounts to approximately $29 billion,” the report said.

The report also alleges that NNPC had short-changed the Nigerian treasury of billions dollars over the last 10 years by selling crude oil and gas to itself below market rates.

The rollout of tougher sanctions against companies that fail to abide by transparency requirements comes weeks after the UK was accepted as a candidate country for the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

States which belong to that the Oslo-based initiative commit themselves to audited scrutiny of how they disperse funds gained from the licensing of oil and other extractive concessions to their citizens.

The EITI argues the tightening of transparency rules allows it to “name and shame” host countries that fail to use concession money to benefit their populations.

The Nigerian arm of EITI or Nigerian Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI) in its audit of the petroleum industry from 2009 – 2011 found that the (NNPC failed to remit  $4.84 billion dividend payments over a two year period from the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) to the Federation Account.

That was uncovered by comparing the monies reported to have been paid to its government and its agencies and the funds Nigeria reported receiving.

In November, commodities trader, Trafigura became the latest company to back the EITI initiative. Other supporting companies include BP, Royal Dutch Shell, BHP Billiton, ExxonMobil, Glencore and Chevron.

Nigeria is Africa’s largest crude oil exporter, shipping more than 2 million barrels per day (bpd), and is also home to the world’s ninth biggest gas reserves and one of the world’s largest LNG export terminals.

Politics › 2012: “GEJ Is A Joke, Nigerians Deserve A Better Leader" - Ghanaian Professor by shrek4(op): 5:43pm On Jan 02, 2015
One of the world’s foremost economists, Professor George Ayittey has lashed out at the President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ), describing him as “a joke” and a mediocre President after his (GEJ’s) encounter with the media last night.

According to Professor Ayittey, Nigeria “deserves a better leader”, judging by GEJ’s poor, almost unfortunate responses to some of the questions posed to him by the Nigerian media last night.
The Professor indicated that GEJ’s refusal to declare his assets and his failure to tackle the Boko Haram crisis suggest that he is of an unsound mind.

He therefore called on Nigerians to rid themselves of GEJ as soon as possible.
He said: “Nigerians should not put up with such mediocrity and should mount a RECALL GEJ campaign. They should check Chapter VI of their Constitution. See Sections 143 and 144 about removing the President and Vice-President from office other than through elections”.
“137; 1c: “A person shall not be qualified for election to the office of President if under the law in any part of Nigeria, he is adjudged to be a lunatic or otherwise declared to be of unsound mind.”

Professor Ayittey, a Ghanaian economist, author, president of the Free Africa Foundation in Washington DC, professor at American University, and an associate scholar at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, made this known on twitter this morning.
Read the entire tweet below:

Professor George Ayittey

“Look, this GEJ guy is a joke – a meretricious mediocrity. Nigerians deserve a better leader. Fancy his statements and responses to questions in a media chat on June 24, 2012:

• He has not visited Borno state, the center of Boko Haram attacks, because the airport there was not functional at the time he planned to visit. “And we did not want to land somewhere and fly in to Maiduguri with a helicopter for obvious reasons.”

[Why is the airport not functioning? Why hasn’t it been fixed? And are there no ROADS into Borno State?]

• Asked why he had not declared his assets, Mr. Jonathan replied in an impatient tone, stating “I don’t give a damn” about declaration of assets. He related that he had gone to the late President Umaru Yar’Adua to caution “that we should not play to the hands of some people [by openly declaring their assets].” Mr. Jonathan added, “That is a matter of principle and I am not going to declare. It is not the president declaring his asset that will end Boko Haram.”
• The president said it’s a matter of principle and whether he is criticised from “head to toe” he will not declare his assets. “It is not right,” he said. “I didn’t want even want to declare my assets as VP” but was forced by the then president, Umara Musa Yar’Adua. He said asset declaration is “not the right thing to do.”

[Damn it, it is a constitutional requirement to declare your assets, Mr. President. See Chapter VI, Part 1, Section 140 of Nigeria’s Constitution: “Declaration of assets and liabilities, oaths of President.” And what the hell has Boko Haram got to do with declaration of assets?]

• Agriculture: The president said his government is revolutionizing agriculture in Nigeria.”We are giving cotton seeds free in the North” he said.

[This is the most crass definition of an “agricultural revolution” – by providing free seeds.]

• The President said the government is doing very well in railway construction. “You may not know, but we are working,” he said. He added that his government has made a “significant progress” in railway construction. “You should commend us,” he adds.

[What “significant progress” has been made in railway construction? How many Nigerians are working on railway construction with the contract given to Chinese firms?]

• UNILAG name change: The president said what he did, in terms of law, was correct. You change the name first, then send the bill to the National Assembly later, he argues. “What we did, was the normal procedure,” he said.

[No, Mr. Presient, you had it backward. Before you change the name of University of Lagos (UNILAG), you consult with the university and the student body, which you did NOT do.]

• Crude Oil Theft: “The stealing of crude oil is a Nigerian phenomenon,” the president said. He adds that it has gone cancerous. “We will stop it, but it is like allowing a cancerous cell to grow into a major tumor.”

[Mr. President, theft of crude oil is a CRIME, not a “Nigerian phenomenon or a disease afflicting Nigerians. Describing it that way means you are CLUELESS about how to solve it.]

Nigerians should not put up with such mediocrity and should mount a RECALL GEJ campaign.
They should check Chapter VI of their Constitution. See Sections 143 and 144 about removing the President and Vice-President from office other than through elections.

137; 1c: “A person shall not be qualified for election to the office of President if under the law in any part of Nigeria, he is adjudged to be a lunatic or otherwise declared to be of unsound mind.” Link: http:///MSxUws ”

Professor Ayittey holds a B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Ghana, Legon, an M.A. from the University of Western Ontario in Canada, and a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba. He has taught at Wayne State College and Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.
He held a National Fellowship at the Hoover Institution in 1988-89, and then joined The Heritage Foundation as a Bradley Resident Scholar.

He founded The Free Africa Foundation in 1993, to serve as a catalyst for reform in Africa.
In 2008 Dr. Ayittey was listed by Foreign Policy as one of the “Top 100 Public Intellectuals” who “are shaping the tenor of our time”. He lives in Lorton, Virginia.
What do you make of his comments? Is Professor Ayittey justified in his criticism of GEJ?

Education › Re: .g sexzskil's life! by shrek4(m): 11:32pm On Sep 24, 2014
sexzskil: The way education is in this country, serves as one of the several reasons why development is one wild wild dream. Am a Unilorin student, from political science and am in 300L. My first semester in 100L was filled with Es and Ds to my shock. I answered all my exam, assignments and test questions so perfectly. I knew this because i do check textbooks to confirm how i approached the questions whenever am through. Honestly, that first semester was terrible and i was already afraid if i could cross. Second semester came and i trippled my effort, was studying for every tests and exams karakara, going for night classes, denying myself of sleep hours and all that. I had just finished my first two exam papers when a guy who was close to our level adviser told me how all the lecturers mark the answer scripts. I was baffled, flabbergasted and dumbfounded. He revealed that some of them would invite class reps over, give them scripts one after the other to count the number of pages the student reached and award the mark based on the multitude of the pages. For instance, supposing our answer leaflet is 30pages and a rep counts a certain student's answered pages to be 10, the lecturer would direct him/her to give him/her 18. If it is 20 pages, the lecturer might instruct, ''give him 25'', and so on. Like WTFhuh? I then realised i have been writing nothing more than 3 pages for one question all along, at least we are usually expected to answer 4 questions inside eight. Gbask! I set to quickly put things right before it was too late. I still had six more courses to write. I planned to start writing novels in exam hall, even putting irrelevant stuffs at anywhere i found myself since they never read anything we write. The first paper i wrote after discovering this was something else. I filled up 37 pages out of 38. I continued with this routine till i finished my papers. The only thing i always make sure i did was to write accurate things at the beginning and final pages of the leaflet. The department that their lecturers are fond of this scheme are those in History department. When the results were released i got six C, one D and one E. Guess what? The E and C were the ones i wrote before i met that guy!, and found out the reason for my past failures. Honestly that guy saved my a.ss, else i would not have crossed. This is the situation in some departments in Unilorin, the present acclaimed best university in Nigeria. Though i doff my hat for the school's innovation and pace setting in other various cases.

Seriously, education in this country never seems to leave the h.ole.
Madam, this post could get you an automatic expulsion!!!

I am a student of UNILORIN myself, and this write-up u have here, if they can trace it back to you - trust me, you will be lucky to get ordinary suspension. It might seems silly and stupid, but i honestly implore you to delete this, take it down however you can. Even if your claims are true, take it to the Dean of Student Affairs, not Seun's Nairaland.. This is an outright defamation of character (so they will accuse you).

If you have spent 3Yrs in UNILORIN, you should know how minute offences make students 'face tanke'.

This is just my own 3 kobo worth of Imoran - Trash it, Wash it, Use it or Criticize it... I have delivered my message.

May God bless us.

Cheers....

Hello!

My comment is subject to criticism, but keep it responsible and intellectual.

The major problem we face in this country is corruption. Yes, its an apparent fact! Even among the so called "masses", Yoruba call it 'Atenuje'. That exactly is what I see on this thread. Yeah! You have d freedom of association and expression, but what about your instincts?! Are you fighting for a cause that will bring curse from your offsprings' generations?!

Am not gonna incite any organisation, group or political party. Have been warned... Am an activist, when I say activist, I don't mean an e-noisemaker, am actively fighting for what I believe in!

The same government that made/makes life unbearable for 70% of its citizens?
The same government that sees fund embezzlement as ordinary 'theft'?

Isn't it time you stand and fight for what's right?!
What do you want to be remembered for??
Nigeria is on a crash course... Yet, you believe this same set of hogswarts should be re-instated? I question ur sanity.

Education doesn't prove enlightenment.

A whole lot of you should travel outside Nigeria, oh! Plz, experience civilization and spend time away from AIT and STV.

Our dear country is lagging behind.

We must revolt! We have to fight back, yes, we are ready to die for the right thing. My father failed to act, I won't let my own children live in dis situation. I am willing to lay my life for a better Nigeria.

We are the future of this country, make an impact and be remembered for who you are.

Stop living on crumbs from these tyrants.
You deserve more. Fight for it.
We are the majority, they are few, fight against them and we will win.

You want a change? Start with the man in the mirror.

That NIGERIA is possible!

God bless NIGERIA!
